TESDA scholars graduate, ready for employment

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Center for Integrated Technologies (CIT) of Xavier University and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) conducted a culminating activity for the 7th batch of graduates under the TESDA Training for Work Scholarship (TWSP) earlier this month.

Both TESDA Misamis Oriental provincial director Leo V. Velez and XU-CIT director Dr. Gilda B. Brito gave inspirational messages to the new graduates who recently passed the TESDA Skills Assessment Program at the Cobsat Assessment Center in Bugo, Cagayan de Oro City. The graduates, who are now National Certificate II holders, wish to seek new opportunities as the global technical business industry now prefers skills-acquainted workers. With TESDA’s financial assistance coupled with the technical education and Jesuit formation provided by XU, the TESDA-TWSP scholars are confident they will land good-paying and professionally challenging jobs in the country and even abroad. This year, CIT has already trained

seven batches of TWSP scholars who also passed the assessment for a TESDA National Certificate II in Shielded Metal Arc Welding. The first six batches are now employed at the partner companies of XU-CIT, namely, Philippine Sinter Corporation, Makati Development Corporation, Metalite, and Hanjin, among others. Others are currently undergoing an advanced technical training at the Philippine Nippon Technical College bound for Japan. The said culminating event, organized by CIT resource center program coordinator Oliva E Lim, was held at the CIT - Jose Chavez Alvarez Technology Campus along Masterson Avenue, Upper Carmen, CDO. Anti-human trafficking body protects victims future, urges confidentiality CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – To ensure safety from future exploitation of human trafficking victims, the Regional InterAgency Committee Against Trafficking- Violence Against Women and Their Children (RIACAT-VAWC) in northern Mindanao urges the public not to disclose information that can be used to identify the victims of human trafficking. During the committee’s third Department of Justice-10 (DOJ) quarter meeting on September said that during rescue operations, 27, Lawyer Ruby Malanog of the involved personnel must take care of

the confidentiality of the case and the victim should always be accompanied by a social worker. Malanog also added that the presence of media is highly discouraged in such operation since they could not risk any leakage of information. The Department of Social Welfare and Development-10 (DSWD) further shared that with the speedy information dissemination through social media, it will be very difficult to ensure confidentiality of the case. Hence, they strongly oppose the posting of photos or statements that could lead to the discovery of the victim’s identity. Since human trafficking victims need autonomy and control over their body, private details of their lives, and

decisions that must be made relative to the crime in order to recover, the RIACAT-VAWC urges the public to refrain from highlighting human trafficking cases. Keeping confidentiality will also help the victim feel safe when reporting crimes to police, receiving medical attention or working with a service provider such as the DSWD, DOJ and several non-government organizations (NGOs). Aside from intensifying the advocacy on human trafficking, the Department of Education emphasized that the issues and concern on the subject matter has been recently integrated in the curriculum for high school students that will be channelled through social studies.(RTP/PIA10)

University concludes classes of rural dev’t master courses in DAP CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Xavier University (XU) instructors for the Master in Public Management major in Rural Development (MPM-RD) program by the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) weaved together course lessons during an integration session on September 14 at the DAP conference center in Tagaytay City. XU spearheaded the lessons on Asset Reform and Natural Resource Governance (AR NRG) and Agricultural Resource and Productivity Tools (ARPT) to the students, who are field

work and technical staff members of the Department of Agriculture, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Department of Agrarian Reform.

Offered by DAP in consortium with the University of the Philippines Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University - School of Government, and Xavier University - Southeast Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute (Searsolin), the master’s program employs a blended learning approach, combining faceto-face and online sessions for its classes. For the first time in the three batches of MPM-RD classes, the faceto-face sessions for AR NRG and ARPT were held at Searsolin from June 23 to July 3. The sessions also included a cultural community immersion and field trips to relevant sites in Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental. To conclude and harmonize the AR NRG and ARPT face-to-face and online classes, XU facilitated a

review of lessons for the students through lectures, readings, field work, and other course requirements. In his discussion, XU faculty-in-charge Roel Ravanera encouraged the MPMRD students to deepen their understanding in using relevant tools to enhance agricultural productivity in light of the goal of achieving sustainable and inclusive development amid the food security challenges in Asia and the rest of the world. Civil society expert Antonio Quizon from the University of the Philippines - Diliman, whom Xavier tapped as the resource speaker on asset reform and natural resource governance, provided a simple yet in-depth take on the “Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land.” He also tackled the state of fisheries and forests in the context of the National Food Security of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Committee on World Food Security. The MPM-RD graduation will be held next year. (Casandra Hilary B. Emata /XU)
