HERITAGE HEROES

I have tasted many traditional South African foods at some point and most of them have become a fi rm favourite.

When you visit Durban, one of the most popular meal choices is the bunny chow. There are a variety of fi llings which are all tasty but my favourite is the lamb curry bunny. I have tried making it at home but it’s not the same!

Then there’s Cape Malay cuisine. Trips to Cape Town are incomplete if we don’t have the famous koesisters. We like buying them from a different store each time. We also enjoy the fl aky and buttery rotis with our curry.

Another simple yet versatile dish is chakalaka, mostly served as a side at braais. Then there’s vetkoek – delicious with a fi lling or on its own.

When it comes to dessert, there’s the mouth-watering malva pudding and milk tart, which has just the right combination – a lovely crust and creamy fi lling. I fi nd it diffi cult to eat just one slice... Local is lekker when it comes to food!

VEGAN VENTURE

Fresh Living magazine provides me with a fresh take on recipes. I enjoyed the Spring edition, especially with all the ideas for Braai Day. The recipes inspired me to celebrate my heritage in an amazing way – by hosting my friends and family and making the falafel patties and potato salad (I even put my own spin on the recipes!). I really appreciate it and always look forward to the magazine. – Wendy Mashiloane
