(rac/PIA7-Siquijor) The Siquijor Police Provincial Office (SPPO) boasts of its first all-female police force in the Philippines that was launched in the town of Maria, Province of Siquijor. Mariang Pulis is composed of 21 female police officers headed by Police Captain Judith Besas as the Chief of Police. It is being pilot tested in Siquijor province with the aim of empowering policewomen at the tactical level in police operation and administration, said PCol. Angela Rejano, SPPO provincial director. During the launching PCol. Ildebrandi Usana, Deputy Regional Director for Administration, representing Police Regional Office (PRO-7) Regional Director PBGen. Debold M. Sinas, said

SPPO is making history with the existence of an all-women police service, which is claimed to be the first in the country if not the world. He said it all started with RA 7192 which calls for Women in Development and Vision Building as he cited the first female cadet who belongs to class 1997. Usana said Maria town has been chosen because apart from connecting the name of the Police Station to the town itself, the PNP also wants to help build the place as a showcase not only within the Philippines but around the world. Usana also talked about the little changes among women officers on the wearing of skirts. “Why do women need to wear skirts whenever performing their duties? They should be wearing

pants, because after all that doesn’t make them less of a woman,” he said while recognizing the women police as partners of men in development and nationbuilding for a gender-friendly police force. “I should say, without fear of contradiction, that the most efficient man in the world is a woman,” Usana said. He also lauded the role of the Mariang Pulis as the show window of the PNP in making the organization known to the world. He challenged them to do their best and make the men in the organization feel that they are also set to lead, serve and protect, and make a big difference in the lives of the people.
