The Bow SPRING 2019
An official publication for donors of Pi Beta Phi Foundation
A Message from Kate Blatherwick Pickert, Pi Beta Phi Foundation President Dear Sisters and Pi Phi Friends, As we plan for the conclusion of Pi Phi’s historic SHINE THROUGH campaign, we believe success is about more than reaching our fundraising goal. It’s a chance to show and reaffirm the sisterhood bonds we hold so dear. Full participation from our volunteer leadership and our Pi Phi Headquarters staff illustrates the importance of this effort. I am pleased to share the following story of Julie Wisbrock, Pi Phi’s Senior Director of Membership, and her family. Through her shining example, Julie is helping us reach our goals to SHINE THROUGH for future generations. In Pi Phi, Kate Blatherwick Pickert, Kansas Alpha
Supporting the Chapter Experience is a Family Affair for the Wisbrocks When Julie Wisbrock joined Alpha Chi Omega at the University of Kansas in 1995, she never thought some 20 years later she would feel passionately about financially supporting another women’s fraternity — Pi Beta Phi. Julie is Pi Phi’s Senior Director of Membership, working at Pi Beta Phi Headquarters for more than six years. When she recalls her experiences with Alpha Chi Omega, she lights up describing the year she spent as a Leadership Development Consultant (LDC) and how it shaped her future in more ways than one. “My LDC experience was great because it’s how I met my husband, Chris, who was an LDC for Delta Tau Delta and because we both learned first-hand the amount of resources it takes to successfully run a fraternal organization,” said Julie. As a result, both of them have been actively involved in and have financially supported their respective organizations since early in their relationship. And, due to Julie’s role at Headquarters and her belief in the Fraternity’s mission, they also give to Pi Beta Phi. She personally understands how each financial gift to Pi Phi directly impacts her team’s ability to build and deliver a premier experience for our members.
Chris, Julie, Emma and Kate Wisbrock
The Wisbrocks usually make one-time gifts to Pi Phi throughout the year at events such as Pi Phi Giving Day and Founders’ Day, and Julie donates in honor of her team members during the holidays. But what lit a spark for them to increase their giving was the desire to contribute to the SHINE THROUGH campaign. They discussed what they could do and committed to a $2,500 pledge. And, because Chris is included on the donation, his employer will match the gift 100 percent, turning $2,500 into $5,000! “The campaign is so exciting, and it’s at such a critical time for Pi Phi and the industry overall,” explains Julie. “With the world INSIDE THIS ISSUE questioning the value of Greek-letter organizations, Chris and I see the need more Not My Chapter, But Still My than ever to put forth resources to ensure Pi Phi and similar organizations endure.” The couple has two young daughters, and they want the girls to have the opportunity to decide whether to join a women’s fraternity when they’re in college. “We want them to know what it’s like to have a sorority to come home to if they choose,” Julie said. “Although I’m not a Pi Beta Phi member, Pi Phi is my home just as much as Alpha Chi because we’re friends, we work together and we share a common goal.”

Not My Chapter, But Still My Responsibility Many Pi Phis remain connected to our sisterhood through loyal volunteer and financial support of their own chapters. Yet for some sisters, supporting a chapter other than their own is an impactful way to embody friendship, leadership and lifelong commitment. Foundation donor ROBERTA “BOBBIE” BLISS PITTMAN, Wisconsin Beta, established a dedicated fund for the California Mu Chapter to ensure generations of women would continue to enjoy the same opportunities and experiences Pi Phi gave her. Bobbie joined the Wisconsin Beta Chapter of Pi Beta Phi as a junior after transferring to Beloit College from the University of Illinois. Despite serving the chapter as Treasurer, she remembers no alumnae presence demonstrating involvement after graduation. “I never saw an Alumnae Advisory Committee (AAC) member — at all,” she recalls. “I didn’t know a thing about the Pi Phi alumna experience, so I completely wrote it off.” In 1965, shortly after her work at IBM brought her to Phoenix, the Camelback Alumnae Club called her to help with the installation of the Arizona Beta Chapter at Arizona State University. “It never occurred to me to join an alumnae club, but I went because they called and asked me to do something,” she says with a laugh. As Bobbie connected with other Pi Phis in the area, she quickly gained an appreciation for alumnae involvement. The connection sustained her through frequent moves during her husband’s years as a naval officer. When the Pittmans finally settled in California in the early 1980s, Bobbie promptly joined the Ventura County Alumnae Club and served as Treasurer. She was asked to serve on the Installation Committee when the California Mu Chapter at Pepperdine University was established in 1996 and ultimately became the chapter’s AAC Financial Advisor. Determined to model alumnae commitment for the undergraduate members, Bobbie’s close involvement
with California Mu’s collegians and finances opened her eyes to a growing problem. “Women in our chapter often couldn’t afford to stay in school and stay in Pi Phi,” she says. “As the chapter’s financial advisor, I knew these women and saw their struggles firsthand. We had such a strong chapter, and I didn’t want to see women leave because of something that could be prevented.” After the death of her husband in 2015, Bobbie chose to establish the Bobbie Bliss Pittman Undergraduate Scholarship Fund at Pi Beta Phi Foundation. The needbased award gives first preference to a California Mu collegian, and is the chapter’s only designated fund. “I was in the position to make a difference, and thought, ‘why wouldn’t I do this?’” she says. “I want to keep the chapter strong, and I want to help our women be the best they can be.” Bobbie sees a clear connection between her gift and the overall future of Pi Phi. “Without our collegians, our sisterhood has no future,” she says emphatically. “We need more scholarships to support the women in our chapters. If our members are resigning because of finances, we could be losing a future Grand Council member or lifelong volunteer.”

Maximize Your Impact
Corporate philanthropy programs are readily available — but often overlooked — resources that can maximize the power of your gift. Tennessee Gamma KELLEY GOLDEN was able to double her SHINE THROUGH commitment thanks to a dollar-for-dollar match from her employer. Below she shares some advice on putting matching gifts to work for Pi Phi. 1. Talk with your Human Resources department to see what your company offers. Get specifics on gift matching policies, processes and time frames. “The first and most important step is to ask. There are many companies that support their employees’ efforts to make a difference. Some match at a percentage; others match dollar-for-dollar. But every dollar counts.” 2. Ask about non-traditional matching programs. “Microsoft matches my volunteer hours for Pi Phi with a gift as well as my financial contributions. Some companies allow employees to nominate grants from a community fund or foundation.” 3. Consider your spouse or partner’s employer match. “Remember to look at matching policies at both of your employers. You could potentially triple your initial gift!” 4. Remember that every gift makes a difference. “Maybe you’re in a strong financial position, or maybe your money is tied up in child care, home renovations or student loans. Whether you give $25 or $25,000, securing a match for your gift increases your impact and makes truly transformative gifts possible.” Pi Beta Phi Foundation’s staff members are happy to help you seek options to maximize your impact on our sisterhood! Please email COURTNEY HAMMOCK, Colorado Epsilon, at chammock@pibetaphi.org for assistance. The SHINE THROUGH campaign is set to conclude at Convention 2019 with a monumental celebration! We’re excited to share the success of this historic $28M campaign to sustain our sisterhood. Only a few months remain to be part of Pi Phi’s largest-ever philanthropic endeavor. Now is the time to show your unending loyalty and create endless impact for Pi Beta Phi. We’re inspired by the strong support our sisterhood has shown for our campaign aspirations: leadership, scholarships, literacy, housing and operational resources. The campaign offers a place for every Pi Phi passion, and we celebrate gifts supporting any aspiration to help reach or surpass our goals. In the final months of the campaign, we’re highlighting a few specific giving opportunities that will help build the operational resources Pi Phi needs now. Will you help Pi Phi reach all of our SHINE THROUGH goals to ensure the future of our sisterhood? OPERATIONAL RESOURCES

Halo Highlights College Weekend
More than 700 Pi Phi leaders across North America converged on St. Louis for College Weekend 2019. This premier Fraternity leadership experience is designed to educate chapter leaders and advisors on best practices in a variety of topics, focusing on specific areas of chapter operations. Foundation representatives discussed the impact our programs and funding have on the Pi Phi experience. Chapter giving was celebrated, recognizing both the Top 10 chapters in 2018 and the collective funds raised – a record-breaking year, with a total of $1,583,670.06 given by our chapters! Many attendees also answered the call to join our monumental SHINE THROUGH campaign and support Pi Phi Giving Day, contributing more than $3,600 for the Friendship Fund.
Stand Up to Harvard
In Fall 2018, Harvard University began to enforce its policy imposing sanctions against students who belong to single-sex social organizations, including sororities and fraternities, stripping members of the opportunity to fully participate in other campus organizations. Because of Harvard’s sanctions, nearly all Harvard sorority chapters have closed. While Pi Beta Phi does not have a chapter at Harvard, we believe students have the right to shape their own futures. We feel that a threat, such as this, to any fraternal organization is a threat to the future of our sisterhood. Pi Phi is proud to join our friends and #standuptoharvard. Learn how you can support this effort at www.standuptoharvard.com.
Fraternity Day of Service
Hundreds of Pi Beta Phi members, friends and family distributed thousands of books to children in Phoenix, Arizona; Tucson, Arizona; Omaha, Nebraska and Indianapolis, Indiana as part of Pi Phi’s Fraternity Day of Service. Over the weekend of March 1-2, Pi Beta Phi put new books in the hands of 80,000 children. Pi Phi’s Fraternity Day of Service Signature Events are fully funded through donor support of Pi Beta Phi Foundation. Above: Collegiate representatives from the 2018 Top 10 chapters for giving.
Proposed Officer Structure Legislation
Pi Beta Phi recognizes the need to evolve and adapt to better meet the needs of our members and to ensure the Fraternity’s legacy lives on for the next 150 years. As a result, legislation proposing a new officer leadership structure will be presented at Convention 2019. The proposed collegiate structure creates more opportunities for leadership at the chapter level, and chapter officers will have more opportunities to coach each other and collaborate as a team. On the chapter support side of the international officer structure, the proposal provides simplicity and consistency with the collegiate structure. Learn more by visiting www.pibetaphi.org/officerstructure.
