The official publication for donors and friends of Pi Beta Phi Foundation
A Message from Leadership Dear Sisters,
Over the last year and a half, I’ve been awestruck by the steadfast support of my sisters and friends. Gratitude doesn’t come close to encapsulating how I feel about each and every person who supported our Foundation at such a difficult, unprecedented time. It’s my opinion that if you believe in what you’re doing, you stay the course and see those endeavors through. As donors to Pi Beta Phi Foundation, each of you continually demonstrates your steadfast belief in our sisterhood and shows how much you value the work of our Foundation to support our sisters and communities. I, too, believe in Pi Beta Phi. I believe in the strength and relevance of both our sisterhood and our Foundation as beacons of Sincere Friendship, as we continue to support sisters in their time of need, ensure access to education, empower women leaders and champion literacy initiatives. Every Foundation donor makes an immense difference in the lives of those supported by our efforts, and the level of commitment demonstrated over the past year shows our sisterhood’s priorities have remained true. I’ve had the privilege to speak with many of you in my role as Vice President Development for our Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and I’ve heard firsthand the concerns and priorities of our donors and friends. You want to see the impact made through what you give. You want Pi Phi to remain committed to furthering literacy efforts and fostering leadership development. You want to know where the support is needed and how we can make a real difference, together. Transparency is an essential aspect of any philanthropic organization, and as a Foundation supported by our sisterhood, we find it imperative that you understand and feel confident in the operations of your Foundation. To that end, we've included a breakdown of the power and path of your dollars at work on page 10. Pi Phis generously supported our Foundation through Pi Phi Giving Day and Halo Heaven — helping to exceed those fundraising

Looking After the Pi Phi Sisterhood With each sister welcomed into Pi Beta Phi, there is shared commitment to take care of one another. Members and friends around the world look after the Pi Phi sisterhood in many ways – volunteering their time, offering their talents and gifting their treasure. Throughout her time in Pi Phi, Indiana Beta SUSAN CRANE KYLE has continuously responded to the needs of our sisterhood. Through her generosity, Susan has touched countless facets of the Pi Phi member experience — truly helping to ensure the future of our sisterhood. Susan’s annual support to Pi Beta Phi stretches back to 1981, nine years before the establishment of Pi Beta Phi Foundation. Even then, Susan understood the significance of the Fraternity’s work. “I think I first decided to give because of the good work our Fraternity was doing through all our programs,” she says. “And the fact that our sisterhood – and supporting our sisterhood – was so important to me.” Over the years, Susan has been an embodiment of the loyalty and Lifelong Commitment at the heart of Pi Beta Phi and

Grants supported 17 Pi Phis facing unexpected hardships such as natural disasters, serious illnesses, loss of immediate family members, job elimination and emergencies related to the ongoing pandemic. For members like Ohio Alpha MELISSA KILBANE, who received an Emma Harper Turner Fund grant during the previous fiscal year, the support exemplifies the strength of Pi Phi sisterhood and values in action. “With family members and myself being out of work [due to COVID-19], I was worried about how I was going to continue studying at Ohio University,” Melissa said. “I’m extremely grateful for every single donor

Pi Beta Phi Foundation 2020-2021 Annual Report While the turbulence of the past fiscal year brought significant changes in giving to our Foundation, we invested $772,103 in Fraternity programs and grants because of your generosity. With every gift, you demonstrated how steadfastly you believe in Pi Beta Phi and in every member who shares our sisterhood. Our annual revenues and expenses differed from previous fiscal years due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the leadership of Foundation staff and the Foundation Board of Trustees, resources were prioritized to maintain existing programs to support Pi Phis and our communities. The largest expense reduction was managed through not filling staff vacancies and by incurring no travel or catering expenses by suspending in-person events and travel with COVID-19 considerations. The variance in our financial landscape demonstrates exactly why support to our Foundation — especially gifts to the Friendship Fund — is so critical. Unrestricted gifts ensure our Foundation can support Pi Phi's areas of greatest need, from funding member programs to providing the resources needed to sustain our sisterhood in any circumstance. In a year unlike any other, your generosity and commitment helped us continue to fulfill the promise we make to every Pi Phi sister.

A cherished, committed member of our sisterhood, ADRIENNE HISCOX MITCHELL, Kansas Alpha and past
Grand Council member and Foundation Board of Trustees President, left a bequest to Pi Beta Phi Foundation which we received after her passing during this fiscal year. A loyal Pi Phi and Foundation donor, Adrienne left a detailed designation in her estate that her gift benefit a designated endowed scholarship as well as the Friendship Fund. We believe Adrienne would have been so pleased to offer such critical support to our sisters and sisterhood during this unexpected year and we're immensely grateful for the support offered by a steadfast supporter of our sisterhood. “Friendship” was the theme of her tenure, and she was personification of the word. Working in the present, but always with an eye to what lay ahead, Jean said, “I am confident that we are up to the challenge of whatever the future holds for us. faced with issues of unprecedented themes: coed fraternities, injury and alcohol liability, drug abuse and hazing. Universities began the practice of issuing relationship statements, which at times infringed upon the rights of members, chapters or the Fraternity. Jean oversaw the development of alcohol and drug awareness programs; new chapter programs were launched, and a firm stand was taken against hazing practices. Jean’s passion for ending hazing led to the Fraternity issuing first of its kind anti-hazing standards in 1985. Under her guidance, the Fraternity began its relationship with legal counsel ManleyBurke leading to a critical partnership which has benefited the Fraternity and greater fraternal industry in the decades since.

trends and supervised the new chapter extension program, among other responsibilities. During this period, the Fraternity established seven new chapters on top of the eight new chapters which were installed during her time as Grand President.
In 1985, Jean expanded her service to the Panhellenic community as National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) Delegate, Treasurer, Secretary and Chair. From 1995-1997, as Chair of the Conference, Jean led the 26 member groups with enthusiasm and vision for the future. Through her work, Jean continued her mission to abolish hazing. In addition, Jean led the development of values-based drug programming focusing on risk management with assistance from the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and other Drug Prevention and supporting the implementation of substance-free housing at colleges and universities through participation in an NPC/NIC Joint Commission. Jean closely worked with the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) to address hazing, develop risk management programming and empower all members to bring positive recognition to the fraternity and sorority community. Jean was a driving force in the establishment of the NPC Foundation’s Centennial Endowment in fall 1999 to honor the 100th anniversary of NPC in 2002. Under her leadership and guidance as President of the NPC Foundation from 1999–2003, the NPC Foundation successfully reached their goals of 100% participation from all NPC member groups and a financial goal of $750,000. Throughout her lifetime of service to the fraternity and sorority community, Jean has been honored numerous times. In 1996, she received the NIC Gold Medal—the highest honor the NIC bestows—for demonstrating her lifelong commitment to volunteer and professional service to fraternities. Jean was named Pi Beta Phi Panhellenic Woman of the Year in 1997, for her remarkable dedication to the Fraternity and to the fraternity and sorority community as a whole. Then, in 1998, the College Fraternity Editors Association (CFEA) proudly recognized Jean as the winner of CFEA’s most prestigious honor, the Evin C. Varner Award for performing extraordinary fraternal service and achieving peer respect

through the spirit of assistance and kindness. At the 2003 Convention in Anaheim, California, past Grand President SARAH “SIS” MULLIS presented Jean the title Grand
President Emerita, an honor bestowed in recognition of exemplary service to the Fraternity. Because of Jean’s visionary leadership, the Fraternity began awarding the Jean Wirths Scott Leadership Award for Outstanding Change Leadership Award in 1987, recognizing a member who has implemented changes and improvements in the chapter or the local Collegiate Panhellenic Council. Jean's deep care for the fraternity and sorority community and the individuals involved made her an exemplary leader. Touching lives through the years of servant leadership and enriching all who knew and worked with her made her a true friend. Jean is a legend within Pi Beta Phi and the greater fraternity fraternal community. She will be dearly missed. If you would like to honor Jean’s legacy, memorial gifts may be made to the Friendship Fund or the Past Grand Presidents Memorial Graduate Fellowship Fund at Pi Beta Phi Foundation.

Upcoming Halo Happenings In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our Foundation transitioned the Halo Happenings events to virtual coffee-chat style events. Plans are underway to host virtual and in-person events during the 2021-2022 year focusing on alumnae engagement opportunities while balancing safely meeting in person. Whether held in-person or virtually, Halo Happenings provide our members the opportunity to gather together, hear updates from Pi Phi leaders and learn more about the ways we're making a difference for our sisterhood. Upcoming event details will be announced later this fall at pibetaphi.org/halohappenings.

Pi Beta Phi Honored for Foundation's Literacy Crisis Grant As schools closed at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pi Beta Phi leaders supported the emergency response efforts of our literacy partners at First Book® with a special crisis grant from our Foundation totaling $480,000. Our investment helped First Book distribute more than seven million books. In recognition of this support, Pi Phi was honored in April 2020 within the fraternal industry with the Foundation for Fraternal Excellence Organization Award of Distinction for Best Use of a Foundation Grant. This grant was made possible through the generosity of Pi Phi chapters, alumnae clubs and donors like you. Over the years, your gifts to The Literacy Fund provided a reserve of resources that positioned us to respond when help was needed most.
