MAMBAJAO, Camiguin – To continually champion consumer welfare promotion and development, the Department of and Trade and Industry (DTI), Camiguin Provincial Office will be spearheading again this year’s observance of the annual Consumer Welfare Month in the whole month of October.

October is known as Consumer Welfare Month through Presidential Decree 1098 and this year’s event carries the theme: “Consumer Protection: A Shared Responsibility” with the host and sponsoring agency – BangkoSentral ng Pilipinas. This year’s theme also advocates for the consumer protection as a shared responsibility among local government units (LGUs), national agencies, private sectors and financial institutions, among others The consumer month celebration is vital to the consumers’ welfare to create awareness of the eight basic consumer rights which are the right to basic needs, right to safety, right to information, right to choose, right to representation, right to redress, right

to consumer education and the right to a healthy environment. The DTI also aims at developing awareness on consumer rights and responsibilities, consumer welfare desks, the process in the resolution of consumer complaints, the Consumer Act of the Philippines, the prohibition of the “no return no exchange policy” among establishments, advocacy on receipts, the right of a redress if product is defective, among others. DTI stresses that consumer protection and education should not be limited to a month, but rather it is a lasting commitment that demands continuing year-round concern and action.
