DA pushes for consumption of local rice from page 1

This is vis-a-vis its production of only 2,257.678 metric tons in an area planted at 659.3857 hectares in 2017 and even much lower at 1,768.0218 MT in 573.8586 hectares in 2018, said Abada. The record also shows Siquijor as only 14.47 percent rice sufficient in 2017 and 11.19 percent in 2018, although Abada quickly admits that the difference is satisfied with the commercial rice coming from other provinces or supplies from the National Food Authority (NFA) and from other alternative staple foods or crops of which Siquijodnons are known to be fond of. “Mokaon man gud ta ug camote, mais, saging, ug uban pa, mabuhi ra gyud ta (We will surely survive because we eat camote or sweet potato, cassava, corn, banana and other crops),” she said while recommending the consumption of brown rice which has higher milling recovery and is more nutritious than white rice. DA-7 Information Officer Cheryl de la Victoria, in her call for support, stressed the need to make eating local rice as a habit, to be wise in choosing rice, and to patronize locally produced rice as a way of helping Filipino rice farmers to earn. She said the public’s role in supporting local rice is by changing first their mindset that foreign goods are better than local goods, make the most effort to buy and eat local rice, and encourage family and friends to cook both at home and for parties. Rice consumers should educate themselves about its nutritional advantage and junk the notion that eating brown rice is eating a low quality of rice, she added. Likewise, consumers should think wisely and broaden their preferences in buying rice displayed at the market. Not because imported rice is well-packaged and attractive does not mean it is worth buying already. De la Victoria emphasized that they should consider the variety of rice and its place of origin and packaging including weight indication. Consuming local rice, she said, does not always mean it is safe and that rice imports are not, but at least they know how local rice is being produced that it does not need to travel to reach the tables unlike rice imports. As a consumer, it is very important to take into consideration that the rice people consume must be nutritionally beneficial and will not cause any harm to public health. Furthermore, patronizing locally produced rice will not just contribute to the country’s local economy but a big help to rice farmers’ everyday living. Buying from local farmers’ produce is an act of nationalism because as rice is bought from them, the public is making them believe that farmers are important. Consumers must value the efforts of rice farmers and encourage them to continue farming to have Kaning Pinoy on our tables, shared de la Victoria. The 2019 National Rice Awareness Month celebration aims to ensure the safety of consumers on rice consumption and promotes the consumption of locally produced rice. Specifically,

DA-7 pushes for consumption of local rice

Provincial Rice Coordinator Nida Abada presenting the five-year record from the Provincial Agricultural Office that showed an increase in rice consumption against the limited production of only 2,257.678 metric tons in Siquijor province. (PIA7 Siquijor) it aims motivate farmers to continue producing quality rice for consumers, encourage consumers to patronize local rice and support local rice farmers, promote awareness of the value of locally produced rice, and engage consumers, rice farmers, teachers and students, public influencers and opinion leaders with activities in promoting the consumption of local rice and responsible consumption. This year’s Be RICEponsible Campaign encourages rice farmers to continue to produce quality rice in response to the competition with imported rice while reaching out consumers to support locally produced rice, and be wise on their rice preferences for consumption. Through this, farmers will remain the key factor in minimizing rice importation and attaining rice security, while the consumer patronizes their produce and help rice farmers to increase their income. The theme “Buy local. Eat local. Support Filipino rice farmers.” imparts the importance and advantage of eating safe and nutritious rice to consumers, instilling the value of patriotism in supporting the local rice farmers, and helping the Philippine rice industry as a whole. by Rizalie Anding Calibo The Department of Agriculture (DA-7) is calling anew for the public to support to local rice farmers as it strengthens its advocacy of promoting the consumption of locally grown rice. Observing National Rice Awareness Month this November with the theme, “Buy local. Eat local. Support Filipino rice farmers,” various information, education and communication (IEC) activities have been lined up prior to its kick-off ceremony. In Siquijor province, the IEC campaign started with a Kapihan sa PIA and InfoSharing with members of the Siquijor Association of Information Disseminators (SAID) to get the support of local government units (LGUs), policymakers, information officers, and the public in raising awareness on the value of locally produced rice and promoting for local and responsible consumption. Rice is the staple food of 80 percent of the Filipino population. It accounts for the bulk of their caloric intake and protein consumption, as well as 25 percent of food expenditures of the poorest 30 percent of the population. Records reveal that consumption of rice increased tremendously from 2003 which was only 26,000 tons, compared now to the average daily consumption of Filipinos at 33,000 tons. For the province of Siquijor, Provincial Rice Coordinator Nida Abada in her presentation of the five-year record from the Provincial Agricultural Office, showed that Siquijor province rice consumption increases yearly from 8,699.32 metric tons in 2014; 8,784.81 in 2015; 8.965.09 in 2016; 8,953.16 in 2017 to 9,043.68448 MT in 2018. to page 4
