Siquijor PSTC announces new projects for 2018
SIQUIJOR, Jan. 11 (PIA) – The Siquijor Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC), the provincial arm of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in the province, reinforces its 2018 target with upcoming new projects. “Every year, DOST Siquijor receives request from interested micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) asking for technology assistance in terms of technology upgrading, technology needs assessment, provision of appropriate product packaging and labeling, and laboratory analysis, among others,” said Siquijor PSTC Director Engr. Mario de la Pena in a press release. He added that next year, the agency aims to reach out to more qualified MSMEs to avail of the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP). In his release, DOST-Siquijor Information Officer and Sciernce Research Analyst, Engr. ReinholdJek Abing, reported that as of October 2017, DOST Siquijor has assisted eight MSMEs and turned over a total of P3.9 million. In 2018, the agency aims to meet or surpass that target, he said. He also reported that the Science Education Institute (SEI) of DOST, the education arm of the agency, accepts yearly application for its Undergraduate Scholarships - RA 7687 and Merit - and Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS). DOST Siquijor aims to have at least two passers per municipality or a total of 12 passers provincewide, he said. Another program is the DOST consultancy as one of the agency’s holistic approach to assisting MSMEs. DTI-Siquijor awards Bagwis Bronze Level to Prince Hypermart-Larena SIQUIJOR, Jan 10 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Siquijor Provincial Office awarded the first BAGWIS Bronze Award in the province to Prince Hypermart-Larena during its first year anniversary celebration at the Queen Gate Larena, Siquijor. Known as the “Bagwis Seal of Excellence”, the certification is part of DTI’s program which is recognized by the ASEAN Committee on Consumer Protection (ACCP) as one of the best practices of the country in consumer protection. The Bagwis Program gives due recognition to establishments that practice fair business and uphold the rights and welfare of consumers. Also, the seal of excellence guides
consumers and assures them on purchasing safe and quality products and service and in getting the best value for their money. Formerly known as the DTI-Certified establishment, the Bagwis seal is further classified into Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Various parameters are measured so that establishments from supermarkets, department stores, appliance stores, and hardware stores could qualify for the seal. For the bronze seal, establishments must comply with Fair Trade Laws (FTLs) like the Consumer Act, Price Act, Price Tag and install the Consumer Welfare Desks. The silver seal, on the other hand, involves additional criteria to meet such as compliance with social responsibilities
that include sound purchasing policy and good working relationship with the government by participating in the national or local government programs such as price stabilization and livelihood programs. For the gold seal, establishments must meet the additional requirement of ISO 9001/Quality Management System (QMS) compliance. In screening nominees, the DTI partnered with the private sectors that include the Consumer Organization and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI).
