installed INstalled is a national programme that seeks to extend across the country the successful Stalled Spaces initiative being run by Glasgow City Council (GCC). The scheme sees local authorities acting as a brokers between communities and landowners to bring vacant and derelict land back into temporary use for the common good. We have been working with GCC and the Scottish Government to do further research into regenerating stalled sites, producing keynote events to celebrate the initiative and create an INstalled identity that gives a coherent language to the series of projects which will take place on different sites.

John Galt Affordable Housing, Irvine “The overarching vision for this North Ayrshire Council 80 unit, new supply of affordable housing development is to create: A finished development at this site that is both familiar and distinctive. The architecture will draw upon the finest precedents of urban design from North Ayrshire and the West of Scotland. Project distinction will arise from the level of care and attention taken in the design of buildings and public spaces. The project will be exemplary in terms of design quality and sustainable development at both a local and national level, as well as in terms of urban extensions and new neighbourhoods. Trudi Fitzsimmons Principal Officer, Strategy | Housing Services, North Ayrshire Council Pidgin Perfect and A+DS led a multidisciplinary planning workshop, involving key stakeholders to re-think the approach to developing the John Galt site. Using this information Pidgin Perfect created a visual brief which formed the criteria of a design competition won by Austin-Smith: Lord Architects.

A number of place making workshops have already been held with service providers to scope the potential for service integration into one site. A similar workshop was also held with community and parent representatives before two further wider community workshops. These wider community workshops were facilitated by Marc Cairns of Pidgin Perfect towards the end of June 2013 to provide the local community with an opportunity to participate in the process and to ensure that the strategic briefs for the proposed new facilities are relevant to the needs and aspirations of the local community of Tarbolton. Over the next year the designs for the campus project will be developed and it is anticipated that construction work will begin in the Autumn of 2014 with completion in early 2016.

Sandyhills Greenspace Pidgin Perfect were commissioned by Glasgow City Council (GCC) to deliver a short consultation programme as part of the Commonwealth Legacy Multifunctional Greenspace Project (MGP). Participation
bringing people together Consultation Creative Engagement Event
The Sandyhills Park MGP was conceived by GCC, as one of 19 Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games greener legacy projects. These project focus on environmental placemaking, seeking to deliver enhanced high quality openspaces. New sites will be important community assets and crucially provide other functions such as flood protection and wildlife habitat. The Pidgin Perfect consultations were delivered in East Glasgow during March and April 2013. Each event engaged local residents and park users on the design studies developed by EnviroCentre and erz. The focus of the Sandyhills Park MGP is water management, specifically the deculverting and comprehensive restoration of a 500m stretch of Tollcross Burn. This would be the first project of its kind in an urban area in Scotland. In addition, the restoration will include provision for a reinstated floodplain within the park which will be allowed to flood under certain rainfall conditions, contributing to flood risk management further down the catchment. This was considered to be a potentially contentious issue though early engagement with key local stakeholders, led by Glasgow City Council, suggests that there is support for such an approach.

Pidgin Perfect devised a workshop programme for the 2012 Pollokshaws Community Carnival to encourage intergenerational learning. The story telling workshops documented the lives of the older generation in Pollokshaws and created the basis for the development of an animation workshop to educate local school children about their local history in a fun and imaginative way. Through conversation with elderly community members from Trust Sheltered Housing Pidgin Perfect developed a script which followed the lives of two women, Agnes and Lena, living their lives in an ever changing Pollokshaws. The script was animated and filmed by pupils at St. Conval’s and Tinto Primary Schools using an animation toolkit designed by Pidgin Perfect. Each class was divided into ‘film units’ comprising of a Director, Production Assistant, Camera Operators and Voice Actors, who then worked with Pidgin Perfect to film scenes from the script. The stills and voice recordings taken by the children at both schools were edited by Pidgin Perfect to make the short animation, ‘I Belong To The Shaws’, which was shown at the Pollokshaws Community Carnival as well as screenings at both Primary Schools and Trust Sheltered Housing.

‘Monuments that Move Me’ is a creative heritage project run by Depot Arts in partnership with the Glasgow Open Museum. Between July 2011-September 2012 many young people across North Glasgow participated in a range of creative workshops to explore their local history, focusing on 9 monuments and heritage sites. Pidgin Perfect were invited to work with a group of teenagers from North Glasgow, participating through Springburn Regeneration Agency, to create a ‘Monuments that Move Me Map’ and set of representative models. Over three days, Pidgin Perfect took the group on a bus tour of the 9 heritage sites and provided the group with foundational knowledge of mapping and model making alongside a toolkit of parts to enable them to create their own large scale fabric map and experimental models. The final outcomes of the three day workshop will be showcased at the ‘Monuments that Move Me’ exhibition at Springburn Leisure Centre in September 2012.

SASA 2010 : Identity crisis workshop Participation
bringing people together Consultation Creative Engagement Event
Glasgow’s transformation from Industrial Powerhouse to Retail Capital maybe seen as an economic success yet it has come at a civic cost. The urban fabric of the city centre is nowtransformed along a pseudo continental model into a retail paradise that may ring with the sounds of café culture and al fresco dining; but it has meant the loss of areas important to the city’s collective memory. The cultural and economic shift consolidated by civic branding initiatives most significantly ‘Glasgow: Scotland with Style®’, has seen areas that no longer fit this reductive manufactured image such as Paddy’s Market (an historic 200 year old Flea Market) removed, resulting in the loss of real continuity, memory and sentiment within the city. Absurdly however there exists a fetishisation of heritage - that celebrates a rose tinted view of the past whilst the living history is erased. Whats more the reductive branding of the city betrays the true diversity of existing and emerging identities. These factors all culminate in a very real identity crisis. This premise formed the basis of the debate that took place at ‘Identity Crisis’ at The Barras Centre.

GAthering Wastelands. GoiNG Further than ruin porn Participation
bringing people together Consultation Creative Engagement Event
Over the course EASA012 Pidgin Perfect delved into the reasons, both universal and unique, for the Wastelands of Europe, going further than obsessing over the superficial beauty of dereliction and ruin porn. The participants went ‘further than ruin porn’, discussing why architects, planners and communities should avoid clichéd responses and get people to think differently about their wastelands. Pidgin Perfect worked with a select group of architecture students from across Europe examining wastelands, the effects they have on European cities and the impact of creative public engagement in the regeneration of wastelands. Following this, the participants experimented with creative engagement techniques, developing authentic responses to ‘stalled sites’ across the continent. Their activities involved mapping, dream collages and emotion masks as tools to generate an energy and excitement amongst the public for the future. Gathering Wastelands culminated in two exhibition days at the World Design Capital 2012 Pavilion. Here, Pidgin Perfect, the participants, and guest lecturer, Jude Barber of Collective Architecture, collaborated with Demos Helsinki to present our compiled research, ideas and experiences of wastelands back to a global audience.

Act One - a tour of the Biennale Giardini site for a group of local residents who discussed their opinions and ideas whilst viewing the pavilions. Act Two - Pidgin Perfect held a ‘theatrical’ open air dinner in the Castello neighbourhood where local residents, artists, architects, curators and activists ate , drank and talked architecture. SASA 2010 : pop up cinema at the barras Pop Up Cinéma Matinée was a unique and free cinema event for communities in the East End of Glasgow which took place in the courtyard of ‘The Barra’s Centre’ on Friday 20th August from 11.30am - 1pm. Participation
bringing people together Consultation Creative Engagement Event
The event was commissioned by RockDCM and aimed to create a discussion on the ‘collective urban identity’ of Glasgow and look at the current shape of regeneration taking place in the city through the showing of a series of original short films which deal with issues of identity, community and memory in Glasgow’s changing urban landscape. Pop Up Cinéma Matinée saw various artists from the city come together to show their work in a collective presentation and in an unexpected ‘pop up’ environment to new and old audiences. Providing an opportunity for artists within the city to meet, share, understand and appreciate their work with not only one another but the general everyday public and the city. Pop Up Cinéma Matinée was also intended as a celebration of ‘Paddy’s Market’, an historical flea market in Glasgow City Centre, which closed in the May of 2009. Short films which focused on Paddy’s Market were shown by local Glasgow artists Chris Leslie and Sijle Eirin Aure. Edinburgh based artist Lindsay Perth was also invited to screen some short films which dealt with high rise living within Glasgow.

The key aim of the project was to produce an interactive screening of ‘Girl Walk // All Day’, a 90 minute short film music video set in New York City. To do this, Pidgin Perfect worked with three dance organisations based in Glasgow. Working with Dance House to produce a flash mob like ‘Dance Walk’ which danced its way through the city from the Glasgow Film Theatre to the pop up cinema site gathering an public audience along the way and working with DanceHQ and 1 Blud Crew to choreograph an interactive dance routine to accompany the energy of Girl Walk // All Day and encourage audience participation. The dramatic transformation of the redundant and grey stalled space site into an inspiring and engaging performance theatre for one night only brought a new energy and audience to the site, changing the public perception of the purpose and potential uses of the site.

Pidgin Perfect were appointed by GHA and Glasgow City Council to engage and consult the local community of Pollokshaws and commissioned to support WAVE in the production for proposals for artworks for the Pollokshaws area. There were two sites of focus, the first was an area of slack space adjacent to The Vennel (Kirk Lane Cemetery) which will be transformed into a new distinct public realm with integrated artworks. The second was the The Shilling Ground, a site of significant historical importance in Pollokshaws, which will be reconditioned and brought back to life through consultation and collaborative design with the local community. Pidgin Perfect led on engagement and consultation with the local community and other key stakeholders to help draw out material from the community that would shape and inform future works. Pidgin Perfect spoke with the local community to learn more about the rich history, heritage and culture of Pollokshaws as well as developing and delivering a series of exciting workshops and events that included school workshops introducing stone carving and creative writing, investigative mapping exercises and community exhibitions.

the shilling ground Pidgin Perfect were asked by Glasgow Housing Association to develop an artistic response to The Shilling Ground, a public space in Pollokshaws, Glasgow. Originally used for ‘winnowing’ - sorting the wheat from the chaff - The Shilling Ground is a key location in the changing community of Pollokshaws as it reminds many residents of the historical context of their environment as it goes through a process of regeneration. Pidgin Perfect have, over the last eighteen months been developing relationships and an in depth understanding of the area through previous consultation projects, and felt that a public realm artwork on this site would have to respond to the built and remembered heritage context within Pollokshaws. The ‘Pollokshaws Compass’ highlights and connects the viewer to their surroundings providing information about local heritage landmarks, with further information in the existing Pollokshaws Heritage Trail. The design is currently under consulation in the wider community of Pollokshaws.

The PIPE FACTORY A Place for Learning and Making Our strategy for securing the future of The Pipe Factory and establishing it as a strong community asset in the East End of Glasgow that is open to all ages and groups is to be delivered in several phases. Phases 1 & 2 make the building safe and habitable and are imperative to increasing activity within the building. Phases 3 & 4 make the building functional and fun and are designed to provide a high impact but affordable aesthetic to suit the needs of the building users. The strategy includes several simple elements easy to construct from affordable timber by small teams of artists groups and volunteers, something The Pipe Factory can easily and quickly access. Other key spaces such as the Community Learning Space, Discovery Gallery and Museum of Pipe Making are essential additions programmed to service the local community and supply alternative learning facilities and opportunities for artists to learn and engage.

2nd Floor Commercial Venue Ann-Marie doesn’t have far to travel today. After dropping Jamie off downstairs she heads up to the second floor to meet her friend Sonia who has rented the space to hold a pop-up shop, showcasing her latest collection of fashions sourced from a variety of designers and all handmade in Scotland. Sonia heard about the space to rent from Ann-Marie - who is always telling everyone about the goings on at The Pipe Factory - and asked Ann-Marie to help her out for a couple of days, helping set up the shop while Jamie is at playgroup.

Ground Floor Community Learning Space
It’s 8.30am and young mum, Ann-Marie, walks her three and four year old boys to the ‘The Pipe Factory Playgroup’. She laughs to herself as her little Jamie runs over immediately, as he always does, to the large unusual brightly coloured play mat that covers the highly polished floor. In the midst of watching the girls getting breakfast ready and setting out games on the stage behind the big curtain, she catches a glimpse of a glass vitrine to her left, she’s reminded of many a Saturday afternoon when her Granny used to take her to The Barras. She smiles fondly as she waves goodbye to Jamie.

3rd Floor Multi-disciplinary Artist Studios Nick always arrives at noon, just as the morning playgroup is leaving for the day. As he stores his bike under the stairs he high-fives Jamie, his biggest fan, as Jamie leaves to head home with his mum. Nick runs up the colourful staircase, taking two at a time, and darts into his ever-messy studio. As he brings out his laptop he overhears the two girls who work in the back studio talking excitedly about their weekend plans and wonders what he’ll do with his.

4th Floor Communal Space & Project Spaces After a couple of hours spent working on a funding proposal for his next big project, and maybe a little bit too much time on Facebook, Nick heads upstairs to boil the kettle and get his lunch from the fridge. There is a new face boiling the kettle. A girl, someone he hasn’t met yet. Her name is Katie. Nick introduces himself and they chat for some time, forgetting all about the now boiled water. They agree to go together to the big opening at Aird’s Lane on Friday, before both heading back to work. Nick opens his laptop again, struggles to concentrate, and types Katie’s name into Facebook.

Gateway
: Merchant City Art Project Pidgin Perfect were shortlisted for the Merchant City Public Art Lighting Project from a highly competitive list of architects and public artists. Our proposal, on which we collaborated with our good friends Icecream Architecture, highlights Glasgow Cross as a ‘gateway’ between the Merchant City and the East End of Glasgow. The site on which the railway bridges traverse the Gallowgate and London Load at Glasgow Cross has been a gateway to the city since medieval times. Our Gateway celebrates that transition from East End/Merchant City and Merchant City/East End. Glasgow Cross has been an epicentre of Glasgow life since the sixteenth century, it marks the original heart of the city. In bygone times, it was a meeting point for trade, civic duty, municipal welcome, onward journey and social importance. It was centre stage in the hosting of major civic events and was regularly shrouded in colour and opulence to highlight its significance. Gateway proposes to attach large neon signs to the railway bridge to highlight the history, flavour and character of the area through the use of the Glaswegian colloquialism. Gateway echo’s the tongue in cheek signposting which is found in the area and signposts what is now a key gateway to the current Merchant City. Using the railway bridges that cross both London Road and Gallowgate the proposal will blur the boundary and celebrate the meeting of a diverse group of communities.

glasgow HARvest 2012 NVA’s Glasgow Harvest 2011 was a celebration of local food which happened at four sites - North, East, South and West - in Autumn 2011. The events were an irreverent homage to the village fête, with live music, communal cooking, food sharing and new works designed and created by artists for each event. Harvest is inspired by the people, food, community and places that make urban growing in Glasgow so unique. Pidgin Perfect worked with the growing community at Kennyhill Community Allotments and Garden in Riddrie, the hosts for Harvest East to create a permanent built artwork. Over July and August we held a series of conversations, workshops and creative engagements with the community working towards the installation of a Community Dining Table on site in time for Harvest East, September 2011. The Community Dining Table was unveiled at Harvest East and was incredibly well received by the plot holders, local community and arts community whom all attended the event. The permanence of the artwork creates a long lasting legacy from Harvest East and provides the community with a new place within the rich garden spaces of the allotments to come together and share not only locally grown food but also stories and inspirations from the past.

Pierrot Lunaire
: scenography
Pidgin Perfect was invited by Parisian-born conceptual artist Cyril Duval, working under the name Item Idem, to assist with the conceptual design development for the stage set of ‘Pierrot Lunaire’, a contemporary and provocative twist on opera directed by Bruce LaBruce. The project was the first ever staging of Arnold Schönberg’s melodrama Pierrot Lunaire, with Bruce LaBruce transforming the Schönberg opera into a one-hour-long gender-bending tale of impossible love, guilt, and confusion. Staged at Hebbel Am Ufer in Berlin the stage set reflected the typically neo-expressionist aesthetic of Item Idem and employed both Item Idem’s and Pidgin Perfect’s passion for blending art, fashion and design to create complex and communicative space. The central feature of the stage set was the large deconstructed projection screen which was key to adding further dimensions, motility and drama to the space. Pigeon Holes
: Merchant City Art Project Pidgin Perfect were shortlisted for the Merchant City Medieval Garden Art Fence Project from a highly competitive list of architects and public artists. Our proposal, on which we collaborated with our good friends Icecream Architecture, centred around a ‘living fence’ which promoted relationships and interactions . Medieval trade often consisted of people exchanging goods rather than paying money, to the extent that trust enabled people to leave items to be collected at a specified location without ever having to meet face to face. Pigeon Holes is an interactive addition to the planned Medieval Garden at George Street that enables people to interact with others in the city in a way inspired by medieval trade; becoming a self regulating swap shop, public notice board showcase for public art, as well as providing a comfortable vantage point on the garden. Pigeon Holes is intended to be a focal point for the community so there will be integrated seating within the lattice grid catering for the scale of children and adults making the ‘living wall’ suitable to all ages. In addition the overhang of the living wall will provide some shelter making the garden habitable even in the rain.

Project BluePrint creative engagement toolkit Pidgin Perfect worked with Ginko projects and AtWork to develop a toolkit that will be a public art model for schools and educational establishments across Angus. The toolkit will explore the methods and processes by which pupils, parents, teachers and community members can collaborate and work creatively with artists, architects, designers and planners to imagine and design new school environments, envisaging new buildings as well as the opportunities for physical improvements to existing spaces. The toolkit will support and encouragement creative practice and engagement between students, educators, and interdisciplinary design teams. This toolkit will be an exemplary working model created in partnership with research organisations to ground the project through good practice. Web interface to launch in the near future.

Installed
: graphic Identity and communication Strategy Pidgin Perfect are working with the Scottish Government and the designer Philip Blackie to create the INstalled identity which aims to give a coherent language to projects that will take place as part of the programme. Although these projects will exist independently, in both space and time, the repetition of this identity will unite them under the INstalled umbrella. In this respect the core identity utilises these changing components project, space and time. The nature of these sites make their location diffi cult to defi ne. It is suggested that location is appropriated to each site - be that an address grid reference or other. There is also an opportunity to implement a site identifi cation system, such as site numbers, specifi cally for Installed.

Development Hoarding Pattern
Installed ‘IN’ Logo
A pattern inspired by site hoardings has also been developed as a repetitive motif with the core identity overlaid to create distortion. Drawing on the aesthetic of installing vinyl onto a faceted surface; the identity adopts the form of the site hoardings. It is intended that this be replicated with vinyl onsite to adopt surface textures unique to each project space. Pidgin Pink has been appropriated into the identity to subtly tie the projects to the existing identity of Pidgin Perfect.
