Fall 2020

The official publication for donors and friends of Pi Beta Phi Foundation

A Message from Kathy Wager Sprague, President of Pi Beta Phi Foundation Board of Trustees Dear sisters, We all said yes to Pi Beta Phi once, when we accepted our bids. I have learned as a volunteer for Pi Beta Phi that the more you say yes, the more fulfilling this sisterhood becomes. Leading by example is one of the most pivotal ways to implement the change you want to see in the world, and this mindset has guided me through my entire volunteer relationship with Pi Beta Phi, including my current role as President of our Foundation. I am a person who believes in saying yes and taking the opportunities presented to me, which is exactly what led me to this opportunity to serve our organization. Over the course of five years as a volunteer member of the Foundation Development Committee, I

spent countless hours meeting with sisters and donors and hearing their shared visions for what we can do together. That experience brought a new appreciation for something I have known all along: Pi Beta Phi is not a culmination of things we’ve accomplished, it’s a sisterhood of women with whom we accomplished those things, side-by-side through it all. That mission has guided us for 153 years as a Fraternity and 30 years as your Foundation. Our mission guides us through all we face as a sisterhood. In recent months, the Fraternity and Foundation responded to the calls of members internationally to live our mission and core values by redefining our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in our sisterhood. Cultivating leadership skills and potential is a crucial focus of the programming and member development offered by Pi Phi. Improving our focus on diversity, equity and inclusion is a natural extension of the existing leadership initiatives which are near and dear to my heart. I want to help develop the leaders, scholars and philanthropists of tomorrow; this is my personal mission statement as a Pi Phi leader and why I do what I do. I want to be one set of hands in developing the next generation of women who will sustain this sisterhood and encourage each other for the next 153 years and more. As we know, building and sustaining that future happens by working together as a sisterhood, listening to one another and determining a path forward based on open dialogue and open hearts. I thank you all for what you’ve made possible through contributions to your Foundation and invite you to continue engaging in this dialogue with us as we all live out our values. In Pi Phi,

An Honor and a Blessing by BETHANY JOHNSON SOPER, Ohio Kappa

Two years before Pi Beta Phi established a chapter at the University of Cincinnati, I first participated in primary recruitment. At the time, I didn’t connect with or join any of the sororities, but in 2009 – when Pi Phi established a chapter on my campus – I knew I had found where I belong. I joined Pi Phi as a charter member of the Ohio Kappa Chapter. Being a founding member allowed me to leave a lasting legacy on the chapter and inspired me to continue these efforts long after my time as a collegian. Bethany with her husband Chris Soper.

A few months after graduation, I applied for dispensation to be on an Alumnae Advisory Committee (AAC) and was asked to serve as an Advisor for my chapter. I was honored to continue building our sisterhood at the University of Cincinnati. Since January 2012, I’ve enjoyed guiding the chapter through their toughest challenges and celebrating their greatest achievements.

Whether you make a gift to the Friendship Fund, support a sister in need or fund our leadership development programs, every gift ensures we are developing women who will be an honor and a blessing. Pi Beta Phi Foundation is a vehicle through which we can support our sisters.

My husband and I have always felt strongly about blessing others with what we have been given. Shortly after we married, we decided to create a charitable giving fund. Through my husband’s employer, we were able to match the amount in our fund to further support organizations important to us. When I saw Pi Beta Phi Foundation met the requirements for matching funds, we decided to provide regular gifts to the Foundation. The ability to support the Fraternity through matched funds has allowed us to be more intentional and generous with our gifts.

of my time through volunteering on an AAC and through my involvement with a local alumnae club. Now that I’m able to financially invest in our sisterhood, I know I am helping to ensure the work of our Fraternity continues for years to come. Pi Phi has given me more than I ever could have dreamed when I was a collegiate member. Because of my membership in Pi Beta Phi, I made lifelong friendships, wonderful memories and found a community of women I’m proud to say are an honor and a blessing.

Matching Gifts Corporate philanthropy programs are readily available resources that can maximize the power of a gift to your Foundation. Check with your company's human resources office to see if they offer gift matching. If your employer does offer this program, your human resources department should provide you with a matching gift form to include with your gift or instructions for electronic submission.
