PIA to go high in explaining gov’t policies programs CEBU CITY, Jan. 5 (PIA) – Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director-General, Undersecretary Ramon Cualoping III, said the agency will go beyond informing and explain the policies of the government to avoid misinformation and disinformation. Cualoping said that with technology, news and information spread faster in today’s digital age. “But the same online platform, especially social media, has been widely used as an avenue to sow fake news,” said Cualoping. He explained that as the official information support arm of the government, it is incumbent upon PIA’s mandate to go a step further in communicating the programs, services, policies, and the agenda of the Duterte

Administration. Appointed as the new PIA chief in August 2020, Cualoping, who hails from Davao, said that under his leadership, PIA will strengthen its engagement and partnership with the public and private stakeholders to ensure the massive dissemination of timely, accurate, and relevant information. He emphasized the need to bring the right information to the grassroots level, especially in this time of the pandemic so the people will know what their government is doing. “This time of pandemic has also given PIA its best and appropriate time to perform its mandate, and that is to communicate and inform as well as explain government’s efforts and initiatives. PIA is very active especially

down to the countryside with regional offices and provincial centers throughout the country,” said Cualoping. During a visit to Cebu last month, Cualoping stressed in local radio interviews that PIA will curate content, create content, and engage with the media and other stakeholders to better explain government policies and programs. At the same time, the media and other stakeholders can become partners of PIA in communicating the right information to the public, he added. During the Cebu visit, Cualoping also met with Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella and Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes to discuss the initiatives done in both cities in preventing the community transmission of COVID-19. To serve the poor and the disadvantaged communities, to capacitate and empower them to become productive in order to achieve inclusive growth and development. This is the primary goal of the Science and Technology Communitybased for Inclusive Development Project (STC4iD Project), which for Siquijor province, is introduced to the selected community in the town of Enrique Villanueva - the Bitaug Small Coconut Farmers Association or BISMACOFA. They are one of only five recipients of the program, together with the selected communities in Sorsogon, Bukidnon, Sultan Kudarat, and Sulu. Developed by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), the project is implemented through the Siquijor State College’s (SSC) Research and Extension department with the Provincial Science and Technology

public consumers through the DOSTSSC-STC4iD-BISMACOFA Learning Center and “TIKAD” newsletter. “In the learning center and the TIKAD newsletter, people would be able to know how do the association grow and improve their capabilities as they serve the community to give quality products and learnings,” said Project Leader Philna Palongpalong during the launching of the newsletter. Tr u e t o i t s c o m m i t m e n t o f e m p o w e r i n g t h e c o m m u n i t y, BISMACOFA Secretary Julita Palahang attests that the project is a great help to the association. She said that assistance from the different agencies keep them motivated to further strengthen the association. “Madasigon ug mapasigarbohon kami nga ang asosasyon pinaagi sa STC4iD project, nakatabang gayud namo sa among pamilya. Ang among mga tanom, ang mga seminar ug training nga gipaambit nakatabang gayud kanamo labi karon sa panahon sa pandemic. to page 4

50-70M Pinoys targeted to be vaccinated in 2021 MANILA – The government targets to inoculate about 50 to 70 million individuals this year, National Policy Against Covid-19 chief implementer and vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said on Wednesday. “The massive nationwide vaccination program is anchored on the Philippine national vaccine roadmap. Its goal is to achieve the full recovery of our economy and the lives of our Filipino people,” Galvez said during a Laging Handa public briefing. Galvez said the government will carry out a strategic framework of the national vaccine roadmap. He said safety and efficacy are some of the key considerations of the government in buying Covid-19 vaccines. Galvez said the World Health Organization (WHO) solidarity vaccine trial is set to begin in the country this month. “This month, the Philippines and Colombia would take part in WHO solidarity vaccine trial,” Galvez said, noting that about 15,000 volunteers will be participating in the trial. Meanwhile, Galvez said the government is strictly conducting a full evaluation of the vaccine candidates to ensure the procurement of safe and efficient Covid-19 vaccines. “Ang gobyerno po ay may mga portfolio ng mga vaccines, ibig sabihin po nito marami tayong pagkukunan ng bakuna sa iba-ibang manufacturer. Ito po ay para matiyak na magkakaroon tayo ng sapat na bakuna para sa lahat (The government has the portfolios of the [candidate] vaccines, which means we have many sources from various manufacturers to make sure that we can acquire enough vaccines for all), particularly this year 2021,” he said. Vaccination program He said the government will strategically prioritize the inoculation of healthcare workers as well as members of vulnerable sectors such as senior citizens. It will also initially vaccinate essential workers that are vulnerable and those belong to the co-morbid groups, the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), and the remaining workforce in the country. Galvez noted that the implementation of the nationwide vaccination program “is not the sole responsibility of the government.

National Policy Against Covid-19 chief implementer and vaccine czar Sec. Carlito Galvez Jr. “Batid ng pamahalaan na hindi niya ito makakayang mag-isa. (Knowing that the government cannot do it alone). This is the reason why the whole-of-government and the whole-of-nation approach shall be adopted,” he said. There is a need to maximize manpower, expertise, and processes to ensure coordinated and integrated implementation of the vaccination campaign, he added. LGUs, private sector’s role On the other hand, Galvez cited the significant role of local government units (LGUs) and the private sector in the Covid-19 vaccination program. He re-echoed President Rodrigo Duterte’s remarks that LGUs will be in charge of identifying and profiling the priority sectors who will initially get Covid-19 jabs. Galvez said LGUs are tasked to support the national government in the mass rollout of the nationwide vaccination program. Meanwhile, the private sector, he added, will provide invaluable, technical, and financial support in the procurement of the vaccines as well as the deployment of possible Covid-19 vaccines, particularly in setting up of cold chain logistics. “In recognition of this, the President recently approved the tripartite agreement between the national government, the LGUs, and the vaccine companies,” Galvez said. Galvez reiterated that the government is serious about providing a safe and efficient Covid-19 vaccine which will be given free to all Filipinos. (PNA)
