Modern nanays step up campaign on breastfeeding
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Aimed to teach mothers and pregnant women on establishing good milk supply, breastfeeding positions and getting babies to latch on, the Modern Nanays of Mindanao (MNM) conducts a breastfeeding class and breast milk drive through the Nanay Meet Up on November 14.
Mothers are urged to frequently breastfeed their babies especially during growth spurts in order to establish milk supply. Babies should also be properly latched and positioned to maximize the benefits of breastfeeding both by the baby and the mother. Nadine Casiño, founder of the MNM, also discourages the use of pacifiers and bottles. “Breastfeeding is our primal instinct to nourish our baby. There is no best way to feed our baby than breast milk itself straight from the source,” Casiño added. For mothers who find it hard to breastfeed their child directly from the source, the MNM also provided a lecture on proper human milk storage as well as the proper technique of pumping human milk. More than 30 mothers participated in the said event and were taught on handling and providing their baby’s needs.
“I join meet ups of MNM para makatabang sa uban nga mga nanay nga naa’y problema sa ilang pagpatotoy. Para ma-share pud nako sa uban ang akong nahibal-an about breastfeeding (I join meet ups of MNM so I can help other mothers who have problems on breastfeeding. The event also allows me to share my knowledge on breastfeeding),” said Sharon Orias, a participant of the meet up. Orias practices tandem feeding -breastfeeding a toddler and an infant at the same time, and believes that every mother should know and experience the benefits of breastfeeding. MNM is a group of mothers who advocate breastfeeding, babywearing and cloth-diapering, and aims to make no mom feel alone. It is a budding group of over a thousand members comprising of stay-at-home and working moms, pediatricians, obstetricians, advocates and families believing in the importance of the said three principles.(RTP/PIA10)

Increase in assistance to calamity victims under study CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The proposed ordinance increasing the rates of financial assistance to victims of calamities, amending for the purpose Ordinance No. 7783-2001 was taken up last week by the Committee on finance, budget and appropriations of Cagayan de Oro city. A justification was furnished by the City Social Welfare and Development Department (CSWD) last August 16, 2106 along with the recommended new rates of financial assistance to victims of calamities (natural and human made). According to the CSWD, after fifteen years, the old rate is no longer sufficient to meet and buy the needed housing materials of the victims considering the increase in price of materials. Furthermore, fatalities, injuries, burns are also considered results of calamity and these require medical expenses which, has become too expensive, the CSWD cited. In line with these observations, an estimated 60-percent increase from the old rate is proposed so as to meet the present need of the victims. For instance, the financial assistance for the victim (house owner/ dweller) with an extent of damage ranging from P300,001 to P500,000 is pegged at P20,000 if totally damaged and P18,000 if partially damaged as compared to the rate 15 years ago which was at P9,000 and P8,000
respectively. However, given the estimated medical expenses in the amount ranging from P25,000 and above, the expected amount of assistance that will be given to victims of 2nd degree burns will be P20,000, as compared to the old rate of P5,000 only. After finding these proposals fitting and justifiable and duly recommended by the committee on social services under Councilor Reuben R. Daba, Councilor Edna Dahino endorsed the proposed ordinance to the committee on laws and rules headed by Councilor Ian Mark Q. Nacaya for appropriate action. (JAO/ SP)
