Siquijor province warned on swine flu threat
SIQUIJOR, FEB 13 (PIA)--The Department of Agriculture (DA) regional office, Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) and the provincial government have joined hands to inform and warn the public about the African Swine Flu (ASF) through a provincial stakeholders briefing conducted at the Salagdoong Pavillion, Maria, Siquijor. DA 7 Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulation Joel A. Elumba calls Siquijodnons to be united and vigilant to protect the country’s swine industry amid threat of ASF. He added that Central Visayas, where Siquijor is part of, is a livestock and poultry-driven economy, hence the need for a concerted effort in educating the public and spreading the right information about the disease. Swine industry in the Philippines, according to ASF Regional Focal Person Dr. Daniel Ventura, is the second largest contributor to the country’s agriculture, next to rice. Citing the reports of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), he said that the total swine population in the country reached 13.13 million heads as of October 2018. Further, Central Visayas is among the top 10 regions with the highest swine population. “At least in the last five years, the Philippine swine industry was faced with challenges that yielded losses in production. The most notable decrease in stocks was caused by losses incurred by farms (mainly in Luzon) due to diseases like hog cholera, PRRS, Pseudorabies, Swine Flu and Circovirus. Considering that mortality due to ASF can fetch up to 100 per cent, incursion of the ASF virus into Philippine territories is expected to cause great damage,” he also said. Ventura said ASF outbreaks in many countries raised agitation among swine raisers and the DA and related agencies are as keen as ASF-affected areas move closer to the Philippines. “When ASF entered China, it is surmised that the outbreaks will likely yield far-reaching consequences for the swine situation in the Philippines and whole of Asia. The increasing number of outbreaks in China caused culling of a big population of pigs in farms, it is believed that numbers of pigs to be culled to prevent further spread is

likely to be a lot higher in the coming months,” Ventura said. “It is not just about proximity of the Philippines to infected countries though,” he added considering that migration of people is inevitable. It is the high number of ports in the country with limited manpower to guard the gates that is a concern. Also feared, Ventura said, is the possible entry of the virus from smuggling of pork meat and other swine unprocessed and processed products including the bulk of swills that are waste food from international flights and foreign sea vessels coming in and used as swine feeds. One of the government’s preventive measures to keep the country from the disease affecting the hog industry is the implementation of B.A.B.E.S. B.A.B.E.S., he shared, stands for B-ban pork imports, A – Avoid swill feeding, B-Block entry at international ports, E-Educate people and S-Submit Samples. Ventura emphasized that although ASF virus do not pose a threat on humans, it is a serious threat to the swine industry and the economy. “Possibilities on ASF transmission may sound remote yet but concerted effort is necessary at this stage, DA said. In the region (Central Visayas), we have to be on-guard at all times. Cebu caters to international flights and sea vessels. The recently inaugurated Panglao airport in Bohol airport has Korean flights also, he also said.
He said, a technical advisory dated August 31, 2018 has already been issued by the Department of Agriculture. Information Education and Communication (IEC) drives have likewise been initiated while ASF fliers are available at the RVQS-7 ready for distribution/dissemination to alert the public. Although there is no confirmed ASF in the country yet, Ventura insisted, sustained vigilance is sought to ensure freedom from the disease. He reiterated that ASF is a serious and strong viral disease with no treatment, no vaccine and is highly contagious that can sweep out the swine industry in a week’s time. On the same hand, provincial veterinarian, Bernadita Tabada said that PVO through the quarantine division is implementing strict monitoring of pig and pork entry here in the province. Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Jaime Valesco who represented provincial governor, Zaldy Villa, committed to fully support the measures to protect the province against ASF. Moderated by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the stakehlders forum had otehr participants as the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), the local media and representatives from transportation sector, business establishments, meat processors shippers and vendors, Municipal Agriculturist Officers (MAOs and Local Government Units (LGUs), Among other important stakeholders. Feature: ‘Basura Mo Kabuhayan Ko’ project thriving in Siquijor
By Rizalie A. Calibo Published on January 4, 2019 at www.pia.gov. ph)
It is the perfect time of the year when we have to start calling for support to this sprouting project that gives justice and integrity to God’s creations — ecology and people. Perfect because this is the time of the year when bottles, plastics, metals, papers and other recyclable items fresh from the holiday celebrations are found anywhere. Some care to segregate and reuse them, while others just toss them right away to the trash bins, ending up in landfills and hurting the environment. The Basura Mo Kabuhayan Ko project was recently introduced by a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) volunteer to some locals in Siquijor island. At least 45 beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program of the Caticugan Dumahog Pantawid-Sustainable Livelihood Association (CADUPA-SLA) in the town of Siquijor have operated and managed the Basura Heat pressed bracelet, wire organizers, and other recycled, upcycled items made from Mo Kabuhayan Ko Level II project in Brgy. plastic, metal, and wrap garbage crafted by 4Ps beneficiaries in Siquijor, Siquijor. (PIA/ Caticugan, Siquijor, Siquijor. Siquijor) The project started with the assistance of a JICA volunteer who oriented and trained them on recycling/upcycling project and donated one (1) Heat Press. The Local Government Unit of Siquijor also gave their counterpart of P100,000 worth of construction materials for the SLP Building that will be turned over to the association within this month. The association, with the various upcycled and recycled products, has been active in local government activities. In fact, it was awarded Best Practice in Plastic Upcycing during the Araw ng Bayan last year. It also participated in the recent Trabaho Negosyo job and business fair where their initial products of bracelets, fans, wire organizers, key holders, and other souvenir items made from waste materials were showcased. Having seen the opportunity of the Upcycling Project, the association sought the assistance of the Department of Social Welfare and Developmet (DSWD) through the Sustainable Livelihood Project (SLP) and proposed for funding for the SLP building and is seeking more assistance of other ajencies for PIA Siquijor’s Rizalie A. Calibo, as part of the project monitoring team, shows off the the project enhancement, product development, heat-pressed plastic and wraps as materials for the production souvenir items and tokens by the Caticugan Dumanhog Pantawid-Sustainable Livelihood Association (CADUPAand marketing. SLA). (PIA/Siquijor) And having seen the project myself and listening to how the members struggled to gather recyclable items like shampoos, candies, biscuits and diaper wraps, among others, to turn them to something cute and usable, I am reminded of the call of Philippine Information Agency Director-General Harold Clavite in his article: “New Year’s gift of fortitude: Help protect the environment.” In that article, Clavite talks about Philippine Information Agency’s commitment to environmental advocacies as he called on every citizen to take important steps to be part of the advocacy. “Whether they are government or private sector-led, companies, organizations, and communities must consider the environment in its decisions and in the conduct of celebrations, occasions, and even down to its day-to-day activities including printing of documents and ordering food,” he wrote.
