Kahimunan 2016 opens

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) region 10 opens its annual regional trade fair dubbed ‘Kahimunan 2016’ in Cagayan de Oro City on 19 August 2016 and will run up to the 29th as part of the major activities for City Fiesta dubbed ‘Higalaay.’


DTI Assistant Secretary for Regional Operations Group Blesila A. Lantayona says Kahimunan showcases the abundance of Northern Mindanao featuring its five provinces. DTI’s mandate from President Rodrigo Duterte she said to help the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and ensure that there is no corruption. In fact, the new DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez is not new to the industry. Lantayona said the Secretary is affiliated with Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship, Go Negosyo, having a big heart for small business. Most of Kahimunan MSME exhibitors are recipient of Shared Service Facility (SSF) project of DTI. SSF aims for MSME’s better access to technology and equipment to achieve competitiveness. Successful SSF stories of region 10 include Misamis Oriental Multi Fiber Cluster as beneficiary of nine units heavy duty high speed sewing machine turned over to its members. Since then, production of quality Sinamay handbags have tripled and sales doubled resulting to more market options locally and abroad. Hineleban Coffee of Malaybalay in Bukidnon produces Robusta and Arabica coffee were provided with roaster, grinder and sealer. Also, winner for best SSF project nationwide was the coco sugar product of Linabu Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LAMPCO) in Balingasag Misamis Oriental. They were provided with

Pulveriser equipment to eliminate the problem of granules. Now, LAMPCO produces coco sugar with finest quality and has become pride of Northern Mindanao. Meanwhile, Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB) in Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute Technology (MSU –IIT) has just launched and is open to students, entrepreneur to help transform their ideas to designs to prototypes. This will help execute ideas and see them before going full blast in the market. Also, Northern Mindanao Food Innovation Center in Cagayan de Oro City located at Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a technology hub of research and development and support service to food industry in Northern Mindanao. Northern Mindanao according to Lantayona has maximized collaboration. Further, product development, need of trade fairs are strategies to ensure MSMEs have avenues to promote their products, face to face meetings with clients, learn current markets and opportunities and generate sales. She said they are also promoting e-commerce and to take advantage of millenials and ICT in promoting these products. Lastly, she said important for an entrepreneur is ease of doing business and Cagayan de Oro is one of pilot areas for ease of doing business. (JMOR/PIA10)


Public warned vs Chikungunya virus CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – City Council committee on health, sanitation and health insurance on August 15 said a mosquitoborne disease called Chikungunya virus is now affecting residents of Cagayan de Oro. In her special report during the regular session presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, Councilor Maria Lourdes Gaane, chair of the committee, said the disease shares clinical signs similar with dengue as the infected person will experience fever, rashes, nausea, vomiting, and a debilitating symptom of severe joint pain that will last for years. She said just like dengue, the disease can be transmitted from human to human by the bite of an infected female mosquito. The two species of mosquitoes which transmit the virus are Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus. These mosquitoes can be found biting throughout daylight hours, but the peak of its activity is in the early morning and late afternoon, councilor Gaane explained. Dr. Joey Retuya, epidemiologist of the City Health and Sanitation Clinic, said four to five cases of chikungunya have been recorded since January this year. According to Dr. Retuya, the disease was detected in Barangay Mambuaya, wherein 79 cases were positive. In the training center of police officers in Gusa, nine out of 44

cases were also found positive, he cited. DENGUE CASES Councilor Gaane said based on latest data, dengue cases in the city has already reached 1,017 with one reported case of death. She said the figure is expected to increase due to the onset of the La Niña phenomenon. 4S HABIT To prevent these mosquitoborne diseases, Gaane advises the public to follow the 4S habit: Search for breeding sites of mosquitoes; Selfprotective measures such as placing screen on the windows; Seek early consultation; and Say no to fogging in communities because of its harmful effects to health. Gaane announced that the City Health Office, in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH), has been distributing insecticide-treated mosquito nets to every elementary school in the city as one of the government’s preventive measures against dengue. Gingoog, DTI to boost SME anew GINGOOG CITY – With the advent of economic innovations of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the city government of Gingoog is spurring local economic potential by coaching small and medium entrepreneurs who venture to various start-up investments in the city. Valuing the success on ‘Go Negosyo,’ Gingoog city Mayor Marie Guingona is optimistic that her executive agendum on employment generation will be certainly boosted by DTI’s thrust ‘trabaho at negosyo’ which has been translated into various forums, trainings, seminars, technical assistance, supplemental funds and other forms of capability buildings that impacts to local business. In ensuring closer tie-up with DTI’s vision-mission to the local governments, Mayor Guingona has designated Epifanio Cuerdo Zarate as a focal link to DTI. “DTI’s supervision and coordination with our local price coordinating council assures our consumers on their rights and obligations in purchasing their daily basic commodities. Hence, I thank the men and women of DTI for recognizing our city as an active and supportive LGU partner in implementing its programs and projects relevant to trade, industry, economy and investments,” said the mayor. The city exec is very grateful upon learning, through Zarate, that DTI will conduct mentoring program to city’s business groups via its Small and Medium Enterprise Roving Academy (SMERA) in September this year.

“Initiatives like SMERA by the national government agencies (NGA’s) truly inspire and give hope to our local entrepreneurs who strive for more income and for comfortable living,” the mayor said. Further, mayor Marie has expressed her profound acknowledgments to DTI’s contributions through shared service facilities (SSF) that wind up business opportunities such as the coco-sugar production in Brgy. Agay-ayan which financially helps cooperative members, tuba gatherers (mananggiti) and other stakeholders. She has thanked the department for mentoring housewives in producing sweetened banana chips.
