Dry spell causes more agri workers to lose jobs

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – About 149,000 agricultural workers in northern Mindanao lost jobs due to the El Niño phenomenon in the country, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in the region said.


As of April 2016, employed agricultural workers in the region accounted only 642,000, down by 18.83 percent from the 791,000 workers registered during the same month in 2015, said Engr. Cecilio Y. Clarete, chief economic development specialist of NEDA-X. The decline in the employed persons in the agriculture industry contributed to the 0.88 percent reduction in the total employment despite the increases of 8.30 percent in the Services and 0.88 percent in

the Manufacturing industries. Electricity, Gas and Water supply; Construction; Trade; Education; and Administrative and Support Services were among the subsectors that posted increases during the period. Meanwhile, the employment rate in the region increased to 94.6 percent during the second quarter of 2016 from 94.3 percent in the same quarter in 2015. Underemployment, on the other hand, increased to 28.8 percent from 25.5 percent during the same reference period. (APB/PIA-10)

Lanao del Sur town launches MASA MASID MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur – In support to President Rodrigo Duterte’s war against illegal drugs, the municipality of Bubong in the province launched the MASA MASID program with a walk for peace on October 5. Led by Municipal Mayor Alfais Munder, the 36 barangay chairmen of Bubong, municipal employees and police went around the streets of the municipality bearing anti-narcotics placards. Municipal Local Government Operation Officer Agakhan M. Rinandang said MASA MASID program is a community-based program for the prevention of criminality, corruption, illegal drugs in the villages. “Bubong is the first municipality in Lanao del Sur to launch the program. As the DILG Officer of Bubong, I am

very happy that all local officials support this program,” Rinandang said. MASA MASID is envisioned to unite different organizations in creating safer and drug-free communities. It encourages the involvement of local stakeholders to take a proactive stance in the fight against illegal drugs, criminality and corruption. Under DILG Memorandum Circular 2016-116, the program has four main thrusts: information and education campaign in communities for government programs against


corruption, illegal drugs and criminality; creation of a reporting mechanism on illegal drugs-related activities; formulation of community-based rehabilitation programs; and revive

the spirit of volunteerism by creating a volunteer-friendly atmosphere for organizations that wishes to be partners for change. (SAMD/PIA-10)

MisOr pushes P1.9B budget for 2017 CAPITOL COMPOUND, Misamis Oriental – To better serve their constituents and improve their services, the provincial government of Misamis Orienal is submitting to the Provincial Board a P1.9 billion budget proposal for 2017.
