DOH: Food vendors must have health certificate
(PIA) -- Officials from the Department of Health Region 7 (DOH7) has reiterated during a forum that food vendors should have a health card certifying that they do not have a communicable disease that would put the health of their customers at risk. During the weekly Association of Government Information Officers Philippine Information Agency (AGIOPIA 7) Forum, DOH-7 Regional Sanitary Engineer John Ray Labandero, said food vendors must be healthy in their business as a food vendor, otherwise they may transmit diseases to their customers in the process of food handling. The 15th section of the Code of Sanitation in the Philippines mandates that “no person shall be employed in any food establishment without a Health Certificate issued by the local health authority.” The health certificate is issued only after food vendors have completed the required physical and medical examinations and the immunizations are administered at prescribed intervals. Labandero added that vendors who are engaged in food business should acquire sanitary permits issued by their local government units. Regular sanitation inspection must also be conducted. On the other hand, ambulant food vendors are only allowed to sell prepacked foods. According to the Code of Sanitation in the country, ambulant food vendors shall sell only bottled food drinks, biscuits, and confectioneries. They are prohibited to sell food that require the use of utensils. “As long as the local health office regularly monitors these establishments dapat naa gyud health card,” Labandero reiterated. Local health authorities have the responsibility to make periodic inspections to enforce maintenance of adequate sanitation in food establishments. They can also prohibit the use of items that, in their opinion, are unsanitary or cause food and drinks to become unfit for human consumption. “(There should be) strict implementation of sanitation in the area and keep the area clean,” Labandero said.
