SIQUIJOR (PIA)— The Parish Youth Council of Larena town is always on the move to empower the youth as the “modern day disciples in our communities.” With the theme “Larenian Youth in Mission: Beloved. Gifted. Empowered,” the Sixth Parish Youth Assembly (PAYA) will be held on Oct. 25-27, 2019 at the Saint Vincent Ferrer Parish Marian Hall, Larena, Siquijor. It aims to strengthen its mission of instilling Christian values among the youth and bringing out the best in them. The theme focuses on the pastoral concern of the Philippine Catholic Church that observes 2019 as the Year of the Youth which aims to empower young people to become faithful Christians and as Servants of the Lord, said Larena Parish Youth Council (PYC) and PAYA Assembly Chair Vincent Mamhot in a letter. “We also anchored this year’s
PAYA to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which promotes for sustainability and innovative solutions of the pressing issues we are facing now in the global arena. It further aims to influence youth and community leaders to think, work, and act together with the use of specific and term based exercises to give the participants the exciting experience of ‘learning by doing’ and ‘learning while having fun,” Mamhot said. Mamhot said PYC received a 90 percent A (Excellent) evaluation score in last year’s 5th PAYA and is hopeful that this year’s activity will be even better. Larena PYC has been active in various youth and campus ministries with its involvement in environmental protection, pilgrimages, and other efforts and programs for youth development. The three-day assembly, he said, will equip youth and community leaders with the skills and ChristCentered values to make their leadership
more meaningful and dynamic through adopting spiritual approaches. It will feature activities such as the Young Leaders Plenary Sessions, Ice Breakers, Tribu Outdoor Challenge, Cultural and Gawad Night, Spiritual Fellowships, Praise and Worship, and many more. He said the PYC is diligently working on bringing the most competent and deserving youth and community leaders around the Municipality of Larena. The assembly will be highlighted with interactive plenary sessions, cultural presentations, spiritual fellowships, and competent speakers from prestigious and well-respected groups and national organizations. “We hope to strengthen our alliances as we prepare the youth of today as modern day disciples in our communities,” Mamhot added. DOH to parents: Avail of newbor n screening, polio vaccine for infants
The Department of Health (DOH-7) is urging parents of newborn babies to avail of newborn screening to protect their infants from diseases or viral infections. During the Kapihan sa PIA held to mark the observation of National Newborn Screening Awareness Week, Jaika Jel Besira, Newborn Nurse Coordinator of DOH-7 Center for Health Development, said newborn screening is important to detect genetic diseases in infants as early as possible. This procedure is done through a prick on the heel (kiting) of the baby, where there is a large volume of blood supply. Dr. Joan Albito from DOH-7 said the screening is also vital to alert parents on the different ways to combat diseases. Newborn screening in the Philippines started in 1996, and at this year, there are now over 29 diseases that can be detected by the newborn screening process. It is now mandatory for parents to bring their child to the nearest health care center to avail of newborn screening. For parents who are members of PhilHealth, newborn screening is free. There are confirmed cases of diseases detected during the newborn screening process. Genetic diseases in over 428 babies have been detected as of April 2019, majority of which are congenital hypothyroidism. It was last month that a polio case was confirmed in the Philippines after years of being free from the disease. Dr. Van Philip Baton of DOH-7 said it was in 1993 when the last case of polio was recorded in Cebu. Polio remains a big problem when it comes to the provision of public health care as there has been low immunization coverage for the past years. Health officials warned the public to watch out for flu-like symptoms when it comes to the polio infection. The infection can also manifest as paralysis, which would affect the patient for life. The most dangerous case is when it affects the limbs and muscles of the respiratory system like the diaphragm. Baton, during the forum, discussed the different precautions against the viral infection, such as taking the oral or injectable polio vaccine and avoid drinking from contaminated water sources. The vaccination for polio should be given to babies less than five years old. They can be vaccinated as early as six weeks. For those who may have forgotten if they have undergone vaccination or have lost their vaccination records are encouraged to get vaccinated as early as possible. With the emergence of “anti-vaxxers”, or those who are against vaccination, Baton said it is important for them to keep an open mind. “Not getting your babies vaccinated does not only affect your kid, but the entire population is put at risk,” said Baton. Among gihangyo ang publiko sa paglikay pagdala ug mga “frozen meats” ug uban pang “pork-related products” labi na gikan sa ASF-infected places,” sumala pa ni Tabada. (rac/PIA7-Siquijor)
