A message from your As we close out 2018,
Director
PRD is excited to welcome more than 550 Junior Warriors to our recreational basketball program for Kindergarten through 8th grades as well as to launch a new Piedmont Middle School co-ed rugby team. As we move in to 2019, PRD will offer a wide range of Winter/Spring programs to our community. We continue to work closely with Piedmont Middle School to provide diverse after school enrichment opportunities, the Piedmont Community Pool is finding creative ways to meet increased demand for water polo across many age groups and we will continue to partner with PUSD and community groups to provide and support programs and initiatives around respect, inclusion and healthy relationships. Please be on the lookout for opportunities to engage in several recreation related master planning processes including the Piedmont Community Pool, Linda Beach Park, and Coaches Field. Our beloved Winter/Spring traditions will return again this year. Santa and his elves will host breakfast at the Community Hall on Saturday, December 8, the annual Bunny Blast will take place in the Main Park Saturday, April 6 and the Piedmont Community Pool will host an Egg Dive on Saturday, April 20.

5TH GRADE CO-ED
FOR PARENTS
Do you want to learn how to talk to your child about sex, intimacy, and sexual ethics? Do you want to open up the lines of communication with your child—and/or keep them open? In this three-part workshop, parents will better understand how and why their attitudes, beliefs, (and even their silences) can profoundly shape a child’s attitude and core beliefs about sex/ sexuality and relationships. Parents will have an opportunity to learn not only why it’s critical to have conversations about sex/sexuality early on, but also how to continue having them through high school. Parents will leave these sessions with helpful frameworks, language, and tools to give them the confidence they need to navigate the conversations that can actually help their child develop resilience and healthy relationships. Even if students aren’t sexually active, they’re in the process of developing ideas, attitudes, and beliefs about relationships, sexuality, gender, sex, and consent. Those ideas and attitudes can come from many places including parents, friends, school, and media. In these two signature classes, we’ll examine core influences on teen attitudes while emphasizing the importance of developing sexual ethics alongside resilience. The invaluable lessons in these classes can be applied to managing stress at school, anxiety about college, and navigating social situations with friends and intimate partners. In this three part class, students learn key concepts, strategies, and community norms that can help them create a healthy foundation for healthy friendships and relationships. PART I: Wonder Woman meets Spider Man: Gender Roles in the Media Landscape Students have an opportunity to discuss the kinds of messaging they’re getting about gender and power in the media landscape. Using film clips, action figures, dolls, ads, and other examples from pop culture as points of departure for discussion, students will learn how to think more critically about the “stories” they’re consuming about gender and relationships and how those “stories” can affect their ideas, attitudes, and beliefs. PART II: Bodily Autonomy and Consent What are key concepts needed to build healthy relationship with self and others? In this interactive class, students learn about consent, bodily autonomy, deal-makers & deal-breakers, and how to build resilience. Topics include peer pressure, asserting and respecting preferences and boundaries, and effective communication. PART III: What Do I Really Think? Students have an opportunity to examine their own beliefs around what healthy friendships and relationships look like. We’ll focus on developing “ethics” so that students can begin to think of friendships, social situations, and relationships as arenas where fairness, kindness, empathy, and justice really matter.
