WHAT’S INSIDE

I am fortunate. I seldom experience sexism in the workplace and have never been forced to endure sexual harassment to keep my job. But I vividly remember my mother’s struggle to break the glass ceiling during the early 80’s, just a few years after the setting of 9 To 5. She was a data entry clerk at Sharon Steel, a small steel company in western Pennsylvania, with aspirations of becoming a computer programmer. When she first approached her boss about a promotion, she was told she needed a degree in programming even though several of the male programmers lacked degrees. So, my mom went to school at night and earned a degree in computer programming. Shortly after graduation, she approached her boss once again about a promotion. This time she was told she needed more management experience, even though the job she sought was entry-level. Refusing to give up, my mom became a team leader in the data entry department. Finally, on her third attempt at a promotion, it was granted, and my mom became the first female computer programmer at Sharon Steel in 1984. Every woman today stands on the shoulders of women like my mom who fought tooth and nail for equality in the workplace during the last decades of the twentieth century. As you watch the humorous struggles of Violet, Judy, and Doralee at Consolidated Incorporated, we hope you are inspired to stand up for the rights of women in all sectors.

“I raise up my voice – not so I can shout, but so those without a voice can be heard…we cannot succeed when half of us are held back.”
