What you hold in your hands is a special edition of Picayune Living. In addition to including stories about attracting hummingbirds to your yard and some tips on adopting and caring for a pet, we are recognizing the winners of our inaugural Best of Pearl River County contest in this edition. Hummingbirds are unusual creatures in that they can fly in any direction and can hover. They need a lot of energy to accomplish those feats, so that is where nectar or sugar water becomes important for their survival. Inside you will find a story that details the lessons learned by a local hummingbird bander concerning bringing these amazing animals into your landscape. Pet ownership is a rewarding aspect of life. Whether you are a cat or dog person, or both, these four-legged family members can brighten a dark day, provide companionship when you are lonely and even be a source of laughter and entertainment. This is our first year to hold a Best of Pearl River County contest, and the response has been amazing. We received 90,000 votes through six different categories in the month that we ran the voting phase. Prior to the voting phase, Pearl River County residents made more than 3,500 nominations to select their favorite businesses, clubs, people and professionals to move on to the voting phase. It’s clear, here in Pearl River County we have a tight knit community that supports each other. We hope you enjoy this edition of Picayune Living and we look forward to holding next year’s Best of Pearl River County.

ATTRACTING AND CARING FOR HUMMINGBIRDS IN YOUR YARD PICAYUNELIVING.COM 5

A

Across the world, 230 various types of hummingbirds capture the imagination of people, but only one regularly visits homes in Mississippi, the ruby throated hummingbird. James Bell is a local hummingbird bander, which requires training, a license and a permit from the Department of Interior. Recently he shared his knowledge and admiration of these unique birds with the public at the Crosby Arboretum. He said that most hummingbirds live in South America, even those seen in Mississippi fly south to that country before winter. However, the ruby throated hummingbird does not fly farther south than Panama. For South Mississippi residents interested in hummingbirds and seeing them in their yards, there are several things they can do. The most sustainable way to attract them is through the use of plants that create nectar in red flowers combined with a commercially available feeder. Bell also recommends adding a bird bath or some other source of running water and to put the feeders near some sort of cover out of direct sunlight. Male ruby throated hummingbirds are very territorial and will protect a feeder once they deem it theirs. Males live solely to mate with as many females as possible in a season, Bell said. To allow many birds to feed at the same time, it’s a good idea to put out several feeders and spread them out in the yard.

6 WINTER 2021

Once birds have been attracted to a yard, there’s a good chance they will return annually since they always return to the area where they were hatched, Bell said. There’s an easy way to tell the males from the females apart, males have the tell tale ruby coloration on their throat, while females do not and are typically larger. Young males may appear to be female since they don’t develop the coloration until they are about 2-years-old. That coloration can appear black depending on the angle in which they are seen, since the sun’s reflection is what creates the tell tale red hue. Within the hummingbird physiology, two of the bird’s muscles are the largest, those for the wings and heart. Bell said a hummingbird’s wings can beat at 700 to 1,000 times per minute. As the birds prepare for their seasonal flight south, they pack on weight. During the summer, females typically weigh 3.2 grams while males weigh in at 2.9 grams. By the time they are ready to migrate, they can weigh as much as 5 to 6 grams. Those extra grams will be required to make the seven to nine day trip to their winter hunting grounds. During their trip, they are capable of flying 500 miles in two days. Contrary to popular belief, hummingbirds don’t just live on nectar. Their diet also consists of gnats, spiders and other insects as well as nectar and sugar water.

They feed on nectar by forcing their tongue into the flower or feeder and the liquid is taken in via pockets on the tongue, typically flicking their tongue 15 to 30 times a second while feeding. Breeding females will build their nests six to 25 feet from the ground and are usually so small people never see them. Nests are usually reused each season or rebuilt. Each female lays two eggs, usually spaced out two days apart. The hatchlings are feed by the mother for about 20 days, and can fly on their own by 21 days. At that point, they are self sufficient. Ruby throated hummingbirds can usually raise two broods a season. Bell said that there are a couple of myths about these unique creatures. First, like all birds, they do not stop caring for their young if a human happens to touch a nestling. «She is going to do everything she can to raise them,» Bell said. He also said that hummingbirds are not known to ride on the backs of geese, which is another myth. While commercially available nectar is available to fill feeders, Bell said a simple solution of one part sugar to four parts water is just as good, and red dye is not

required. In fact Bell said it’s best to just use the sugar water solution without dye. When making the solution, Bell strongly advises against using anything other than plain sugar. Artificial sweeteners and honey

are detrimental to hummingbirds. Also, Bell said it’s important to stick to the formula of one part sugar to four parts water, since too much sugar will prevent the hummingbird from being able to digest the solution. Feeders should be changed every 3 to 4 days in the summer, and during the winter every week or two at least. A mild bleach solution will help ensure bacteria growth is stymied. To keep ants out of the feeder, an ant moat can be added to the top of feeders that don’t come with one already. Filling the moat with water will prevent the ants from reaching the sugary water. No matter how attractive a yard is to a hummingbird, they will eventually migrate south. Bell said there is nothing that will stop their trip, which usually takes place at night. However, if a feeder is maintained in the winter, homeowners may encounter another species of hummingbird which typically summers in the west. Bell said his favorite type of feeder is made of glass.

ADOPTING AND CARING FOR CATS AND DOGS PICAYUNELIVING.COM 9

F

For first time pet owners, a local animal shelter can be the best resource for finding a new member of the family. Adopting a new pet from a local shelter is beneficial because the staff ensures the animal is healthy. Shelter pets are usually always cheaper compared to buying from a breeder. Pets offered from the local shelter are always already vaccinated and spayed or neutered. “People don’t think to check their local shelter because you never know what you’ll find. The shelter should be your first place to go when looking for a pet,” said Pearl River County SPCA Volunteer Sonja Heenders. What sets shelter animals apart from buying from a breeders is shelters always ensure the animal has received shots to prevent heartworms, flea prevention and canine parvovirus. Many shelters like the PRC SCPA even microchip the cats and dogs offered for adoption so they can be identified should they become lost. On average the cost to have a pet spayed or neutered and given all the necessary shots can range from $300 to $400 dollars if not adopted from a shelter. That cost is much less for shelter pets. For the most part, kittens can be adopted from the local shelter for about $100, which includes all first year shots and spaying or neutering. The price for dogs varies on the age, breed and other factors, but is still less than adopting from a breeder. At times, the local shelter will offer discounts on certain animals. New pet owners can be assured that their new family member came from a place where they were cared for

and given attention since there are many volunteers who make it their mission to help these animals find their «furever» home. Once you have brought the newest member of the family home, be sure to keep up with annual exams, check ups and vaccinations so the animal will remain as healthy as possible. Pets will need a little time and space to become acclimated to their new home and existing pets if there are any, so be patient and expect some accidents. After the initial adjustment phase, the family can be sure they will have a new loving companion. “Don’t push them too hard, let them come around on their own,” said SPCA spokesperson Maria Diamond. When the need to change a pet’s diet arises, it’s best accomplished gradually by mixing the old food with the new food in gradual increments. To help strengthen the relationship between pet and owner, it’s essential to put your dog or cat on a schedule. Schedules give them a sense of permanence and routine. Dogs depend on their humans to feed them regularly, play with them and take them outside to potty on a steady reliable schedule. Dogs have a tendency to get into trouble when they aren’t sufficiently occupied. Since dogs have a natural instinct to chew, a durable chew toy is a great tool to redirect destructive chewing of furniture and shoes. By making positive training a priority from day one, the new dog will grow into a well-behaved member of the family.

Since dogs are den animals that feel secure in a protected sheltered area, crates can be a good addition to the home. An appropriately sized crate will provide the dog with a safe haven and can ensure the dog’s safety when human supervision is unavailable. Playing with pets is a strong bonding experience so make playtime as interactive as possible. Not only will the animal receive lots of exercise, play can act as a foundation for training. After adopting a cat it’s important to give them lots of fresh water, especially from a pet fountain since running water entices cats to drink more. Milk is not advised since it can cause diarrhea. Cats need a good brand of dry cat food, or wet food once or twice a day. Since cats are obligate carnivores,

they require meat and as such prefer wet food over dry food. Also, cats in the wild get most of their hydration from eating raw meat, so wet food is better for their kidney health Cats litter boxes should be kept clean or they will develop bad habits so it’s important to scoop the box daily and change the litter weekly. When the cat is initially introduced to its new home home, it’s a good idea to keep it in a small room with the litter box until they use it. Cats that live indoors lead longer healthier lives, since outside cats are often hit by cars, killed by wildlife or come into contact with other animals that may carry diseases or parasites. While the new cat acclimates to its new home, it’s normal for them to hide under the bed or couch. To help relive some of that stress, try putting a box in the room where the family spends a lot of time. Having a place to hide can help a cat destress faster. Avoid forcing them from a hiding spot, because they will come out when they feel safe and secure. Cats will need a good scratching post made with sisal and or carpet. To train your cats to use it, catnip and or praise can be employed. Cats don’t need to be bathed, they groom constantly so they stay clean. But if fleas become a problem, avoid getting any shampoo in their eyes and be sure to keep them warm right after a flea bath. If someone is looking for a specific breed and it’s not available at their local shelter, smartphone apps such as PetFinder and Adopt a Pet can be used to search shelters in various states, where they can arrange to pick up or have that pet delivered by volunteers. The benefits of owning a pet are numerous, but one stands out above the rest.

“They really want to please you,” said Diamond “It helps you emotionally and gives you a purpose, they love you unconditionally,” said Heenders.
