PNP aims for a drug-free Siquijor SIQUIJOR(PIA) - - The Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) here is intensifying efforts to eradicate illegal drugs in the province. SPPO Provincial Director Police Senior Superintendent Clarito Baja affirmed this during the Inter-Agency Coordinating Conference on Anti-Illegal Drugs Campaign Operations held at GAD Building in Siquijor, Siquijor. Baja underscored stronger coordination with various stakeholders to make the campaign successful, citing that the problem of illegal drugs is not only the problem of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) or the PNP but of the whole community. The operation, said Baja, is based on the President’s directive to for the PNP to resume giving active support to the PDEA, which is the lead agency in the conduct of Anti-Illegal Drugs Operations. “We need everybody’s support. We need both the private and the government’s concerted effort,” he said as he directed the local chiefs of police (COPs) to work harder to eradicate problems of illegal drugs in all affected barangays within their areas of responsibility (AORs). Deputy Provincial Director for Operations (DPDO) and Information Officer Police Superintendent Enrique Belcina said in the SPPO’s accomplishment report that 105 out of 134 barangays in the province are affected with drugs while only 29 are unaffected. Out of the 105 affected, 94 are slightly and 11 are moderately affected. He explained that barangays are considered slightly affected if two percent of its total population are affected, and considered moderate if affected individuals are more than two percent of

Belcina also reported that the SPPO’s intensified campaign on illegal drugs last year resulted to the arrest of some 47 drug personalities with total value of drugs confiscated reaching to P86,864.24 from the 2.15 grams of shabu and 101.92 grams of marijuana. The SPPO’s Oplan Tokhang has a total of 946 surrenderers composed of 805 users and 141 pushers provincewide, he said. Out of the surrenders, Siquijor town has 148; Larena, 284; Enrique Villanueva, 39; Maria 159; Lazi, 184; and

San Juan town, 132. This, and all the PNP illegal drugs campaign are intelligence-driven, Belcina said. He also said that their office is continuously conducting information campaign in all schools and barangays provincewide. The SPPO thanked all the PNP officers, the Provincial, Municipal and Barangay Anti-Drug Councils (P/M/ BADAC), and line government agencies, as well as the private sectors for their cooperation and support. iSIQUIJOR GOVERNMENTNEWS DOLE’s ‘social partners’ join labor inspections of CV establishments (PIA) -- Representatives of the employees and employers considered as the social partners of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) joined the labor inspectors in conducting inspection among establishments in Central Visayas. For 2018, more than 4,000 establishments in the region are expected to undergo inspection. According to DOLE-7 Regional Labor Communication Officer Luchel Senarlo-Taniza, it was confirmed by DOLE-7 OIC-Regional Director Cyril Ticao in a meeting the participation and engagement of the department’s social partners in conducting routine inspection starting last week. Routine inspection as defined under Department Order No. 183, series of 2017, refers to the process of evaluating compliance with labor laws and social legislation jointly undertaken by the labor inspector and the representatives of the employer and the employees using the prescribed inspection checklist. Administrative Order No. 36, series of 2018 stipulates the authority of the DOLE social partners, who summed up to a total of 126 representatives covering all the regions in the country, said Ticao . For Region 7 alone, there are 17 social partners issued with General Authority, of which, 15 are from the labor sector and two from the management. The inspection will be a joint undertaking by the labor inspectors and DOLE’s social partners, Director Ticao said, adding that DOLE is optimistic that with their participation, sound labor-management relations would prevail in Central Visayas.

More science, technology to Siquijor; MSMEs, healthcare, education to get boost The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Siquijor province pushes to increase its technical assistance to the Island’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME). Siquijor Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) director, Engr. Mario de la Pena said MSMEs need technical assistance in terms of technology upgrading, needs assessment, appropriate product packaging and labelling, laboratory analysis and the like. SETUP De la Pena added that this year, DOST-Siquijor and PSTC aims to reach out to more qualified MSMEs to avail of its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP). DOST’s SETUP program is aimed at empowering MSMEs to improve productivity and efficiency by adopting technological innovations to improve products, services and business operations. According to DOST-Siquijor information officer Engr. Reinhold Abing, as of October 2017, the agency had assisted eight MSMEs at a cost of over P3.9 million. This year, DOST wants to surpass that amount. Scholarships Abing added that one of the major programs of DOST is its Science Education Institute (SEI) which accepts yearly applications for undergraduate scholarships. He said this year, DOST-Siquijor aims to have at least two passers per town or 12 scholars for the province. Mango farming Another major focus of DOSTSiquijor is mango farming, which has been its priority sector for the tech consultancy for agricultural productivity. Integrated farming is gaining popularity in the province because of the growing demand of resorts and restaurant owners for locally grown vegetables, fruits and other produce, Abing said. DOST-Siquijor continues to assist SETUP clients and other tech-consultancy programs including energy audit, cleaner production and food safety, Abing said. Education, STARBOOKS In terms of assistance to education, DOST’s STARBOOKS program has been gaining grounds in the public schools. The agency wants to increase the S&T library book holdings by adding STARBOOKS sites in the province. Abing reported they have identified five secondary schools to be given one set of

De la Pena said attendees will be coming from provinces in the Visayas region and some parts of Mindanao and more interactive activities with scientists are planned for the camp.

If approved, it will be the third phase of the research which aims to document the folk healing practices particularly within the area in Lazi municipality where Señora River is located.
