JTG “Deter” pushes for interagency TF in Siquijor amid terror threats SIQUIJOR, July 6 (PIA) -- Siquijor province is insurgency-free but it is not exempted from terror threats, said Philippine Navy Capt. Jorge Ibarra, commander of the Joint Task Group Deter of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Ibarra further said he is pushing for the creation of a joint interagency task force to secure the province and prevent the spillover
of terrorist groups from Mindanao to enter Siquijor. This was said during the interagency workshop on Security held on Tuesday, July 4 at Salagdoong Beach Resort in Maria, Siquijor. The workshop sought to review and evaluate the different law enforcement agencies structure and its operating concepts

PIA Siquijor launches 2nd info kiosk on ASEAN, gov’t programs SIQUIJOR, July 6 (PIA) -- The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) recently launched another Information Kiosk, the second in the province and 10th in Central Visayas Region at the Old Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) in the seaport of Larena, Siquijor. Through the kiosk, the public will have access to information on the benefits and advantages of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other programs and services of the government. PIA-7 officer-in-charge Fayette Riñen said seaports are one of the strategic locations to put up the kiosk because of the passenger traffic. The Kiosk features information, education and communication (IEC) racks that

in the province of Siquijor; establish command and support relationship of the interagency structure on security; and to establish an effective interagency communication network. Ibarra said Siquijor can be the eyes and ears of terrorism so that the best effort we can do is to secure the area and keep it free from terrorism, he said. Ibarra however, assured the public that Siquijor is currently part of the areas being patrolled by Navy vessels with its 24/7 seaborne patrols even prior to the Inabanga, Bohol incident. The Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO) also lent its support as even before the clash between the government troops and ASG in Bohol happened, the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB) had sent two teams composed of 15 augmented personnel who were deployed to beach resorts particularly in San Juan which is right across Mindanao. Aside from the RPSB team, another platoon from the AFP was deployed which is enough to protect the island, SPPO Deputy Director for Operations Enrique Belcina said. Despite the terror threats, Siquijor generally remains peaceful and safe, Belcina said. While pushing for the creation of a joint task force on security in Siquijor, Ibarra also asked the support of the local communities particularly in the information collection. Ibarra added that priority efforts with a series of meetings with stakeholders are made to secure the island and deter possible attacks. He said all Philippine Navy vessels are seen patrolling the sea at all times. They only dock at the port at certain times to re-fuel or get provisions, he said. (fcr/rac/PIA7-Siquijor)

Siquijor to reduce poverty by 30%
By Manny Piñol Siquijor Governor Zaldy Villa described the Biyaheng Bukid Farmers Forum of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Wednesday as “historic.” The island’s lone congressman, Ramon Rocamora, said the outcome of the consultation with farmers and fishermen was “simply beyond my expectation.” Vice Governor Mei Ling Quezon said it was an event that the people of the island-province had never ever witnessed before. For about four hours, farmers and fisher folks of one of the country’s poorest provinces listened to the programs and projects of the DAF and later lined up for their chance to air their problems and requests from government. It was the first time, participants of the forum said, that they were able to interact directly with a Cabinet Secretary and it only happened because former Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte became President. “This would not have been possible had Mayor Duterte not been elected as President,” said former provincial board member Galileo Jumawan, leader of the Duterte for President Movement in the island. During the forum yesterday, the requests presented by the participants included a mother ’s appeal that an agricultural college be established in the island. She said her daughter wanted to be an agriculturist but since there was no agricultural school in the province, she was forced to take up education and is now a teacher. In response to her request, I asked Cong. Rocamora to sponsor a bill in Congress calling for the establishment of the Siquijor Agricultural College. Fishermen also asked for support to battle large fishing boats which are encroaching into their municipal waters depriving them of the opportunity to catch more fish. Fisheries Region 7 Director Allan Poquita was instructed to provide two Patrol Boats for each of the six towns and 120 fiberglass fishing boats for the fishermen of the island. Farmers also asked for Small Water Impounding Systems to hold water from the many springs of the island for agriculture and household use. Four units of the Solar-Powered Irrigation System were committed to draw water from the four major springs of the
island to provide irrigation water to the rice and vegetable farms. Agriculture equipment was also requested by the province’s rice and corn

farmers who produce the island’s food requirements. Agriculture Regional Director Salvador Diputado was instructed to provide the island’s farmers with two more small farm tractors and other equipment. Additional white corn and purple corn seeds will also be shipped to the province within two weeks to catch up with this year’s planting season. In the end, the leaders and people of Siquijor accepted my suggestion that a Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Road Map should be drafted to set a direction for the development of the potentials of the province in food, fisheries and aquaculture production. It was also agreed that the target of the 5-year PAF Road Map is to reduce the country’s poverty level from 55% to only 25% by the end of the term of President Duterte. Next month, the planning sessions and workshops participated in by leaders and stakeholders of the province will be held to set the path in liberating this province’s people from poverty.

contained brochures, flyers and other reading materials on ASEAN and other government programs, drop down banner that contains basic facts about ASEAN and a standee of President Rodrigo Duterte. Riñen urged the public to take time to visit the kiosk and read the available materials in order for them to appreciate ASEAN and understand its impact in our lives. The Kiosk, she said, is one platform for PIA to fulfill its mandate of providing timely, accurate and relevant information to the public. “People can only be empowered if they are enlightened, and enlightenment only comes when people have access to responsible information,” she concluded as she expressed gratitude to everyone present in the launching. Provincial Governor Zaldy S. Villa in his message during the launching said the setting up of kiosks in the province is very timely especially that Siquijor is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world. Since Philippines is one of the member states of the ASEAN, it is important that we are well informed of what is going around our neighboring countries and the benefits we can get from the integration, he said. Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Acting Division Manager Mary Louise Macalino also supported that the kiosk desires to educate the people on the vision and goals of the ASEAN Summit. Also during the launching, Larena Vice-Mayor Cyrus Vincent Calibo lauded the PIA as it sees the need for every Filipino to be informed on vital information that can improve the quality of lives of every Filipino which is reflected on the initiative of putting up the info kiosk. “The kiosk is part of the strategies in delivering developmental information to the grassroots, to present the policy directives and significant thrust of the current administration that keynotes on the Philippine chairmanship of the 2017 ASEAN,” he said. He stressed that the kiosk is timely because of the notable influx of tourists in the province. He said it serves as the tour guide and defines its location at the seaports as perfect for both locals and tourists. Meanwhile, PIA-Siquijor information center manager Rizalie A. Calibo said Siquijor province has now two information kiosks, one at the PTB at the seaport of Siquijor that was launched in April this year, and the other at the Old PTB in the seaport of Larena as the main gateways to the island. This is to spread information as the goal of the PIA, so that the people may be enlightened on how they can contribute to nation-building, she said. The launching was made in cooperation with the Siquijor Association of Information Disseminators (SAID).
