Council for children underscores right to education

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – With the theme, “Isulong: Kalidad na Edukasyon Para sa Lahat ng Bata,” the Regional Council for the Welfare of Children (RCWC) kicks off the 24th National Children’s Month celebration with a motorcade, turnover of pencils for the One Million Lapis project and medical mission on November 7 at Kiosko Kagawasan, Cagayan de Oro City.

To help children focus on their studies and maximize the efforts of the government to ensure quality education, Cagayan de Oro City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) Officer Teddy Sabuga-a says that it is important to take care of the children’s health. Hence, he urges mothers to provide the best nutrition to their children especially in their first two growing years stressing that the inability to nurture the child in such time of their life would result to fragile growth. Since this stage is irreversible,

Sabuga-a said that mothers should be breastfeeding their infants from 0-2 years. For her part, Department of Social Welfare and Development-10 (DSWD) Assistant Regional Director for Operations Aldersey M. Dela Cruz says that education starts at home with the family and it is just continued in schools. Thus, the value of education must be cultivated in homes to sharpen the children’s potential and talent that will further aid in their physical, social, psychological and emotional development.

About 51,000 pencils were also turned over by the RCWC to the Department of Education (DepEd) during the celebration as part of the One Million Lapis campaign that aims to promote the child’s right to (write as basic right) education especially for children whose situations have impeded their chances to go to

school. The National Children’s Month is slated in the month of November every year as emphasized in Republic Act 10661 to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Children by the United Nations General Assembly.(RTP/PIA10)

200 indigent PWDs, senior citizens in Lanao del Sur receive free wheelchairs MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur – Some 200 persons with disability (PWDs) and senior citizens in the province of Lanao del Sur were given free wheelchairs on November 3, 2016. The distribution, led by Lanao del Sur First District Representative Ansaruddin Adiong and Provincial Governor Soraya Adiong, was held at the Provincial Capitol Compound, Marawi city. Salma Jayne Tamano, provincial information officer, said additional 400 wheelchairs are set to be distributed by Cong. Adiong and Gov. Adiong in far-flung municipalities and district hospitals in the province in the coming weeks. The beneficiaries are initially recommended by the municipal mayors and have undergone assessment by

the Provincial Health Office. She said the mobility assistance was requested by the congressman from the Department of Health Central Office. Despite its being a separate legislative district, Tamano said Rep. Adiong has also allocated wheelchairs to PWDs and senior citizens from the second district of the province who are needing mobility assistance. (APB/ PIA-10)

MinDa calls on stakeholders support to IRS CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Highlighting the gains that the 3rd International River Summit (IRS) will bring to the rehabilitation and protection of our country’s major river basins, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDa) called on key stakeholders to be part of the initiative set on 24-26 November 2016 at the Pryce Plaza Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. Interested participants are advised to pre-register online at www.3rdirscdo.com. Lourdes Enjambre of MinDa said the summit is a venue to share best practices on the implementation of programs and projects, not just here in the country but across the globe. Various ambassadors and international agency partners have already committed to speak in the plenary sessions to include Russia, Netherlands, Bangladesh, United Kingdom, and Australia, among others. Enjambre said this is a good learning experience for the local chief executives, environmental officers and planning officers as they also gather support from the non-government organizations (NGOs) and academe. A mini-exhibit of the eight major river basins in Mindanao, to include the Mandulog River Basin will be among the highlights of the IRS summit which aims to showcase notable river management initiatives to some 1000 expected delegates. The event is co-hosted by the

local government of Cagayan de Oro City, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council, and the League of Cities of the Philippines. MinDa, for its part, performs an oversight function in all Mindanao river basins, attuned to its “Mindanao Nurturing Our Waters Program.” In an interview with Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Enjambre also reported that all river basins in Mindanao have already crafted their respective master plan, while it’s only in Butuan City that’s pending for approval by the Regional Development Council (RDC) but is targeted to be passed within the year. She said that while they are eyeing to institutionalize the budget that will support to the priority programs and projects identified in the protection and preservation of the watersheds, they are at the same time hopeful for the creation of an executive order to bridge the gap.
