PIA chief rallies SSC students to be responsible in social media
Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director-General Harold Clavite (PIA7-Siquijor) with the Siquijor State College student leaders during the Ugnayan: Dialogue for Progress where he recognizes the youth as at the core of public information and encouraged them to be responsible communicators at all times. (PIA7-Siquijor) LARENA, Siquijor, July 19 (PIA) -- As the fire of terror spreads across the globe and affects some areas in the country, there are groups that are igniting students’ idealism to rally their support for terroristic activities, warned Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director General Harold Clavite in his talk before Siquijor State College (SSC) students. Over this, the PIA chief encouraged students to partner with the government in becoming carriers of “responsible information.” Discussing the topic on Responsible Social Media at the “Ugnayan: Dialogue for Progress,” Clavite, who had extensive experience as digital communications consultant at the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), highlighted the strategic role
of right information towards empowerment especially with sparks of terrorism bursting in some areas in the country. “A well-informed Filipino is an empowered Filipino,” Clavite stressed on the PIA’s mandate inside the packed SSC auditorium filled with high school and college students who admitted owning social media accounts. Picking on the trending propensity of social media users to share and post just about anything without much of introspection, he said the reporter mentality has caused problems. “Because we want to be the first [to share it] we do not care anymore if it’s true,” he said. Students have contributed to the 4.75 billion content shared daily and in uploading
300 millon photos daily. “If one is not responsible, in one way or another, we are becoming instruments causing panic,” Clavite said. In recent years, in the country which has over 47 million active social media users, posts like fake news, shares from satirical sites, and unvetted information have trended. Some of those shared are posts from groups mascarading as legitimate but are fake sites, bogus accounts, and trolls, which Clavite said can be easily checked. “Check the URL, links, common misspellings, errors in grammar, and make sure these are sites with editorial vetting policies,” he advised. “Be very careful and learn to scrutinize,” he urged students while engaging them to improve government. Water-starved Siquijor gets four solar irrigation systems
By Manny Piñol For an island-province gifted with several springs with crystal clear water, Siquijor is water-starved. This was one of the major issues raised by agriculture stakeholders during the Biyaheng Bukid Forum in Siquijor town which they said is affecting the food production program of the province. I visited two of the major springs and I was awed by the crystal clear spring water and even the presence of the indigenous fish specie “Paitan.” Siquijor Governor Zaldy Villa said the province has about six major springs whose waters flow directly to the sea. The absence of a system to impound the water and divert the flow towards agricultural areas and households has virtually wasted the island’s important resource. I committed to send our solarpowered irrigation system engineers to inspect the water sources with the purpose of establishing four Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems (SPIS) in the island. The SPIS was launched by President Rody Duterte in M’lang, North Cotabato in March of this year and it involves the
establishment of solar panels which powers a 10-horsepower Grundfos water pump capable of pumping out between 600 to 800 gallons of water per minute. The water will then be stored in a reservoir and could be distributed by gravity

through pipes to the rice and vegetable farms and even the households in the island. It is the most practical option for a province which would like to preserve its natural beauty because the Solar-Powered Irrigation System does not require the construction of dams which would destroy the natural beauty of the spring. The SPIS is also the most inexpensive irrigation system since there will be no power bills and very little maintenance cost. When the Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems are established, Siquijor is expected to improve its food production capability and even export organic farm products to the near islands of Negros, Bohol and Cebu. Today, the island depends on vegetables and fruits coming from Mindanao because of the scarcity of water. Things will change soon simply because Biyaheng Bukid, the provincial sorties which the department has been conducting nationwide since I assumed office last year, enabled top agriculture officials to take a first-hand appreciation of the problems of food production areas of the country.

Hypertension tops leading causes of death in Siquijor SIQUIJOR (PIA)-Hypertension is now the leading cause of morbidity in the province of Siquijor. This was disclosed by Integrated Provincial Health Officer (IPHO) Dr. Josephine Bucol during the 43rd Launching of the Nutrition Month Celebration at the Queengate Center, Larena, Siquijor. The provicial health officer said cases of hypertension in the island have increased, with some high school students already suffering from hypertension. She said the provincial health board is planning to lobby a resolution to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) that will prohibit the selling of fatty, salty, and sugary foods and beverages at the school cafeterias provincewide. She also urged the public to have regular check-up at their respective Rural Health Units (RHUs) since health services and medications at the RHUs are free. She also called for the adoption of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. Bucol said close monitoring is done to regularly check the health status of every Siquijodnon as she urged the barangay nutrition scholars (BNS) and the barangay health workers (BHWs) to be diligent in their monitoring. “Self-discipline to stick with healthy diet, regular check-up, and regular proper exercise are the significant keys to age gracefully and healthy.” Bucol added.
Sugod niining adlawa, dili na mahimong mogamit, magbaligya ug mopalit og mga tobacco products s a m g a p a m p u b l i k o n g l u g a r.
State of the Nation Address (SONA) Julyo 24. Bahad niya: pagpakigbatuk niini sa way paglubad ug way puas. (rahc/PIA-7/Bohol)
