Kapanig’s raw milk now sterilized with DOST’s pasteurizer

The Muncipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of the Municipality of Siquijor conducted simultaneous campaign on proper waste segregation at barangay Tongo,Candanay Sur, barangay San Antonio and Tambisan to educate the households on proper handling and segregation of wastes and collection system and schedule. Upon monitoring, the team said they learned that most of the households have stopped following the ‘No Segregation, No Collection’ policy,

prompting them to conduct IEC to remind them of the importance of the policy to health and environment. They said residents suggested to the barangay officials that it is best to do house-to-house collection so they will be guided. They also willingly agreed to pay the garbage collection fee every month, they said. The attendees were also informed on their barangay’s waste collection schedule and collection fee respectively.

Coordination meeting conducted by the Provincial Government of Siquijor thru the Provincial Tourism Office with Aleson, Montenegro, Ocean Jet Shipping Lines, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA)-Siquijor, Siquijor Tourist Police, and the Provincial Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) to discusss and come up with solutions to the issues and concerns of travellers particularly the congestion in the arrival receiving area and the issuance of tickets to outgoing passengers.

On a rainy morning on April 7, 2022, with a sheet of gray sky and with mostly women in attendance, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Provincial Science and Technology Center Siquijor took the initiative to demonstrate the use of a pasteurizer granted to the Kababayen-an Alang sa Paglambo sa Nasudnong Industriya sa Gatas (KAPANIG) of Cangmunag, San Juan, Siquijor, incorporated under Technical Training On The Use of the Newly-Acquired DOST Pasteurizer. Provincial Director Engr. Mario de la Peńa began with reminding KAPANIG members not to turn on the pasteurizer without water and to turn it off and disconnect it from the main supply before cleaning the milk pot. Since its inception in 2003, KAPANIG’s sterilization of its raw milk was done without the aid of a technology. Members had to use big kettles over gas burners to perform the process of pasteurization. `Starting today, they are now into a safer, more reliable, and more secure way of killing pathogens considered as bad bacteria found in raw milk. Victoria Maglasang, chairwoman of KAPANIG, said: “We are lucky here in our

(DOST Siquijor) association. DOST’s intervention through its provision of technology and technical advisory has made our life as milk processors become lighter and easier. I think most of the members are old and I find all what DOST has given us to be a gracious act of valuing us women and our capacity to make our lives productive.”

Department of Agriculture Sec. William Dar said they are monitoring a looming food crisis possibly by the 2nd semester of the year brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Ukraine war, and the rise in prices of petroleum products. D a r said they have a directional plan to handle the looming food crisis involving rebooting Philippine agriculture towards growth and recovery and resilient and sustainable agriculture. Currently, Dar said the country still has enough food supply and “we want to sustain and add to that.” He emphasized, however, that the government must give topmost priority to agriculture and allocate a big budget for the realization of DA’s plans.

Eutequia Cenas, one member of KAPANIG, echoed: “We are simply happy. Our milk products have been our lifeblood. Thank you, DOST. We would always take heart that because of KAPANIG, we as members have sent our children and grandchildren to finish college.” With the characteristic humor of Engr. de la Peña, the cold atmosphere turned into a warm learning session. He said: “Do you know the German word for a milk pot?” “Well, it’s called milchbehalter,” he said as he rattled his tongue with the word, sounding so strange to the burst of laughter from the members. “I am happy to be with you this morning. I am very proud that DOST has been a constant supporter to women’s advocacies like yours - with your livelihood undertaking for processing dairy products. Your value as women is indispensable. For around 20 years, KAPANIG has survived. And that only tells how much you have seriously poured in your effort and time to your vision. I salute you as women of development.” Currently, KAPANIG is processing around 26-30 liters of raw milk every day sourced out from holstein cows. The two-and-a-half-hour session ended with light snacks of milk and biscuits. It was still drizzling outside and the women had to stay as they still prepared for orders of bottles of milk under a supplemental feeding program sponsored by one government agency. (PR)

The new set of officers are, namely: Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) Siquijor Branch Manager Judith Franco as the President; Philippine National Bank Branch Manager Ma. Emily Zamora, Vice-President; BDO Network Bank Branch Head Rhenny Rose Gom-os, Secretary; BPI Banko Head Reynante Quilicot, Treasurer; and Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) Branch Head Deo Michael Angelo Olasiman, Public Relations Officer. Meanwhile, BSP Dumaguete Cash Operations Division Head Josefina Resurreccion announced the release of the Polymer version of P1,000 bills which she said are smoother, cleaner and stronger.

She said Polymer notes are hygienic and sanitary, and are less susceptible to viral and bacterial transmission due to their smooth and non-absorptive surfaces compared to abaca and cotton old notes. They can be sanitized with less risk of being damaged, Resurreccion added. They are also sustainable and environment-friendly as they have smaller carbon footprint and their production requires less water, energy, and other resources. Polymer banknotes can withstand extreme temperatures and are water and dirtresistant, which makes them suitable for tropical countries like the Philippines. The most important feature, Resurreccion said, is that Polymer banknotes are more secure as they are difficult to replicate or counterfeit. The meeting also discussed the issues and challenges commonly faced by the Siquijor Bankers such as emergency withdrawals and other currency requirements given the limited trips to and from the island.
