Exec-legis team up to spur progress, devt in CdeO

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The partnership between the executive and legislative departments in providing effective and efficient public service to the city’s constituents was strengthened with the holding of the Executive Legislative Agenda (ELA) drafting held recently.

Majority floor leader Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said there was an open mind discussion between the executive branch and the City Council headed by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy on development programs of the city for the next three years. During the Ang Konseho Program aired over a local radio station, councilor Nacaya, with Councilors Suzette Magtajas-Daba and Jay R. Pascual said the partnership between the executive and legislative departments was evident and encouraging. “Nakita nato ang teamwork nga gihimo nato karon (We have seen the teamwork we are doing),” said Nacaya, citing that even before the

activity, the minority bloc has been supportive of the direction of the city government towards development. The City Council is not focused on politics but on ways to introduce changes and development in Cagayan de Oro, Nacaya added. He said legislators are committed to enact legislations that will make people’s lives better. Nacaya also said this will be their legacy to the people of the city. The councilor congratulated Mayor Oscar Moreno and Vice Mayor Uy for efforts to usher the city to progress and development through the drafting of the city’s three-year development plan. (SP)

City intensifies drive vs dengue CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – To lessen the increasing number of dengue cases in Cagayan de Oro City, the city council urged the City Health Office in coordination with the barangays to strengthen its campaign against dengue. This, after the Committee on Health, Sanitation and Health Insurance convened together with Dr. Fe Bongcas and Ramon Bautista both from City Health Office and Dr. William Bernardo of City Health Insurance Office to discuss the existing antidengue task force of the City Health Office. Councilor Maria Lourdes Gaane,

chair of the committee, brought the matter to the body after she received reports of the increasing number of dengue cases in the city. Dr. Bongcas confirmed that dengue cases in the city are increasing compared to last year. Based on the statistics, as of September 2016, there are about 1,455 dengue cases reported. Out of

that, there are four reported deaths because of dengue, she said. Bongcas said there are innovations done by the CHO such as orientation in the different schools both private and public on dengue awareness, aside from posting stickers on PUJs which serves as an information drive. She said “olyset” nets were also given by the Department of Health (DOH) to 15 barangays with the highest number of dengue cases. BARANGAY DENGUE BRIGADE During the meeting, Dr. Bongcas said there is a task force of each barangay in coordination with the City Health Office called Barangay Dengue

Brigade. This task force is composed of barangay chair as chairman of the task force, with the City Health Office, barangay health workers, purok leaders and the academe and NGOs as members. Every Saturday and Sunday, personnel from the CHO-Sanitation Division visit the area to give orientation and lead in the conduct of regular clean-up drive. Councilor Gaane encouraged the barangays to strengthen the implementation of the dengue brigade. (JBD/SP)

Northern Mindanao agri production declines in Q2 due to El Niño CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The dry spell brought about by the recently ended El Niño phenomenon caused the agricultural production in Northern Mindanao to decline in the second quarter of the year, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) reported. For palay production alone, output fell by 19.7 percent to only 99,644 metric tons (MT) from 124,068 MT in the same quarter in 2015. Decreases in production were noted in four out of the five provinces in the region due to inadequate irrigation water and rainfall.

Engr. Cecilio Clarete, chief economic development specialist of NEDA-X, said some rainfed areas were also damaged during the vegetative stage and no plantings were made in upland areas due to dry spell. Corn production, which is highly dependent on rainfall, also declined

by 50 percent from 42,746 MT to only 21,220 MT. Except for Misamis Occidental, the rest of the provinces posted reductions in outputs for both white and yellow corn varieties. The decrease in output in Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte was due to lesser area planted and lesser usage of fertilizer while insufficient rainfall in some parts of Misamis Oriental as well as shifting of corn areas into pineapple and cassava further contributed to the decline production in the province. Clarete said lesser production could also be attributed to more white corn from other areas of Mindanao which came into the region. Similar trend was also posted in coconut production as both outputs for matured coconut and green nut slid by six percent and nine percent, respectively. Production of major crops

recorded a negative growth of 17 percent. All crops subsector, except fruit crops, reported declines during the second quarter of the year. The reduction was mostly noticed in industrial crops which posted an average decrease of 58 percent. Production of sugarcane which accounts for about 91 percent of the total industrial crops went down by 60 percent. Vegetables production was likewise down by nine percent while rootcrops fell by about five percent. The modest growths in banana and pineapple production at 1.27 percent and 3.97 percent, respectively, also failed to offset the production downturn during the quarter. Both banana and pineapple are considered as the major contributors of fruit crops in the region. (APB/PIA-10)
