CDO to host 3rd International River Summit
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Watershed management experts and practitioners are expected to visit Cagayan de Oro city in November for the third International River Summit (IRS), a global platform for exchange of knowledge and experience to develop resiliency of river basin ecosystems.
This year’s IRS will highlight cross cutting issues like best practices and lessons learned, river laws and policies, youth, women and community empowerment, among others. Learning tours are likewise organized for better appreciation among participants. Third IRS Summit Chair Dr. Hilly Ann Roa-Quiaoit said the event will highlight the role of the environment, rivers and watersheds in protecting the surrounding communities. Hosting it here in the city actually puts emphasis on the rivers in Northern Mindanao,” Quiaoit said, as she called on for support from various line agencies. The event was officially launched on August 26 in the city, back to back with the opening of the summit’s official website
www.3rdirscdo.com Raul T. Geollegue, one of the members of the local organizing committee, meanwhile said that, “The summit will help us review and assess the present plan for our own river basins, and guide us in the formulation of appropriate policies that would ensure the development of rural communities dependent upon the watersheds for their livelihood, for their agriculture, and most of all in the case of Cagayan de Oro city, for their safety.” He added that the summit is hoped to boost the local preparation in reducing the risk of another devastating flood as fatal and severe as the one experienced during the time of tropical storm Sendong in 2011.
