ARMM holds five-day food festival
MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur – The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) is holding a five-day food festival this week to showcase the different Moro delicacies as part of the region’s 27th founding anniversary celebration in Marawi city.
The food festival opened Monday with foods and delicacies unique to the province of Maguindanao taking center stage. The array of authentic Maguindanaon delicacies included the baling, tinapayan, palapa, pastil, fried katipa, tapudi, lininggil, inasekan a layagan, blua, kumukunsi, tinadtag, and panganansising. Two of the most prominent Maguindanaon delicacies are the pastil and sininang kambing. Pastil is cooked rice topped with sauteed chicken or fish meat flakes, known as ‘kagikit’, that is wrapped in banana leaves. A modern take on this unique Maguindanaon dish features toasted fish meat, chicken or beef as kagikit, and hot and spicy flavored kagikit. The sininang kambing, on the other hand, is tenderized goat meat cut into chunks cooked with with palapa, coconut milk, spices, garlic, onion, ginger, chives, chili and soy sauce. The spices and coconut milk bring a unique and contrasting flavor to the meat. According to ARMM Tourism Sec. Ayesha Mangudadatu-Dilangalen, these foods are usually served during thanksgivings that Maguindanaon refer to as “kanduli.” “It reflects their culture and traditions,” she said. The food festival was made even more cheerful with live kulintang music from a traditional Maguindanaon ensemble, and with the Sagayan, a traditional dance in Maguindanao.
Sec. Dilangalen said the delicacies unique to the different provinces of the ARMM form part of the culture of peoples therein and holding a festival to showcase these foods spice up the celebration of the founding anniversary of the region. The ARMM is composed of five provinces namely, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and TawiTawi. The delicacies in the four other provinces will be featured in the following schedule this week: Lanao del Sur on November 15; Basilan on November 16; Sulu on November 17; and Tawi-Tawi on November 18. Sec. Dilangalen said the 27th Pakaradjaan sa ARMM will highlight the rich culture of the Moro people as well as the variety of local products from the region’s different provinces. “It’s a great opportunity for the tourists to discover the rich culture of the region,” Sec. Dilangalen said. Since 2014, the ARMM has held Food Festivals to showcase an astounding range of foods distinct to each province. The food festival marks the celebration of the region’s diverse flavors reflecting its culture, and a celebration of cuisine and culinary talents of the Moro people. (BPI/PIA10)
Improved road to bring more tourists in Misamis Occidental MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL – The tourism industry in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental is seen to get a boost with the newly paved road leading to its scenic Hoyoyoy Highland Botanical Garden. Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 10 Director Evelyn T. Barroso said a total of P53.4 million was spent for the concreting with grouted riprap lined canal of Sta. Maria Hoyohoy Road. The improved Sta. Maria Hoyohoy Road will allow tourists to have an easier and smoother trip to Hoyohoy Highland Botanical Garden where the large collection of plants for scientific studies, the breathtaking view of Panguil Bay and the vast resources of Mt. Malindang Ranges Natural Park can be seen. Aside from facilitating access to scenic and natural attractions, the completed project will address traffic congestion caused by the influx of tourists during Christmas season. Tangub City, tagged as the Christmas Symbols Capital of the Philippines and the little Baguio of Misamis Occidental, is frequently visited by tourists during Yuletide season, for its recreation of famous landmarks in the world using colorful lights and glowing decorations. Misamis Occidental Province, part of Mindanao. Tangub City is composed of 55 barangays spread over a land area of 16,572 hectares. The topography is approximately 40 percent plain along the coast of Panguil Bay and 6 percent rolling and hilly, gradually rising to the Mt. Malindang National Forest Reservation area. The city does not have high rise buildings and traffic congestion. Primary industry is agriculture. More than 60 percent of the land is devoted to farming. Their main products are coconut, corn and banana. Fishing is another source of livelihood of the people. Other occupations include professional practice, handicraft, blue collar jobs, private business and employment. COMELEC resumes voters’ registration for 2017 barangay, SK elections CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Commission on Elections (COMELEC) resumed voters’ registration on 07 November 2016 for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections next year. Based on Comelec Resolution No. 10166 promulgated on October 25, 2016, the Comelec will conduct the registration period from November 7, 2016 to April 29, 2017 including Saturdays and Holidays except on December 24 and 25, 2016 and April 13 and 14, 2017. Kenneth P. Piloton, council member of the NAPC Youth and Students Sectoral Council and chairperson of the Youth Participation Committee encourages all the qualified youth and those who were not able to beat the deadline of the last voter’s registration to grab this opportunity to register before the elections next year. “Applicants should not wait for the deadline of the registration for them not to experience long lines and other inconveniences,” he said. So far, almost all COMELEC offices have almost zero applicants for registration from November 7 until today November 12, 2016 for ages 15-30 years old,” Piloton added. According to the estimate of the COMELEC, there will be over one million more voters for the 2017
Barangay and SK elections than the 2016 presidential elections. Around 54 million voters registered for the May 2016 National and Local elections. Meanwhile, total of 3,095,187 registered for the Barangay and SK elections. The law on the postponement of the 2016 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections was approved by President Duterte on October 15, 2016. (NAPC)
