POLLOKSHAWS GREENSPACE : THE VENNEL Pidgin Perfect were appointed by Glasgow Housing Association and Glasgow City Council to engage and consult the local community of Pollokshaws and commissioned to support WAVE in the production for proposals for artworks for the Pollokshaws area. There were two sites of focus, the first was an area of slack space adjacent to The Vennel (Kirk Lane Cemetery) which will be transformed into a new distinct public realm with integrated artworks. The second was the The Shilling Ground, a site of significant historical importance in Pollokshaws, which will be reconditioned and brought back to life through consultation and collaborative design with the local community. Pidgin Perfect led on engagement and consultation with the local community and other key stakeholders to help draw out material from the community that would shape and inform future works. Pidgin Perfect spoke with the local community to learn more about the rich history, heritage and culture of Pollokshaws as well as developing and delivering a series of exciting workshops and events that included school workshops introducing stone carving and creative writing, investigative mapping exercises and community exhibitions.

Pidgin Perfect devised a workshop programme for the 2012 Pollokshaws Community Carnival to encourage intergenerational learning. The story telling workshops documented the lives of the older generation in Pollokshaws and created the basis for the development of an animation workshop to educate local school children about their local history in a fun and imaginative way. Through conversation with elderly community members from Trust Sheltered Housing Pidgin Perfect developed a script which followed the lives of two women, Agnes and Lena, living their lives in an ever changing Pollokshaws. The script was animated and filmed by pupils at St. Conval’s and Tinto Primary Schools using an animation toolkit designed by Pidgin Perfect. Each class was divided into ‘film units’ comprising of a Director, Production Assistant, Camera Operators and Voice Actors, who then worked with Pidgin Perfect to film scenes from the script. The stills and voice recordings taken by the children at both schools were edited by Pidgin Perfect to make the short animation, ‘I Belong To The Shaws’, which was shown at the Pollokshaws Community Carnival as well as screenings at both Primary Schools and Trust Sheltered Housing.

THE SHILLING GROUND Pidgin Perfect were asked by Glasgow Housing Association to develop an artistic response to The Shilling Ground, a public space in Pollokshaws, Glasgow. Originally used for ‘winnowing’ - sorting the wheat from the chaff - The Shilling Ground is a key location in the changing community of Pollokshaws as it reminds many residents of the historical context of their environment as it goes through a process of regeneration. Pidgin Perfect have, over the last eighteen months been developing relationships and an in depth understanding of the area through previous consultation projects, and felt that a public realm artwork on this site would have to respond to the built and remembered heritage context within Pollokshaws. The ‘Pollokshaws Compass’ highlights and connects the viewer to their surroundings providing information about local heritage landmarks, with further information in the existing Pollokshaws Heritage Trail. The design is currently under consulation in the wider community of Pollokshaws.
