Since its founding in 1897, Piedmont College has emerged as a comprehensive regional institution of 2,500 students, offering liberal arts and professional programs at the residential campus in Demorest, commuter campus in Athens, and at 40 off-campus locations across Georgia.

The Piedmont College School of Education graduates the second highest number of new teachers among all public and private colleges in Georgia and boasts the largest graduate program in teacher education among all Georgia colleges and universities. Piedmont is the only private college or university in Georgia offering a doctoral degree program in curriculum and instruction.


The Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) selected the Walker School of Business as one of seven schools out of 747 business programs worldwide to be profiled in a video promoting the importance and benefits of program accreditation.


The R.H. Daniel School of Nursing & Health Sciences provides the third highest number of BSN graduates among private colleges in Georgia. In the last five years, 98 percent of Piedmont nurses have passed the national licensure exam (NCLEX-RN) on the first attempt. Piedmont College also has a new MSN program and a new major in Athletic Training.


Piedmont College has NCAA Division III teams in men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, lacrosse, golf, tennis, soccer, men’s baseball and women’s softball and volleyball. More than 50 percent of PC athletes earned 2013 Academic All-Conference awards (USA South).


Opportunities abound to study abroad at Nottingham University (England), Paderborn University (Germany) and Japan, Peru, Ireland, France and more. Some 40 percent of Piedmont undergraduates discover the magic of international travel.


September 2013 marked the acquisition of the Lillian E. Smith Center in Rabun County, Georgia. The property includes the home and gravesite of acclaimed Georgia author and social justice activist Lillian Smith and 150 acres of pristine woodlands. In works such as Strange Fruit, Killers of the

Dream, and Now Is the Time, Smith strived to bring about change in the hearts and minds of her readers.


A broad range of traditional liberal arts majors in 33 areas awaits students in the School of Arts & Sciences. Almost one quarter of Demorest undergraduate students pursue degree programs in the fine arts – visual arts, music, and theatre – taking advantage of the Mason-Scharfenstein Museum, the Swanson Center for Performing Arts & Communications, and the new Smith-Williams Art Studios building.


Piedmont College is recognized as a distinctive institution, ranked among the top four Regional Universities in Georgia by US News & World Report (2013).

Forbes counts Piedmont College among the top six Private Colleges and Universities in Georgia for financial stability (2013).

Piedmont College President James F. Mellichamp, a noted musician, has spent the last 15 years in senior leadership positions at the institution. The president can be frequently seen talking with students on the Demorest Quad.
