DOH: CV needs 60T bags of blood annually
(PIA)--With a population of a little over six million, Central Visayas needs at least 60,000 bags of blood from donors annually. This was disclosed by Marites Estrella, manager of National Voluntary Blood Service Program (NVBSP) of the Department of Health (DOH). By strengthening and intensifying their advocacy for the increase of voluntary blood donation, NVBSP and DOH are looking into hitting their target number of blood donors this year, which is at least one percent of the region’s total population. In a media forum held for the celebration of the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD), DOH-7 Assistant Regional Director Ellenieta Gamolo shared that the four provinces in the region are doing well in their share of blood donation. “We want to make sure that the advocacy for the voluntary blood
donation is carried by everyone in the region,” Gamolo said. She added that the region hit 70 percent of its target blood donation last year. To assure better outcome for 2019, DOH together with other National Government Agencies (NGAs) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Central Command mounted a mass bloodletting program. Over 700 volunteers from different NGAs and private institutions participated the WBDD bloodletting. “Donating blood does not only save other people’s lives, it also makes the donor healthy,” NVBSP Sub-Center Coordinator Dr. Jera Armendarez said. “Our ultimate goal really is to multiply the number of donors through advocacy promotion,” she added. With this, DOH wants to debunk misconceptions about blood donation so people with apprehensions
can finally make the courage to donate. Armendarez clarified that even people with tattoos may donate blood a year after they get inked. She also said that people with diabetes may also donate blood as long as they maintain normal blood pressure and sugar level. Even interested donors aged 18 and below can donate, given that they provide parental consent. All willing donors should weigh at least 50 kilos, abstained from drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes, had enough sleep prior to the blood extraction, and have passed the preliminary blood tests by the medical team conducting bloodletting programs. DOH Central Visayas will be conducting more mobile blood donation activities throughout the region to attain the 100 percent voluntary blood donation goal. (Jan Karla Madrio/PIA7)

He also said that at present, other government agencies like the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Department of Education (DepEd) as well as the Volunteer Probation Assistants (VPAs) have helped their office provide the utmost assistance to their clients in the form of job placement, skills training, spiritual/moral upliftment, and counselling.
