Founded to Put Higher Education IN REACH

Piedmont broke ground, took root, and has thrived ever since — adding degree programs, a satellite campus in Athens, Georgia, and ever-expanding online options. Time has passed, so much has changed, yet Piedmont’s commitment to its founding charter is stronger than ever. Today, and always, Piedmont exists to put higher education — and the transformational difference it makes in its students’ lives — within reach. Including yours.

Piedmont University was founded in 1897 with a bold charter: bring high-quality private education to the students of rural Northeast Georgia. The forests were thick, the terrain was rocky, the future in such wilderness was anything but certain.

A CHALLENGING Academic Environment

When he enrolled at Piedmont University, Nic Johnson knew he wanted to study music, but he wasn’t sure what path his life would ultimately take. Today, he holds three Piedmont degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance and Musical Theatre, a Master of Arts in Teaching Music Education, and an Education Specialist. He works as a private voice teacher and music teacher. He performs as first tenor section leader with the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus and as lead singer of a successful band called the Social Engineers. His ability to build a successful life out of his passion has much to do with the education he received at Piedmont University.

“Piedmont has very high expectations. The faculty pushed me. They were hard on me, but in a good way.”

Today, as the regional vice president of a global investment firm, Burns strives to build relationships with her clients, to know the people behind the portfolios, and to help them make their financial dreams come true.

To accomplish her goal, she draws on her experiences at Piedmont University, where she thrived in small classes that allowed her to connect with her professors and classmates.

Mentoring Helps DREAMS COME TRUE

“At Piedmont, there was a real willingness to help and to be a mentor to the students that stuck with me immensely”

Daniela Cintron earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Piedmont University in 2009. She now works as the marketing director of an Atlanta-based law firm that provides legal help for underserved and underrepresented minorities. Cintron is also a freelance writer, who recently wrote a cover story, titled “Latinos — Interrupting the Narrative in Film,” for Oz Magazine, a publication focused on the film, television, print and new media industries in Georgia. In every aspect of her work, she promotes diversity and inclusion, and she does it with a strong sense of self that she developed at Piedmont.

“Piedmont helped me enhance the diverse person that I am. That was huge for me.”

MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS

After dropping out of high school to raise her son, Marchelle Massey Sandoval worked a variety of jobs before becoming a property manager in Cleveland, Ohio. In the early 2000s, she got married and relocated to Georgia, but without a high school diploma, she was unable to get a job. At age 50, she earned her GED from Athens Technical College, then she went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration from Piedmont University. She now works as a transition specialist and the interim director of adult education at Athens Technical College, where she helps adult students successfully transition into degree programs or the workforce. Thinking back to her time at Piedmont, one of the memories that stands out is Sunday afternoons spent reviewing class material with Walker College of Business Dean Dr. Kerry Waller: “I told him I could meet him after church, and he would make that work,” she said.
