DOH intensifies TB campaign in CV
(PIA) – In celebration of National Lung Month, Department of Health Region 7 intensifies its continuous effort to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) in Central Visayas. A c c o r d i n g t o Wo r l d H e a l t h Organization, TB is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide despite being treatable and curable. In 2015, the Philippines has accounted 14,000 TB-related deaths and an estimated 324,000 new TB patients. Tuberculosis is airborne which means that it can spread from one person to another by air. The early basic symptoms of tuberculosis are consistent coughing for at least a week or two, usually in the early morning, low grade fever, night sweats, and unintentional weight loss. This 2018, DOH’s national target for TB cases is 420,234. So far, they have accomplished 140,206. In Central Visayas, 10,107 cases or 44% are enrolled and 20,689 more cases need to be found. DOH constantly encourages patients and presumptive patients to get treated at TB-DOTS facilities. TB DOTS or directly observed
treatment short-course includes free testing and medications. To further push patients to undergo DOTS, DOH has expanded their services to include free chest x-rays in selected healthcare centers. Presumptive TB patients must ask for a voucher from the DOTS nurse/coordinator to avail of the service. The biggest challenge DOH faces is the incessant stigma on TB. In a 2016 TB survey, 19% of the respondents with presumptive TB subjected themselves to consultations while 41% self-medicated and 40% did nothing. DOH-7 urges the private sectors especially the academe to help them spread the right information and eventually stop the discrimination of TB. Mr. Carlo Wyne Brillantes, Nurse III, DOH-7 reiterates that patients should not be embarrassed by their condition as more than 90 percent of detected cases that went into treatment are cured. Currently, DOH strives to come up with measures to close the gap between private and public institutions in terms of treatment prices and case documentation. (Bridgette May Bayhon/PIA7)
were investigated, 177 alleged traffickers were prosecuted and 65 were convicted. The same report further said that 1,839 potential trafficking victims were identified while 1,659 possible trafficking were assisted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). At the local level, representatives of the local chief executives, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Members Cyrus Olpoc and Jaime Valesco representing the Governor and the Vice-Governor, and Vice Mayors Cyrus Vincent Calibo and Joy Lopez de Andrade for the Mayors of the Larena and Siquijor municipalities all pledged to fully support the initiatives through the formulation of policies and other executive and legislative measures. The two LGUs manifested in their plan of action the commitment to open and launch the ATIP Referral Pathway and Help Desk the soonest. We are very thankful to the FORGE for bringing this activity to the island, Board members Olpoc and Valesco said. Larena Vice Mayor Calibo affirmed his support and called the participants, particularly the members of the Provincial Inter Agency Council Against Trafficking (PIACAT) not to wait for something serious
to happen in the province before it reacts. This, he said considering the booming tourism industry in the province which he said could also possibly give rise to TIP cases. Siquijor Vice Mayor de Andrade, on one hand, pledged his 100% commitment as she claims that the municipality is already doing its part in the prevention and implementation of related programs and policies. FORGE and IACAT 7 facilitators took turns in the discussion and presentation of present global, national and local situation, trend and flows, orientation on Trafficking in Persons (TIP), Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) and Online Sexual Exploitation (OSEC). Detection of Red Flags, monitoring and surveillance of TIP cases, situational analysis and the series of workshops were also introduced with the orientation on the Basic Social Services and Programs by the social welfare officers of Larena and Siquijor. Finally, Provincial Prosecutor and PIACAT Coordinator Fiscal Ulysses Andora gave the IACAT orientation on the services and establishment of ATIP help desk and referral flow while shedding light on the Salient features of the ATIP laws and other child protection laws.
