DA pushes brown rice use
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Highlighting to its nutritional benefits, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is pushing the use of brown or unpolished rice.
Audy Maagad, DA Supervising Agriculturist for Northern Mindanao stressed during the press conference held in Cagayan de Oro City on 30 August, the need for public to reconsider healthier alternatives to white rice. He said other than root crops, brown rice offers nutrient and fiberrich bran and germ, while white rice holds only the residual tasty white bit that makes up the bulk of a grain and
gives only pure carbohydrates. Brown rice is rich of B vitamins, selenium, manganese, fibers, antioxidants and good fats. Meanwhile, in support to this advocacy, DA recently launched the “brown for good” social media campaign, urging the public to participate by posting photos with hashtag #BROWN4good(your region) and tagging friends to do the same. PNP Malaybalay intensifies ‘OplanTokhang’ MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon – To curb the menacing effects of illegal drugs in the city, Malaybalay City Police Station (MCPS) has been on a grind in the “OplanTokhang (knock and plead)” campaign in Malaybalay city.
This, after President Rodrigo R. Duterte ordered the Philippine National Police (PNP) to launch the nationwide campaign dubbed “Oplan Tokhang,” in July 1. Malaybalay City Police Chief P/ Supt. Henry G. Dampal reported that since July 4, about 3,072 drug personalities voluntarily surrendered in ‘TokHang’s mass surrender conducted in the city’s 46 barangays. He said, of the total 3,072 who surrendered, 90 were self-confessed drug pushers and 2,982 were users. Latest data from MCPS also showed it has apprehended 15 drug personalities. After counselling and explaining to them the implementation of ‘Oplan Tokhang,’ they pledged to refrain from using illegal substance and promised not to engage in selling drugs again. Dampal emphasized that drug users’ and pushers’ submission to
authorities will not exempt them from future operations if they continue doing such illegal activities. “We have to support this nationwide cause as directed by the Commander-in-Chief,” P/Supt Dampal said. He then urged the communities’ continued support in combating this societal ill to prevent criminality, especially the youth, so that they will not fall prey on this vicious and destructive addiction that breaks human minds and spirit. The term ‘TokHang’ was coined from Bisayan dialect ‘toktok’ (knock) and ‘hangyo’ (plead), to convince alleged pushers, users, and couriers, among others, who have links in the illegal drug trade, in order to mend their ways before the full force of the law take them in.
