PRC-Siquijor continues blood donation drive amid COVID-19 SIQUIJOR (PIA) -- The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) conducted monitoring and surveillance during the COVID-19 health crisis in view of the locally stranded individuals (LSIs) in the province who need assistance. According to Rowena Maputi, chapter administrator of PRC-Siquijor, their office has given food assistance to LSIs good for three days. The food pack includes five kilos of rice, five canned goods, and five packs of noodles. The food pack for one week ration include ten to 12 kilos of rice, one kilo of mongo, one kilo brown sugar, soy sauce and salt, ten packs of noodles, six cans of sardines, eight cans of corned beef, and one liter of edible oil. To ensure enough supply of blood, PRC-Siquijor also continues its blood donation campaign amid the health crisis to answer the needs of patients in the locality. Maputi said that Larena town through the Rural Health Unit has scheduled Mobile Blood Donations (MBD) in the barangays and offices and donated bags of blood to PRC. The process of availing the blood services includes a written request issued by the doctor indicating the type of blood and quantity needed. A blood donor card can also be presented when in need of blood from the PRC, she said. In instances when blood donor cards are not available, the PRC can still provide blood with a fee of P1,800 per unit of pack, but Maputi emphasized that this is not payment for blood but for laboratory test called Blood Processing Fee. Currently, PRC-Siquijor has two Medical Technologists and one Nurse. These medical personnel were hired on Feb. 2, 2020 and started conducting information campaign in schools and different communities about COVID-19 and the handwashing campaign. “A total of 1,000 cakes of soap were distributed to 32 communities/ schools from February to March until the General Community Quarantine was declared,” she said. PRC also implements a psycho-social program, but due to the prohibition of face-to-face activities, the office can cater only through phone calls. To date, two phone calls were received and addressed accordingly. For more details and assistance, PRC can be reached through 09618125022 for Smart users and 09368318399 for Globe or TM users. Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO) director PCol. Engelbert Soriano giving his keynote speech during the Induction of Siquijor Provincial Tourism Council (SPTC) officers at Coco Grove Resort, San Juan, Siquijor. (rac/ PIA7-Siquijor) There is a change in the business and tourism industries in the island province of Siquijor brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. But while the island takes a break from the normal conduct of businesses, Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO) director PCol. Engelbert Soriano noted in his keynote speech during the Induction of Siquijor Provincial Tourism Council (SPTC) officers that Siquijor is able to maintain its unique biodiversity which is the main tourist attraction, coupled with genuine Filipino hospitality. This, he noted, despite tourism being the hardest hit with almost 90 percent of all businesses in this country expecting to lose more than 50 percent of their 2020 revenues and the projected decline in tourist arrivals in the Philippines this year at 3.9 million, as compared to 8.3 million in 2019. “Looking at the positive side of it, the resilience of the Filipino spirit continues to shine in the Island of Siquijor. We are so blessed to enjoy this COVID-free

environment,” Soriano said of the island’s zero COVID-19 status for the first seven months which can be attributed to the firm stance of the local leadership against violators of the executive orders and Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) resolutions. He also lauded the determined efforts of all the stakeholders in trying to maintain a virus-free island. Soriano highlighted the role of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the viability of business by sustaining peace and order as the major concern that influences both ordinary citizens and big time investors in choosing a place to visit. “It is the occurrence of harmony, characterized by lack of violence, and freedom from fear,” he added. Ensuring security, public order and safety as some of the fundamental strategies of the Philippine Development Plan for 20172022, the SPPO director said it is ideal that everyone should work together for public good and for the welfare of the Siquijodnons as a whole. “Bereft of any personal interest or bias we can move this province to become the

top investment hub and tourist destination in the world,” he said as he assured the SPTC and the whole province of Siquijor of the local PNP’s loyalty to its mission to serve and protect the Siquijodnons. “Rest assured that your local police will remain loyal and firm in its mandate to maintain peace and order, prevent and control arms, while we remain grateful and blessed for the full support of our local gpovernment units,” he said. Meanwhile, newly-inducted Chairperson of the Siquijor Provincial Tourism council, Joy Dominie Uy Chan, admitted they have a huge responsibility in the council, especially in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic where movements and operations are limited. She believes, however, that with the strong and dependable council plus a supportive government, this can be overcome. “There are known and unknown things ahead of us but we never let fear rule our hearts,” she said.
