The Bow SUMMER 2019
An official publication for donors of Pi Beta Phi Foundation
A Message from Hallee Winnie, Executive Director of Your Foundation Dear friends, It’s always an honor, and now is a particularly exciting time to lead our Foundation. In just a few weeks, we will celebrate the largest fundraising campaign by a National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) organization and Pi Phi’s largest philanthropic endeavor ever. What a testament to the unending loyalty of this sisterhood! While we will have much to celebrate at convention, I’m most focused on the increased capacity you have helped to create with the SHINE THROUGH campaign. Growing the Foundation’s capacity was a clear goal of the campaign from the forefront. I’m truly in awe of the historic impact donors like you have made on our sisterhood. With your support, the Foundation has grown our staff to better care for and connect with our increasing number of donors, and we’ve intentionally recruited volunteer leaders with skills needed to ensure we’re making the most thoughtful decisions in stewardship of your investments. If you’ve read the last issue of The Arrow, you are familiar with the acronym VUCA, which describes the world we are living in today. VUCA stands for volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. Pi Beta Phi Leadership Development Officer and Georgia Alpha LISA MASTERS shared in The Arrow, “It’s critically important to understand the external environment in which we’re operating to make the best decisions and plan the best strategies for achieving our goals. In a VUCA environment, problems that appear familiar on the surface may require very different solutions than those that worked in the past.” Lisa offers three tips for navigating the VUCA world: taking care to maintain resilience, being inclusive and planning while remaining flexible. To this end, our Foundation — led by industry best practices — reassessed our needs and reviewed investment management firms over the last 18 months. After careful review, the Board of Trustees selected AMG National Trust as our new investment firm. AMG has a strong history of helping clients preserve and grow investment assets. And, aligning with our campaign goal, AMG builds the Foundation’s capacity in terms of stewardship, their commitment to the fraternal foundation community, and their proven dedication to clients’ success. Capacity, to me, is about preparing for what’s to come. Capacity is how our Foundation will help Pi Beta Phi survive and thrive in a VUCA world — it’s how our Foundation will ensure the future of our sisterhood. You have helped build our capacity and achieve incredible success with this campaign. We’re so very grateful. Thank you! In Pi Phi,
Hallee Winnie, Michigan Gamma Executive Director, Pi Beta Phi Foundation

A
Forever Legacy in Literacy
Pi Beta Phi Foundation is honored to announce the Barbara Beardmore Adams, Texas Alpha, Literacy Endowment established with a cash gift of nearly $1 million. After the death of the late Texas Alpha BARBARA BEARDMORE ADAMS’s husband Roy the process of administrating of their estate began. Roy and Barbara lived extraordinary lives. Roy’s work in the oil business took his family abroad, living in five countries, for a total of 23 years. Barbara had forged an interesting career as an early– generation computer programmer in the 1960s, working for Brown and Root, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Exxon Production Research, but put that on hold to care for her family as they were abroad. All the while, their deep commitment to their community through volunteerism and philanthropy made an impact wherever they went. Barbara began her studies at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Virginia, where she followed in the footsteps of her mother, Oklahoma Alpha BARBARA A. STUBBS BEARDMORE by pledging Pi Beta Phi. The same year Barbara was initiated, the college disbanded all fraternities. Barbara’s studies took her next to the University of Texas, where she affiliated with the Texas Alpha Chapter. After Barbara and Roy returned to their stateside home of Houston, Barbara resumed the volunteer work at Texas Children’s Hospital she had enjoyed before the couple’s travels. Barbara was a part of the Pi Phi team who helped establish the Pi Beta Phi Patient/Family Library at the hospital — a first of its kind. Barbara devoted more than 11,000 hours as a Texas Children’s Hospital volunteer, even serving as President and Financial Officer of the Volunteer Auxiliary. In 2012, she was named the hospital’s Volunteer of Barbara Beardmore Adams, Texas Alpha the Year. Barbara served on countless other volunteer boards and was a trustee on library boards in Houston and her home state of Oklahoma. Barbara was a dedicated Pi Phi. She regularly paid dues and contributed to the Foundation since its founding in 1990. Her passion for literacy was likely in great part due to Pi Phi. Barbara’s life is undoubtedly a demonstration of Pi Beta Phi values. With Pi Beta Phi Foundation named as beneficiaries of the Adams’ estate, their son took great care to learn more so that he could to ensure their gifts would align with his parents’ long-standing interests. The result of was the establishment a new endowment: The Barbara Beardmore Adams, Texas Alpha, Literacy Endowment. This fund will be managed in the same way as the Elizabeth Clarke Helmick Literacy Endowment and will support Pi Beta Phi’s Read > Lead > Achieve® literacy initiatives. As an endowment fund, earnings from the Adams’ gift will be used to make grants to Pi Phi programs, ensuring Barbara’s commitment to literacy will forever endure. Barbara had not notified the Foundation of her planned gift prior to her death, so we were not able to celebrate the incredible impact of her gift with her. If you have named Pi Beta Phi as a beneficiary of your estate, now — in the final days of the SHINE THROUGH campaign — is the time to share your plans with Pi Phi. This will enable us to say thank you and to ensure your gift is put to use as you intend. It’s often said that a planned gift is a tangible example of your values. By naming the Foundation as a beneficiary of her estate Barbara’s passion for literacy will carry on forevermore.

Local Impact Grants Reach Impactful Milestone: $500,000 As the link connecting Pi Beta Phi’s Read > Lead > Achieve® initiatives, financial support for The Literacy Fund and local literacy work done by clubs and chapters, the Local Impact Grants program gives Pi Phis an opportunity to advocate for literacy first-hand and strengthen the future of their own communities. During the fourth quarter of 2018, the program reached an important milestone. Since its launch in 2013, Pi Phis have provided more than half a million dollars in Local Impact Grants to nonprofit organizations across North America. As chapters and clubs fundraise for The Literacy Fund, the program gives them the opportunity to nominate 25% of their gifts to a local nonprofit with a program or focus on literacy. Pi Phi matches that 25%, dollar for dollar. “By nominating local organizations to receive grants, our members are growing and expanding Pi Phi’s impact in innovative ways, and truly moving the needle toward reducing the illiteracy issues so prevalent in our society,” said BETSY WEST MCCUNE, Missouri Alpha, Director of Operations and Programs.
Thank You to Our Retiring Trustees We extend our most sincere gratitude to Maryland Beta RENA RODEMAN THORSEN, Grand President PAULA PACE SHEPHERD, Texas Epsilon and FHC Board President LISA GAMEL SCOTT, Colorado Alpha as their service to the Foundation Board of Trustees comes to a close on June 30. Paula and Lisa have served the board as ex officio members through their respective leadership of the Fraternity and Fraternity Housing Corporation. “We are especially thankful to Rena, Paula and Lisa for their commitment and service to Pi Beta Phi during this critical time of growth for our sisterhood,” said Foundation Executive Director HALLEE WINNIE, Michigan Gamma. “Their expertise and leadership have been key strengths during their time on the board, and their strategic vision has positioned Pi Phi for an even brighter future. The impact Rena, Paula and Lisa have made will continue for generations of sisters to come.”
