A Message from Leadership
Dear Sisters and friends, I made my first gift to Pi Beta Phi in 1988. (For those of you doing the math, that’s prior to the creation of our Foundation and years before our current collegians were born.) Although my gift was small—I think it was $10—I understood its true value. It represented a “yes” to our sisterhood. With my contribution, I believed I could make a difference. My gift mattered to Pi Phi. I mattered to Pi Phi. That same feeling is why I continue to say “yes” through my gifts and service to Pi Phi as a volunteer. My loyalty to this sisterhood, and my confidence in what we do, are the keys to my ongoing support. I believe my contributions matter. As you'll read in the pages that follow, every gift to our Foundation matters. The power of your support is reflected in the perseverance of the Pi Phis who receive Foundation scholarships, the inspiration of the learners who discover a love of reading, the spirit of the chapter and alumnae club officers who realize their capacity to lead and the gratitude of the sisters who receive emergency assistance grants. With your gifts, you’ve told every person whose life we’ve impacted that you believe they matter, too. Yet our collective accomplishments during the past year are only half the story. While recognizing the immediate impact of Foundation support is important, it’s also essential to keep our eyes on the horizon. Your gifts help us find a balance between caring for Pi Phi’s needs today and planning for what’s to come—partnering with our donors and learning more about their philanthropic passions and priorities, creating relationships now that will yield loyalty and generosity long into the future. Your support also helps us to envision just how bright that future can be, to dare to imagine what we could achieve if more sisters and friends said “yes.” With more than 200,000 living members, what could we do if every Pi Phi honored their Lifelong Commitment by giving back? How many more collegians and alumnae could we support with scholarships? What innovative leadership development programs could we create? How many more lives and communities could we touch? While our impact today is powerful, our potential impact is endless. Ultimately, our Foundation’s mission is to ensure Pi Phi’s longevity—to work for the benefit of our beloved Fraternity, to bring us ever closer to reaching our potential impact. And with your ongoing support, we can create a bright future for our sisterhood and for every member. I hope you’ll join me in continuing to say “yes” to Pi Phi, in any way you can. Your commitment matters, your gifts matter, and you matter to Pi Phi—now and always.

Creating a Bright Future How Your Support Impacts Our Members and Communities Pi Beta Phi shines because of the dedicated sisters and friends who give of themselves to better our organization, our communities and one another. Creating a bright future for every Pi Phi requires the engagement and steadfast support of all members of our sisterhood. As Pi Phis, there is nothing we can’t accomplish when working together, and that shines through in the work made possible through loyal supporters of Pi Beta Phi Foundation. As we set the course for a new biennium, opportunities and challenges lie ahead. To best prepare to meet them, it’s helpful to look back on what we’ve done together over the last fiscal year. Let this serve as an inspiration and call to action for the days to come. Thank you for your continued support and the impacts you’ve made across these programmatic areas over the past year.
LEADERSHIP Pi Beta Phi calls on each member to be a Friend and Leader for Life. With leadership development at the forefront of our organization, so are opportunities for our members to continually hone these skills throughout their lives. These opportunities range from serving on a Chapter Leadership Team, Alumnae Advisory Committee (AAC), Chapter House Corporation or as an international officer to attending events throughout the year which are made possible through Foundation donors.

SCHOLARSHIPS Pi Phi’s core value of Personal and Intellectual Growth serves as a reminder of what brings our sisters together: the pursuit of higher education. Whether for collegians seeking undergraduate degrees or alumnae attending graduate or continuing education programs, scholarships from Pi Beta Phi Foundation empower our sisters to reach their full potential with fewer worries of how to pay for it. Local Pi Phi volunteers and friends helped more than 100 recipient groups claim more than 30,000 books and literacy-related school supplies for schools and programs in the communities. Gifts to The Literacy Fund at Pi Beta Phi Foundation are critical to the success of Pi Phi’s literacy initiatives—providing full financial support for all Read > Lead > Achieve® programs, including FDS Signature Events. Courtney Etherington, an educator in the Torrance Unified School District in Torrance, California, shared her appreciation and her plans for how to get the books into the hands of as many students as possible. "I am so grateful to have attended the wonderful book event in Long Beach,” Courtney told us. “Some books went toward our summer reading program for grades 1-4 where students can come select books of their choice. Kindergarten teachers in my school got to put together a book bag for read alouds with their classes. We also restocked our reading room, which is separate from the library, where some of the books will go. Students come during their lunch, recess or with their teacher during the school day. Other books will be put in our library or in our middle school library. Thank you so much!" Beyond Fraternity Day of Service, Pi Phis continue to impact their communities every day of the year through programming

EMMA HARPER TURNER FUND GRANTS True sisterhood means showing up for each other in the good times and the challenging times alike. Often, members aren’t able to foresee the trials and tribulations that lie ahead; that’s where the care and compassion shown by donors to the Emma Harper Turner Fund can make all the difference. The emergency grants made possible by this program provide a necessary lifeline to alumnae and collegians impacted by financial crises created by illness, natural disasters, job loss or other unforeseen circumstances. In the last fiscal year, grants totaling $39,725 were given to 11 Pi Phis, extending a caring hand to sisters facing unique challenges. After a fire destroyed her home, Iowa Beta BRITTANY ARMSTRONG DECKER says the support she felt—from friends, family, Pi Phi sisters and total strangers—gave her the hope to keep moving forward. As she shared in a previous issue of The Bow, losing everything she had in less than 30 minutes was a traumatic experience, and the effects lasted much longer than the incident itself. In the moments when Brittany, her husband Ryan and their son William needed it most, sisters and friends—most of whom she will never know—provided the support they needed to keep moving forward. “All the help, assistance and thoughts from other people are what give me hope,” she says. “We’ve heard many times that we’re so strong for getting through this, but it doesn’t feel that way. I didn’t have a choice; I had to push on. One of the ways we were able to do that is with all the people offering us love, care and anything else we needed. When others believe in you and offer you help, it makes everything a lot easier.”
