A landmark in the idyllic town of Sewickley, 2 Beaver Street was built in 1902 by W.H. Seaman (costing $35,000) for James and Louise Todd. Located in one of Sewickley Village’s most sought-after neighborhoods on a magnificent .77-acre lot, this home is within easy walking distance of Sewickley Village’s wonderful shops and restaurants as well as local schools and clubs. Designed by Rutan & Russell, a nationally acclaimed architecture firm known for projects such as The Schenley Hotel (now William Pitt Student Union) and St. Augustine’s church in Lawrenceville, this stately home incorporates an eclectic mix of the Prairie and Tudor Revival styles. The rough-cut stone façade is a nod to the Richardsonian Romanesque style and expresses a “pebbly” quality in its superbly detailed exterior, which is enhanced by slightly darker stones surrounding the door and window openings. The tiles of the handsome tiled roof run upward in straight lines and flare slightly at the eave edges to give an Asian lilt to an otherwise heavy composition. Other subtle design details include the timbered corner corbels over the entrance steps. A particularly impactful feature is the polygonal stone bay with sharply pointed mullions and startling detail at the back corner of the house. Original owner James Todd was a varnish manufacturer who made his fortune after he developed a varnish that could be used for electrical insulation. It is said that the elaborate woodwork on the first floor of 2 Beaver Street was handcrafted by a team of Italian woodworkers as a showcase for Todd’s business, the Sterling Varnish Company. Todd’s wife, Louise Slagle Todd was a socialite who held many parties, luncheons, and charitable events in the home.
