Council for children stresses need for psychologists on discernment CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Regional Council for the Welfare of Children (RCWC) in northern Mindanao urges the local government units (LGUs) and even the national government to create a regular position for psychologists who play a vital role in handling children in conflict with the law (CICL). Based on Republic Act 9344 or the Act on Juvenile Justice and Welfare System, a child above 15 years but below 18 years of age shall be exempt from criminal liability and be subjected to an intervention program, unless he or she has acted with discernment, in which case, such child shall be subjected to the appropriate proceedings in accordance with this Act. Prosecutor Ruby Malanog of the Department of Justice-10 (DOJ) said that during discernment, there is a need for competent child psychologists and psychiatrists, working hand in hand with the law enforcement and
justice systems. Discernment means the mental capacity to understand the difference between right and wrong and its consequences. Unfortunately, Malanog said that the best interest of the child particularly in northern Mindanao is not fully realized since there is no government service, particularly through designating a psychologist, is made available. With this, the council is set to lobby or request for a Plantilla position for a psychologist in the LGU to make sure that the CICLs will be handled appropriately.(RTP/PIA10)
CED to conduct workshop on STEM Education for teachers ILIGAN CITY – The College of Education (CED) of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) has been given authority to hold a workshop for in-service Department of Education teachers (DepEd-10) at the college’s amphitheater on October 11-13, 2016.
The three-day workshop is for free, and will see CED faculty leading discussions and conduct activities regarding interdisciplinary contextualization for STEM education. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. STEM education is a program that centers on the teaching of the four subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math) in an interdisciplinary and practical
method. Its main idea is to teach the four in an integrated manner instead of as individually separate and distinct disciplines. The resource persons for the workshop are CED faculty members Charity Mulig Cruz, Jun Karren Caparoso, Odyssa Natividad Molo, and Everlita Canalita.
