SSC prexy underscores ASEAN benefits in PIA oratorical, essay contests SIQUIJOR (PIA) – State University and College (SUC) President Dr. Ma. Imogen T. Quilicot of the Siquijor State College (SSC) sees the relevance of the ASEAN Oratorical and Essay Contests in the province of Siquijor. In her opening message, Quilicot said the contests are imperative especially that the ASEAN motto, “One vision, One Identity, and One Community’” is not totally understood by the youngsters involved in the activities. The activity is the avenue for information dissemination on the benefits of ASEAN to the Philippines and to Siquijor province in particular, the SSC president said. A total of 56 elementary and high school students from public and private schools in the province joined the ASEAN Oratorical and Essay Writing Contests conducted at SSC on December 1, 2017. Initiated by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in cooperation with the Siquijor Association of Information Disseminators (SAID) and the Department of Education (DepEd), the contests focused on the benefits of ASEAN. Twenty six schools participated in the Oratorical Contests while 30 schools joined in the essay writing contests.

PPA-DOJ recruits more volunteer assistants

SIQUIJOR, December 18 (PIA)— The Parole and Probation Administration of the Department of Justice (PPA-DOJ) is recruiting more Volunteer Probation Assitance (VPAs) in line with Proclamation Decree 968. This is to generate maximum citizen participation and community involvement in the overall process of the client’s rehabilitation, Senior Supervising Probation and Parole Officer (SPPO) Antonnette Baldonado said. She said, the VPAs will augment the human resource capacity of their office which has only three personnel with more than 80 clients province wide.

The main task of the VPA is to assist in the supervision of probationers, parolees and conditional pardonees in their respective communities. She said community services are offered to their clients not as a punishment but to allow the community to appreciate the worth of the offender. This will lead to gaining back his or her self-digity, she said. The PPA-DOJ has two flagship programs for the rehabilitation and development of the clients. These are the therapeutic community (TC) and the restorative justice (RJ), both of which

need active and committed VPAs in order to attain holistic success in the implementation of the program. An orientation-seminar was conducted recently to the newly recruits composed of barangay officials, retired policemen, retirees from different profession and other concerned citizens. Topics tackled during the orientation also include Overview of the criminal justice system, Probation Law of the Philippines, PPA Rehabilitation Program and Basic Interviewing and Communication Skills. Siquijor teachers cross borders, go extra mile by Darlene T. Patagoc, EVNHS Teacher

Maka-Dios, Maka-Tao, Makabayan, at Makakalikasan are the four Core Values in the Department of Education. We are embodied with these values and are expected to impart them to our learners. To help us in achieving this goal, we cross the borders, we submit ourselves to be trained, to explore, to immerse, and to extend our service as an NGO (non-government organization) volunteer to our fellowmen to the island of Palawan particularly to Batak and Tagbanua Tribes. This is not a call o f duty, but our way of refreshing and rebuilding ourselves because as teachers, we sometimes tend to become like empty glasses that need refilling in order to refresh others especially our clients, our learners. Our amazing journey with my colleague, Sheila Tuale Alcala, started on April 10, 2017. Instead of spending summer vacation with our families, we decided to join the Go Extra Mile (GEM) 2017, a 17 day short term mission exposure trip to Puerto Princesa, Palawan organized by an international NGO named Operation Mobilisation Philippines. That summer, we left our loved ones and entrusted everything to God as we stepped forward, out of our comfort zones, out from the four walls of our classrooms. The author, Darlene (left) with her co-teacher Shiela T. Alcala It was not an easy task, but we kept (right) and other volunteers during the Go Extra Mile (GEM) exposure reminding ourselves that once you are called and trip to Puerto Princesa, Palawan. you obey, God is in control. The first week, though, was so exciting which involved meeting new friends from different parts of the country and some from the other parts of the world. For a teacher of fifteen years, still the experience was so new to me. I still had to go through a series of adjustments and a good amount of patience in order to build friendship among others. But God is good. We easily got along with others. iSIQUIJOR is the Morning devotions helped me so much knowing it nourished my hungry soul. God to make us whole again. Aside from renewing our soul during the course, our physical strength and tolerance were tested as we were exposed to Tribal Youth Camp. It was a five-day activity, and it was so surprising to be assigned as the tribal cook. Indeed, it was challenging cooking meals for the tribal participants, you do not know how. But it was fulfilling knowing that we have fed those young tribal people. Malaria is the worst threat we needed to face, but this could not hinder us to continue serving our fellowmen. Despite the heat, uncomfortable sleep in tent for five days, bath in the river, and the tribal food we had to take, joy was still there. We could say that it finally made sense. Our effort, our time and stay in the middle of the forest were worth it all. We ended the camp with lessons, and overflowing hopes in our hearts. Finally, the last week of the training came. It was the community immersion. We had to travel to different parts of Palawan. Sheila went to the west coast facing West Philippine Sea, and I headed to the northern part. Fear is my first enemy, but eventually it turned into courage that allowed me to finish the race and completed the task in order that we could go back home safe and sound. We were blessed with a generous host family. We worked as a team, composed of different cultures since we came from different places. We walked four kilometers a day in doing the assigned task for the team like doing children ministry and door to door visitation. Waking up every day was always a miracle for us. Living with them, immersing with the tribe is priceless. Playing with kids and seeing them happy was our best moment. Go Extra Mile 2017 is a blessing to me as a teacher. The experiences I went through are beyond compare, and I Darlene and Shiela in one of their will forever cherish them. “not-so-comfortable” sleep with The experiences revive me and remind me what my the tribal participants in Puerto true calling is. I was completely healed and renewed and got to know my real self better. Princesa, Palawan. After everything, we finally said that we arrived safe in the Port of Siquijor. Thank God, we survived.
