DOST SEI chooses Siquijor anew for 2018 Climate Science Youth Camp by Engr. Reinhold Jel Y. Abing Science Research Anaylist/IODesignate SIQUIJOR (PIA) -- For the second time around, the island province of Siquijor has been chosen as the venue of this year’s Climate Science Youth Camp, an activity where students and teachers had a unique and once in a lifetime summer camp experience. “Siquijor province with its teeming marine sanctuaries, pristine beaches, lush mangrove vegetation, amiable community, tourist spots and good climate was once again chosen by DOST SEI to be this year’s venue,” says DOST provincial director Engr. de la Pena in its press release recently. The camp aims to bring awareness on the importance of oceans and atmosphere and how they can affect our daily lives through weather disturbances and climate change. In addition, it is expected that they will be encouraged to take courses related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), the organizers said. It is organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST SEI) in cooperation with scientists from the University of the Philippine – Marine Science Institute (UP MSI), weather forecasters from DOST Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST PAGASA), and staff of DOST to page 2

DENR-7: 122T hectares planted in CV under NGP
(PIA) -- More than 122,000 hectares of land have been planted in Central Visayas under the National Greening Program (NGP) between 2011 to 2017. In a recent Kapihan sa PIA Cebu, officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-7) disclosed that the largest area covered was back in 2013 with 32,982 hectares. Regional NGP Coordinator Luisito Babaran of DENR-7 said that based on records, a total of 15,000 areas were planted in the region under NGP in 2017. This bring to 122,209.47 the total number of hectares planted with seedlings under the program. Between 2011-2017, a total of 121,590,339 million seedlings were planted in NGP areas by the different people’s organizations (POs) and stakeholders in the region. Among the commodities produced from NGP plantations are high-value crops. One of these is the “Tuburan Coffee,” a product of the cocoa seedlings planted by the POs in Tuburan town. Babaran said that in Region 7 there are many POs that planted “kape” especially in Tuburan where there are 1,800 hectares. The National Greening Program was implemented in 2011 thru Executive Order No. 26 signed by former Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III. (rmn/Rose Ann Baquero and Queenie Lou Sanico, PIA Cebu interns)

Participants immersed in a seven-day camp filled with both intensive lectures and interactive yet fun-filled experiments on topics about meteorology and oceanography by weather forecasters and scientists from DOST PAGASA and UP MSI, respectively.
During the closing ceremony, DOST SEI Dir. April 17 marks the 28th World Hemophilia Day which focuses on sharing extensive
knowledge about this bleeding disorder.
Hemophilia, Von Willebrand disease, inherited platelet disorders, and other factor
deficiencies are lifelong conditions that inhibit blood from clotting.
This can cause a minor cut or injury to bleed significantly and cause further
complication.
This can also cause slower injury recovery, profuse internal bleeding,
and in extreme cases, death.
