69 brgys in Siquijor adopt zero waste program
SIQUIJOR, Jan. 28 (PIA) -- At least 69 barangays or 52 percent of the 134 total barangays in the province have completed the construction of their materials recovery facility (MRF) while 31 others are continuously working on the construction, reported the Mother Earth Foundation (MEF) Siquijor. MEF Siquijor has released a progress report of the zero waste project in the Province of Siquijor by the end of 2020. The report highlighted the development of the zero waste program in the province. MEF said some of the barangays are still completing the components of their MRF but are fully functional. Waste collection systems is also placed and monitored by MEF, implementing the “No Segregation, No Collection” policy. Project Officer Sherra Marie Cervantes said Phase 1 of the project has just been completed and the results were promising. “Although very challenging lalo ngayong may pandemic pero very supportive ang ating mga council especially during IEC and collection. Mahirap sya dahil nasa new normal tayo ngayon, pero nagagawa naman ng council. Halos hindi nga kami makapaniwala na more than half na yung accomplishment namin, so very grateful talaga,” Cervantes said. In addition, Cervantes called on residents of Siquiijor to continue supporting the project and follow the waste management rules set by the barangay. MEF has been continually conducting information and education campaigns in barangays to educate households on how to segregate waste at home. Burning of dry leaves and plastic wastes have been highly discouraged. This year, MEF is working on the second phase of the project. “This year, itutuloy namin ang pagbigay ng technical support sa mga (we will continue to provide technical support to the) barangay, especially sa MR4F operation, monitoring, enforcement, and evaluation sa ESWMP nila. Patuloy po kaming maglilibot sa buong province para i-monitor sila. Magiging mas challenging pero handa po kami, para sa (this is going to be challenging but we are ready) Mother Earth,” she said. Central Visayas heightens vigilance vs ASF
` Call for public vigilance and more stringent border measures shall be implemented in all ports of Region 7 following the official declaration of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Region 8 - the first case of ASF in the Visayas. Field reports on alleged high mortalities among swine population in Abuyog, Leyte since the first week of January (although unconfirmed yet at that time) already triggered an alarm, prompting the Central Visayas Animal Disease Surveillance Advisory Committee (CV ADSAC) under the Department of Agriculture Region 7 to convene in a virtual meeting on Jan. 13 the Chief Veterinarians in all four provinces and other City Veterinarians together with the Regional Vet Quarantine Services 7 (RVQS-7) and Director Eduardo Oblena of the National Meat Inspection Services – Region 7 (NMIS-7). Personnel of the local government units and the RVQS-7 deployed in ports are directed to strictly check all documents accompanying transported swine (including pork) and ensure that all livestock transport vehicles are properly disinfected (disinfection certificates must be present at all ports). Online application for shipping permits is already enforced by the RVQS-7 with an additional requirement for submission of a route plan. Bohol issued on Nov. 26, 2020 E.O. No. 56 s2020 regulating transport and movement of pigs. Bohol is now implementing regulation where trucks containing pigs are unloaded and loaded only in designated areas within their ports. Meanwhile, the Province of Cebu will soon release a new Executive Order regarding establishment of quarantine regulations on the entry of livestock transport vehicles and vessels into the province of Cebu. The veterinarians have further discussed the designation of specific ports in the region for entry and exit for trucks from Luzon and other regions affected by ASF. The group also agreed to the conduct of random blood sample collections on slaughterhouses for negative surveillance. The laboratory tests will be conducted at the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory-7 (RADDL-7).
Jan. 27 (PIA) -- With government mandated lockdowns set in place, the Municipality of Siquijor in Siquijor Province has turned to backyard gardening for sustainable development this year to recover from the economic damage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Siquijor Mayor Richard Quezon, during the Network Briefing program hosted by Sec. Martin Andanar of the Presidential Communications Operations Office on Jan. 27, 2021, said the municipal government started the backyard gardening for the local farmers and opened small businesses for their wives to sustain their livelihood. Quezon said before the pandemic, the government implemented the One Town One Project (OTOP) focused solely on tourism but with the lockdown, it has turned to other sustainable projects like basket making and the opening of the local food market. He said they are looking into selling local food products and specialties outside of Siquijor like peanuts, torta, bibingka, bocayo, among others. The mayor also highlighted infrastructure projects as some of their areas of focus for this year like the turnover of the access roads leading to Candanay Sur in Pangi town, Siquijor and the new Passenger Terminal Building of the Siquijor Airport. “We are so much thankful to the congressman (Jake Villa) and the governor (Zaldy Villa) for having implemented the road projects especially in our municipalities,” Quezon said. These roads will really help in the tourism program and will allow visitors easier access in going to the airport, seaports, or even the mountain resorts, he added. With the airport finished, the mayor said if not for the pandemic, Siquijor would already be expecting an influx of tourists. In an earlier Network Briefing program, Gov. Zaldy Villa had expressed his interest in slowly opening the Island of Siquijor to local tourists to revive its economy. However, on Jan. 22, the Siquijor Provincial Task Force COVID-19 confirmed on Thursday night that an 85-year-old
Mayor Richard Quezon of the Municipality of Siquijor talks about how sustainable backyard gardening is and how it been a big help to Siquijodnons’ livelihood during the Network Briefing program hosted by Sec. Siquijor SK prex trumpets programs to address mental health issues SIQUIJOR, Jan. 27 (PIA) -- Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation President Brylle Deeiah Tumarong of the province of Siquijor has announced several initiatives to address mental health issues in the province in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the Laging Handa press briefing hosted by Presidential Communications Operations Office Sec. Martin Andanar, Tumarong said the pandemic has brought a lot of challenges to Siquijodnons. Citing reports of the seven “successive” suicide cases from August to December last year, Tumarong said the province, in an Executive Order issued by Gov. Zaldy Villa, created a sub-task group known as the Siquijor Provincial Mental Health Task Force to look into the matter and come up with plans, programs, and activities addressing the alarming issue. One of the programs is training young individuals to help in the group dynamics, giving psychological first aid and stress debriefing not only to the young Siquijodnons but to the frontliners. Tumarong also considered the creation of school level-groups where students can freely express their thoughts and feelings as well as opening sports tournaments while observing the minimum health protocols. These and more plans incorporated in the Young House Heroes Initiatives (YHHI) and Youth for Peace-Siquijor/One Visayas can be implemented with the support of the provincial government, she said while underscoring the province’s good governance, transparency, cooperation, and the spirit of Bayanihan as the effective ingredients to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, terrorism and other challenges. She urged the young Siquijodnons to continue adopting the spirit of Bayanihan, observing the public minimum health standards, and to be responsible in sharing news and information.
