SP commends, RTA, COCPO, CDRRMO, media, for peaceful, orderly observance of Nov 1, 2 CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – THE 18th City Council during its 17th regular session passed Resolution No. 12487, commending the Roads and Traffic Administration, Cagayan de Oro City Police Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC), barangay tanods of different barangays, Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, civic spirited citizens and organizations, and all media outlets for a peaceful and orderly observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day in cemeteries in Cagayan de Oro City. This after Councilor Teodulfo E. Day in cemeteries. Lao, Jr., the proponent, gave a special “This day is not only spent report on the peaceful and orderly honoring and remembering our observance of All Souls’ and All Saints’ departed loved ones but was also for
reunions among families, relatives and friends and a moment for bonding specially for those who have been away for quite some time. As Filipinos, this has become part of our culture and tradition over the years,” he cited. Councilor Lao said he visited public and private cemeteries and found that everything was wellprepared and organized. The flow of traffic was smooth and orderly, security guards were stationed in different corners of the cemetery compound, he added. Lao commended the RTA for instituting efforts in directing the influx of traffic. He also commended the barangay tanods of Bulua, Camamanan, Tablon, Agusan and Bugo for their relentless support in the maintenance of peace and order in their respective areas of responsibility. He hailed the CDRRMO for the comprehensive and quick response especially during emergency calls and for being accessible all the time whenever a request for assistance are called for and the COCPO headed by City Director Ronnie Francis Cariaga for doing continuous search and inspection necessary for the attainment of security and safety of all ongoers and visitors thus untoward and terroristic incidents have been avoided. Councilor Lao gave credit to the media for giving situational updates from time to time, the KARANCHO for assisting the flow of traffic at Bulua Highway, the ORO-Filipino Chinese
Chamber for their fire brigade volunteers and all civic-spirited citizens and organizations who, in one way or another, contributed to the over-all harmonious and peaceful celebration. CONGESTED CEMETERY Councilor Lao said he observed that the City Memorial Cemetery at Bolonsori, Camaman-an is already congested. “You can hardly move from one place to another seemingly because it is overly populated with buried dead bodies,” he added. According to the councilor, this has made the area constricted and narrow and no longer suitable to the highly-urbanized city like Cagayan de Oro. As per record from CPSO, there are already approximately 200 thousand buried in Bolonsori Cemetery that’s why some people are already complaining of hardship in finding the grave of their loved ones because it was already buried by another grave. Some even bury their dead at the hillside which is vulnerable to landslides, Lao reported. He said that the right time has come to discuss the establishment of a new cemetery, where a vertical or condominium type of grave will be designed to avoid congestion in the future. “With this design, another dead body can be buried again after five years in the same tomb. A locator map will also be made and used so as to avoid difficulty in finding the grave
of a dear departed, he added. To avoid over population, he further suggested that both districts of the city should have one cemetery each for their constituents. He concluded his report by
enjoining the members of the City Council to work for the realization of this undertaking this coming 2017. (JAO/SP)
Graphic health warnings on cigarette products now in full swing CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – To effectively warn the public of the hazards of cigarette smoking and exposure to second hand smoke, the Graphic Health Warnings Law is now fully implemented nationwide. Health Education Promotion Officer Aian Caridad of the Department of Health (DOH)- Northern Mindanao told a group of media practitioners in a meeting held on Friday at Pearlmont Hotel here that the full implementation of Republic Act 10643, otherwise known as the Graphics Health Warnings Law started on Nov. 4, 2016. Caridad explained that the said law aims not only to warn the public of the devastating effects of tobacco use but also to remove misleading descriptors, which tend to convey that a certain tobacco product is healthier, less harmful or safer. With this law, all tobacco product packets and packages must bear photos accurately depicting the hazards of tobacco use with textual
warning related to the pictures. Common illnesses that result from smoking are lung cancer, stroke, asthma, premature, low birth-weight babies, diabetes, blindness and many others. Caridad emphasized that the local government units (LGUs) play a very important role in the full implementation of the Graphic Health Warnings Law. (FPG/PIA10)
