municipalities of Siquijor to address the prevailing traffic-related incidents and criminality in the island. According to Baja, the laid-back atmosphere in Siquijor and absence of traffic congestion embolden young drivers to drive recklessly, leading to accidents and deaths. He added there are more road safety violations in the police blotter compared to other crimes. SPPO deputy provincial director for operations Enrique Belcina attributed the rise of vehicular accidents to the drivers’ failure to follow safe driving particularly on wearing of protective helmets and other safety practices. ‘Sagip-Buhay’ project is an initiative of the PAC. It is a series of seminar workshops in all towns of Siquijor with barangay officials, young drivers and motorists in general as participants, Belcina said. Topics discussed in the training sessions include precautionary measures in driving, do’s and don’ts and how to secure a driver’s license. A demonstration on safe driving, courtesy of Lazi police station chief, Sr. Inspector Eugenio Raganas, Jr. was also held. (rac/PIA7Siquijor)

He stressed that the success of the program depends largely on the attitude and response of the beneficiaries and asked the support of the municipal officials in the monitoring and sustainability of the project. Maria Municipal Mayor Meynard Asok thanked the agencies behind the project which he said have turned the dream into reality. “The municipal budget alone is not enough to establish these facilities,” he said as he pleaded the beneficiaries to take care, make full use and sustain the project.
