‘An egg A Day to Survive’ campaign slims down malnourishment in Gingoog city
GINGOOG CITY – ‘An Egg to Survive’ campaign drastically slimmed down incidence of malnourishment in Gingoog city from 12.4% to 4.3% swinging rate.
Assistant city health officer and project anchor, Dr. Agnes Centino said that in 2008, the city malnourishment showed a record of 12.4% which challenged them to strategize a collective program coined as ‘An Egg A Day To Survive’ for 120 days wherein stakeholders were encouraged to contribute for the feeding project that eventually worked effectively as such record has reduced to 8%. According to Dr. Centino, Gingoog City Mayor Marie Guingona has been supportive to such laudable initiative which was participated by the city government employees, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and business sectors that were shelling egg themselves or providing funds for an egg daily collected by the nutrition section personnel of the City Health Office led by Dr. Grace Jadol. Further, Centino said the project has been added on with nutritional staple food instead of the traditional distribution of milk packs. The concerted rehabilitation for 120 days through day to day preparation of staple food was implemented in barangay level in cooperation with officials, nurses, midwives, nutrition scholars, health workers and concerned parents. “Our simple yet remarkable contribution of an egg has made the world of our few malnourished children round, healthier and happier. Our collective gesture of charity has transformed an identified deficiency into a healthy society,” the city exec
said. Working as nutrition action officer, nurse Elmer Risonar said, “Remaining malnourished after consuming the 120-day target will be adopted by the respective barangay council for additional supplementation through their barangay nutrition budget.” Mayor Marie has assured the parents involved that the local government unit (LGU) via city health office will regularly provide multivitamins and medical intervention to malnourished children aged 0-6 years old within 120 days onwards. “In sustaining for children’s health and wellness, this component city in Misamis Oriental has offered priority livelihood projects from offices of agriculture and veterinary to parents of remaining malnourished children. In preparing nutritious, delicious and affordable recipes to their children, parents have to undergo cooking sessions with coaching chefs managing the Aggies’ rural improvement club (RIC),” said the mayor. Guingona also said being recently elected as the vice president of Mindanao’s city mayors, “our brainchild’s program on ‘egg to survive’ coupled with provision of staple food along with multi-vitamin supplementation and medical intervention plus allocation of livelihood has constituted a winning impact in making our city into a consistent Green Banner awardee for the past three years. University officers paint preschool room, hold workshops in Bukidnon town CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Representatives from four interest pools of the Development Communication Society (DevComSoc) of Xavier University recently painted a preschool classroom and conducted various workshops in Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon. DevComSoc officers, led by designers pool head Chicco Libarnes, painted with bright colors the walls, windows, tables, and chairs in the lone classroom of Miarayon Community Preschool on July 29. “Kung hindi dahil sa kanila wala sana kaming ganito kaganda na classroom. Grabe ang pangungulit namin para mapinturahan itong classroom namin dito sa Miarayon Community Preschool,” said preschool teacher Nette Hanginan. (If it weren’t because of them, our classroom would not look as beautiful as this. We kept on pestering them so they would paint our classroom here at the Miarayon Community Preschool.) She also expressed her gratitude to the group for this initiative. “Siguro sila ‘yung hulog ng langit dito sa amin. Akala namin pintura
lang ang kanilang ibibigay, pero sila din pala ang magpipintura. Malaki ang pasasalamat namin sa DevCom Society,” she added. (Maybe they were heaven sent for us. We thought they would only give us paints, but as it turned out, they were also the ones who would be painting our classroom. We are extremely thankful to the DevCom Society.) Through Project Empowering Development Initiatives through Technology (EDIT), DevComSoc also held a workshop on basic journalism with DevCom graduate and writer Stephen Pedroza, attended by 20 St Therese School of Miarayon high school students on July 30. Pedroza encouraged the students to write more stories about their Lumad (indigenous people) community, culture, and farm products. “Miarayon
needs more storytellers so we need to equip young local writers on how to showcase the narratives of its people, challenges, and opportunities,” he said. Other workshops covered the fundamentals of photography with DevCom junior Kurt Chan, introduction to performance arts with XU Cultural Dance Troupe member Friah Pagaduan, and do-it-yourself shirt dyeing with designers pool member Ruth Esther Bermundo. The said four workshops formed part of Project EDIT, the flagship program of DevComSoc for the present school year. “In the Development Communication Society, we have four [interest] pools: designers, writers, performers, and documenters.
Project EDIT aims to make use of the talents and skills of the members in a meaningful way. We decided to implement the project in Miarayon because our hearts are really close to Miarayon,” said DevComSoc president Ryan Tulba. “We thank all the students, teachers, and the community here in Miarayon for inspiring us and for giving us the motivation to take time and effort as we implement the activities.” The Development Communication department of Xavier has also adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in its theme for this academic year, “Transforming our World through Communication for Development.” (XU Comm)
