The summer of 2020 was more eventful that any other in recent history. So while you plan the best method to gather and dispose of the leaves that are now covering the lawn, take some time to peruse the contents of this latest edition of Picayune Living. taking up roller skating. Many of you may have fond memories of lacing up a pair of skates as a child before either hitting the rink or just doing a few laps around the neighborhood. But roller skating is also a great way to keep the heart pumping and get a bit of exercise into adulthood. If a bit of serenity is what you seek after a long day of work, read about a local man who can teach you about the joys of creating water features in your landscape. Waterfalls and ponds can bring wildlife, joy and calm to your world with even minimal effort. For those musicians, be sure to read our feature about a local man who has taken up the hobby of building custom electric guitars. This labor of love continues to grow as he utilizes his multitude of skills to create one of a kind pieces of art that also produce music. And finally, check out our feature of a local farm that is working to bring back the joys of fall themed activities, including the petting zoo experience.

Finding tranquility in the beauty of the outdoors

The bleats of ducks and geese filled the air as Tyler Fagan put the finishing touches on his passion project, Fagan Farms. Inspired by a joking comment from a friend, Fagan has turned his passion for animals and adventure into a massive compound where visitors of all ages will be able to visit and enjoy the great outdoors. A petting zoo, playground, mining station, obstacle course and inflatable slides are just some of the activities that are going to be available to visitors when Fagan Farms opens Oct. 3. However, this newfound business isn’t about money for Fagan, it’s about enriching the lives of others. Spending time in nature can have 8 FALL 2020 8 FALL 2020

numerous positive affects and Fagan said the hours outside can lead to a healthier lifestyle. “I just feel like it’s always more healthy to be outside. Virus or no virus, I feel like the best thing you can do for yourself is to be active and be outside. There’s so much to take in and enjoy. You’re spending ten hours a day five days a week in an office, why do you want to sit in your house?” Fagan said. Being outdoors can also lead to new and fun experiences that can’t be replicated while stuck in the house. New hobbies and interests can be found while enjoying nature’s calming environment, exposing people to new opportunities for growth.

“I think it’s important just because you never know what your passion may be. You may be 35-years-old and just find it. You never know what the future holds and if you don’t get out and experience it, you’re pretty much closing a door that could’ve been open,” Fagan said. Escaping from the hustle and bustle of city life and finding a spot in nature allows for a disconnect that isn’t always possible when living in a metropolitan area. Cellphones, TVs, radios and social media means there’s a constant bombardment of information and distractions that can affect a person’s perspective in a negative way. However, out in the wild, those things don’t matter anymore and people are able to come together as humans and interact with one another. “I feel like with all the hate in the world, when you’re around an atmosphere like this it doesn’t come to mind. You don’t think about negative news, all the hate. It all goes away and that’s a positive aspect,” Fagan said. Familial bonds, friendships and relationships can all benefit

from shared time in the outdoors. Nature can mend broken pasts and provide hope for a better future as people lose themselves in the serenity of the wilderness. “I think you’re just in a natural environment to begin with and so there’s nothing being forced. There’s no negative energy,” Fagan said. The positive aspects of nature aren’t lost on Fagan and that’s what he hopes to provide to people who decide to visit Fagan Farms after it opens. There are so many benefits to be gained from spending more time outside Fagan said that if more people were to be introspective during their trips into the wilderness they’d learn more about themselves. “I don’t know what’s going on in the outside world. I don’t know what’s going on with the election or anything other than what happens here, and I feel like that’s something a lot of people need to get back to, is to just worry about what’s happening there. Not everywhere around you,” Fagan said. PICAYUNELIVING.COM 9 PICAYUNELIVING.COM 9

Rolling into fitness and fun

Whether you’re old or young, outside or indoors, rollerskating can be an easy way to find an enjoyable form of exercise while also strengthening relationships with people you care about. Rollerskating can serve as escape, a way to forget about the world’s problems, if only for an hour or two. It’s a simple set of movements that not only serves as a form of transportation from one point to another, but is also an aerobic workout. It’s not as monotonous or slow paced as running, or as stationary as lifting weights; instead, rollerskating can help people find a happy medium. “If I’m having a bad day or something is in my head, for my lunch time I’ll skate down the street and then my head is clear. I’ve learned that’s my therapy because I can’t think about everything else,” local rollerskater Jessica Tebo said. The American version of roller skates, the model with the wheels side by side, was invented in 1863, 12 FALL 2020 12 FALL 2020

and has continued entertaining citizens around the globe ever since. Beginners can start at their own pace and institutions such as the Skate Station in Carriere can serve as a place where families can embark on their rollerskating journey together as a unit while in the comfort of an indoor venue. Debbie Weaver and her husband decided to build the Skate Station in 1998 as a way to give back to local families. Now open for over 20 years, the rink has seen generations of community pass through its doors while using rollerskating as a way to connect. “It’s a nice, physical activity so they can get off the couch, get out and be active together. We’ve been here so long now that young parents will bring their children out and the parents grew up coming to our rink as teenagers,” Weaver said. A big positive of rollerskating is its accessibility.

New skaters can be of any age, and a set of roller-skates can be found in numerous shops or online stores. It’s a fun form of exercise and entertainment that community members of any age can enjoy, and that means bonds can be strengthened and relationships formed between people who are decades apart in age. “It’s kind of like doing an aerobic class. You have to focus on what you’re doing, so you forget about all the stuff you were doing during the day. Because you can turn on music and be silly and groovy with it, I wish more adults got back to that,” local skater Lori Colgin said. Rollerskating can be enjoyable on its own, but to do it with friends or family members can improve the experience.

Weaver said bringing families together and watching them grow stronger over time as a result of rollerskating is a rewarding experience, and an experience she hopes to continue to have in the coming years. “The family is the most important structure, so it encourages good fun activities to do together to build stronger bonds with each other,” Weaver said. It’s the adaptability of rollerskating as a whole that is so enticing and rewarding for those who do it. “It’s something you can do in a group or do on your own. You don’t have to ask someone to join you. Its still music, still moving the body and you’re focusing on something other than your own problems,” Colgin said. Peaceful Yards Landscaping is a useful tool that can create beautiful scenery, and can especially create a tranquil place to enjoy at home. All it takes to bring the tranquility of water into a yard is a garden hose, according to Ted Flaskas. Flaskas works with water professionally—he helps people redesign their yards and designs water features into existing landscaping. He also studied marine biology and owned aquarium shops for 20 years. His own yard features a three-sided waterfall surrounded by blossoming plants, all under the shade of a large palm. Joie de vivre, society garlic, azaleas and miniature roses grow around the small waterfall. In the spring the blossoming plants form a solid wall of color, he said, then repeat bloom throughout summer. Creating a peaceful outdoor space at home can provide an escape from the hectic world. “You can be there in the backyard picking the flowers you planted, picking the fruit you planted and seeing the true magnificence of everything.” Flaskas said he’s heard of people being able to lower their blood pressure by adding a peaceful outdoor space to their home where they can spend time relaxing. “Almost every back yard we do, or front yard, heals somebody mentally or physically in one way or another or helps them to attain healing themselves,” said Flaskas.

A well placed reflecting pool can help cool a patio or home. A pond can become a home for fish and frogs, creating a relaxing activity or providing ambient sounds on a cool autumn evening. A natural swimming pool with a wetland filtration system can give hours of fun, while manmade waterfalls can provide a soothing sensory experience. “I have people that have their little grandkids over and they let them fish. They put little sunfish in there and they fish right in their backyard,” said Flaskas. Rocks help turn a waterfall into a miniature mountain. “When you get up in the mountains, it looks like this, so now you’re bringing a piece of the mountain, the Ozarks, back to your home so you can remember what you did while you were there,” said Flaskas. For a manmade pond or stream, placement is important. Sometimes there are too many trees, roots or underground utilities for an in ground water feature. In those instances creating an above ground feature is still an option. If a pond is placed under trees, there will be the need to remove the leaves from the pond during the fall. If a pond gets too much sun, it can encourage more algae growth. Roots of larger plants can absorb nutrients that would cause algae to grow more quickly. Water lilies can shade the water and shelter fish. A pond covered in water lilies can be found just

behind Flaskas’ waterfall. The flowers bloom in the morning, then close by late afternoon. Once a pond has naturalized, it no longer looks manmade. “The thing with water lilies is, you’ve got to love them because eventually they’ll take up a very good portion of the pond,” he said. His pond has a small dock where a little boat can be tied up. A family of ducks lives at the pond, and occasionally geese come to stay. “You know it’s a good pond for food, and naturally balanced, when the wildlife comes in,” said Flaskas. Flaskas places water features so that everything slopes away from them to prevent other water from running into them. Drainage is an important consideration. A poorly placed pond could be polluted by water runoff or a natural bottomed pond dug in the wrong kind of clay could leak, negating any attempts to hold water. Along with practical considerations, placement affects the visual appeal of a water feature. Flaskas likes to have waterfalls or ponds that are visible from many angles, so they can be seen and enjoyed from the porch or house window. He also tries to place water features so the setting sun can reflected off it. “An artist would paint in light where we may take it for granted, but they’ll enhance and know where light should be, and they’ll paint it into a painting. I do the same thing with the land. The sun at certain times of day will make that water just look like diamonds.”

Along with sparkling reflections, water provides an auditory experience. “As you walk around it, there’s always another vantage point and a different sound, so you get several gifts from it,” Flaskas said as he walked around his waterfall. Behind his home, Flaskas has another pond and waterfall next to a patio dining set, with a Jacuzzi tub nearby. “I like the sun to set behind the pond, so you sit at the table at night and you can have your dinner and watch the sun go down and you can listen to the music from in the house and the waterfall. It erases everything,” said Flaskas. Outdoor art is another way to turn a yard into an oasis. A yard can be embellished with a whimsical sculpture with water running down it, or instead of a garden, blooms can be brought in with a brightly painted mural along a fence. Flaskas’ partner, Lori Felix, is visual artist. She said she appreciates the low maintenance aspect of a mural garden. The possible additions to a yard can reach as far as the imagination, said Flaskas, from fire rings to video screens to an outdoor kitchen. However, improvements to outdoor spaces do not have to be expensive or large. Even a small fountain with distilled water can bring calm.

Ellis Field

20 FALL 2020 20 FALL 2020

HOME SWEET HOME By J EREM Y PI T TA RI

Pearl River County is known for its beautiful rural nature, resulting in areas that have large tracts of land with custom built homes. One piece of land fits that very description, with the added aspect that it has served as a home to one resident who has a love of flying and his wife. As visitors drive up to the property they are greeted by a custom metal sign with an airplane in the center flanked by the words “Ellis Field.” Instantly visitors are greeted by a carefully planted line of oaks, allegedly planted as seedlings by the previous owner when he was 12-years-old. Troy and Suzanne Ellis now call this piece of property home. The couple purchased part of that property back in 2011, and began building on the land in 2013. Troy, who is an avid private pilot, said he became aware of the property from his old flight instructor. At the time the only structure on it was a large work shed, which included space for a small plane to keep it out of the elements. Initially, Troy wanted to tear the shed down after taking ownership, but Suzanne convinced him to remodel the structure into an apartment, which the couple would wind up living in for four years while they built their retirement home further down the gravel drive. While the home, which was completed in 2017, is the centerpiece of the property, the 900 square foot apartment features a number of amenities in its renovated state. Inside is a cozy kitchen, loft, full bathroom and a large window in the bedroom/livingroom that looks out into the large field that doubles as a runway for Troy’s three small engine powered aircraft. Suzanne and Troy said the apartment currently serves as a place for friends and family to stay. Down the long gravel road is the main home, a 2,000 square foot structure featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large open kitchen with quartz countertops that looks out into the living room with a cathedral ceiling. Instead of a yawn inspiring dining table, the couple opted for a restaurant style booth that was modified with a butcher block style top. The living room also features a propane powered fireplace and lots of windows to bring in natural light. Just outside the home is an outlying bath house that features a hot tub, sauna, bathroom and a large rollup door made up almost entirely of glass. Troy said the rollup door allows the couple to open the bathhouse up to cool breezes when the weather is suitable. Further down the driveway is a large airplane hanger where Troy keeps his three airplanes and a glider. On the 99 acres owned by the Ellis’ are two grass covered runways, one totaling 3,600 feet and the other being 1,800 feet in length. The property also features two ponds. The larger 1.5 acre pond is stocked with bass and bluegill for the fishing pleasure of the residents and visitors. Not only does the home feature two patios, both decorated with plants grown by Suzanne, who is a member of the Pearl River County Master Gardeners, but the home has a dedicated plant room as well. The Ellis home is a unique place for the couple to enjoy their retirement years, when Troy decides to retire. PICAYUNELIVING.COM 21 PICAYUNELIVING.COM 21

Custom Crafted Melody In a small woodshop in the back yard of a Picayune home, Ralph DeMatteo crafts custom electric guitars. “It’s peace of mind. I like to come out here and just relax and work on stuff. That’s my thing, I like to make things,” he said. A glossy green guitar hangs above the entrance to his workshop. A sunburst finish reveals the wood grain in the center of the guitar’s body. “It’s beautiful, but I set the neck too shallow, so I hung it up there,” said DeMatteo. “It reminds me: don’t make the same mistake again. No more faulty guitars.” After years of playing, DeMatteo wanted to find a new way to engage with music, so he began building electric guitars. “I always wanted to be a rock star or something like that when I was younger, but I was like, yeah that ain’t never gonna happen…I just love music. I’ve been raised on music.” DeMatteo remembers his mom playing ACDC while she cleaned house, and saving up all his birthday money to buy his first $60 guitar at age 10. “I didn’t care how expensive or how pretty it was, I just wanted to learn.” For years he’s been repairing his own guitars. He began hand wiring effect pedals, although they were too much work to be worth the time. Finally, he decided to try his hand at building a guitar. “I just went for it,” he said. DeMatteo is a self taught guitar maker, but his day job as a mechanic has made him skilled at working with his hands and 24 FALL 2020 24 FALL 2020

taught him how to adapt and create tools to accomplish the build in front of him. “I’ve helped build racecars, roll cages, stuff like that, so it’s kind of easy to fall into. You’re used to working with metal. Wood’s a little bit less forgiving than metal,” DeMatteo said with a laugh. His woodshop is humble; once a lawn mower storage shed that he converted by adding insulation and air conditioning to manage the humidity. The space is packed with tools such as a jigsaw, a radius sanding machine, a wall of wood planes and the hardest working tool in the shop—his ruler. The guitar making process starts with a design. He draws a full scale blueprint that can be used to make a template for the guitar body. Playability and cool factor are both important when designing a guitar. The guitar’s layout has to be accessible, so that nothing is in the way when the guitarist is ready to play. His designs so far have leaned to rounder shapes, but he’s planning to create an 80s style design with jagged points soon. “I like my shred guitars and my hair metal bands,” he said. He also works with customers to create designs that fit their desires, which can lead to some “off-the-wall” projects that mash different guitar styles together. With design in hand, DeMatteo creates templates out of MDF, which he uses to cut out the guitar’s body. “The wood market’s actually pretty treacherous, I’ve come to learn,” he said. Guitars are made with hardwoods, which can range from the

LOCAL ARTIST By C ATH Y COOK

more affordable like ash or maple to the more expensive such as rosewood or walnut. Some wood types are banned in different countries, so when DeMatteo ships anywhere out of the country he has to provide a list of the wood species used in the guitar. Once he has a body blank cut, it takes a lot of routing and sanding to refine those pieces of wood into a guitar body. DeMatteo also has to cut and carve the guitar’s neck, a much more precise process than shaping the body. Since he builds electric guitars, the shape of the body does not affect the guitar’s acoustics, but the neck must be perfectly straight for playability. “Frets have to be in an exact location. If not, then notes are going to be thrown off on the fret board when you’re trying to play.” Fortunately, DeMatteo loves carving necks by hand. “It’s real calming you know. You’ve got to pay attention, watch what you’re doing. You also are shaving wood off too, so you’re getting a little frustration out.” In his year of guitar building, he’s only ruined one neck, although he destroyed plenty of fret boards before finding a process to build them that works for him.

Still, scraps in his woodshop never go to waste. They might become part of a table, or a scrap wood guitar built from strips of scrap wood carefully puzzled together. With body and neck built, DeMatteo mixes his own stains to stain the wood or battles with the humidity to paint it. “It’s hard for me to cover a piece of wood with paint,” DeMatteo said, admiring the tiger stripes in a guitar body with a flame maple top. In a custom guitar build, DeMatteo defers to the customer when it comes to selecting pickups and a bridge, but he also builds custom pickups. Pickups are assembled using magnets, magnet wire and wax. He built a machine to help carefully wind the magnet wire, which is thinner than a human hair. From winding pickups to carving necks, DeMatteo keeps his hands busy. One of his latest projects is a small guitar for his 4-year-old son, the body of which is already built, wood sealed and waiting to be painted. Someday he hopes to get a bigger workspace where he can teach guitar building classes. In the meantime, he will keep selling custom electric guitars, pickups, necks and bodies on Facebook and Instagram under DeMatteo Guitars. PICAYUNELIVING.COM 25 PICAYUNELIVING.COM 25

It’s Always Sunny Here

Upon entering Costal Ridge Farm in Picayune, customers are greeted with a view of expansive fields of sunflowers alive with butterflies and bumble bees. Terri Doyle and her husband David have been local farmers for 40 years, but about three years ago, they started a unique business called Costal Ridge Farm Sunflower Field and U-Pick. Costal Ridge Farm allows customers to purchase tickets to come to the sunflower fields, take photos and pick their own sunflowers and wildflowers from the fields. Customers are encouraged to walk around the farm, relax, have a picnic and take all the photos they want. Doyle said people come from the coast, Hattiesburg and even Louisiana to visit the sunflower fields. The farm is a seasonal business with the flowers blooming through May and June and then again in September and October. Many people come to the farm primarily to take photos. “The photography aspect is big,” Doyle said. Professional photographers are able to book times to pho28 FALL 2020 28 FALL FALL2020 2020 28 28 FALL 2020

tograph their clients in the sunflower fields, and even amateur photographers can enjoy taking all the photos they want as they walk around and pick flowers. There are unique challenges that come with running a sunflower farm. The spring 2020 sunflower crop was badly damaged by tropical storm Cristobal. Doyle said they completely lost one third of the north field, and it is the first time they have had so much storm damage in several years. “The weather controls everything,” Doyle said. Another challenge of maintaining the fields is the animals. Doyle said wild animals such as hogs and deer often cause damage to the sunflower fields, and it is difficult to fence them out. A lot goes into maintaining a place like Costal Ridge Farm. In the winter, a cover crop is grown and then plowed under to improve soil quality for the coming season. The rain waters the flowers and Doyle said sunflowers are very drought resistant, so dry spells are not a big concern once the flowers are past the initial growth stages.

THE OUTDOORS By L aurel T hr ailk ill

“They’re thrifty with water,” Doyle said. Doyle said the flowers can grow a tap root as long as four or five feet. She said the large leaves of the plants catch morning dew. The dew runs down to the center of the stalk and wets the soil at the base of the plant. In this way the plants are able to survive long dry spells without rain or watering. Bees and butterflies seem to be as much a part of the Costal Ridge Farm sunflower fields as the flowers themselves. “We don’t spray to kill them,” Doyle said. Bees are crucial pollinators for farmers and gardeners, and with bees’ numbers dwindling, efforts toward protecting these pollinators are increasing. Doyle said she enjoys being able to run her own business and work from her home.

She said the farm is currently a manageable size and she plans to continue running the business for years to come adding new varieties of flowers along the way. Customers visiting the farm to pick flowers are encouraged to bring cutters for cutting the thick sunflower stems and a bucket to put their flowers in. In order to ensure that there are enough flowers for everyone and maintain social distancing, the farm is currently only selling tickets online and not at the gate to monitor how many people will be coming each day. Tickets are required for people 12 and older. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit coastalridgefarm.com. The farm is open twice a year; in the spring during the months of May and June and in the fall during the months of September and October.
