Did You Know? Fun Facts About Snow & Snowflakes Snow crystals form in clouds when the temperature is underneath freezing point. They are created by water droplets freezing on small ice particles. As an ice crystal drops through the cloud it bumps and knocks others and becomes a snowflake. This process of bumping others, along with a little melting and re-freezing aids the creation of their complex design. The air that the snowflake drops through has to be under freezing otherwise the snowflake will simply melt and turn into rain. Amazingly, snowflakes always have six sides and similar to the human fingerprint, it is thought that no two snowflakes are ever exactly the same. Both the form and shape of a snowflake depends on the temperature and moisture content of the cloud. Snowflakes can be categorized into six main types, plate (flat), column, stars, dendrite (lacy), needle, and capped column. When it is extremely cold the snow is very fine and powdery and snowflakes become quite simple in design, usually needle or rod shaped. When the temperature is near to freezing point (0 degrees Celsius), snowflakes become much larger and a lot more complex in design, for example, a star. Snowflake Facts ***The world’s largest ever snowflake to date found was 38 centimetres wide and 20 centimetres thick. This snowflake occurred at Fort Keogh, Montana, USA on 28 January 1887. ***The worlds tallest ever snowman made measured a massive 34.63 metres and was made by the people of Bethel, Maine, USA. It took 2 weeks to build, finally being completed on 17 February 1999. The snowman, nicknamed Angus was so big that he had vehicle tyres for his mouth and trees for arms.

Be A Leader! True Power Comes From Within! TIGER PRIDE!
Bonner Middle
Westwood Middle
World-class atheletes and positive, motivating World-class speakers, The Power Team, paid Westwood Middle School a visit in November. While the athelets broke bats, crushed steel and even bent frying pans, they admitted that their physical strength paled in comparisson to their inner strength. Some AWESOME advice this TEAM shared with the students; that everyone can learn from, while speaking about lions in the wild, “Do Not Be Broken Like Circus Lions.” Even more so, the TEAM pointed out the importance of Being Yourself,
“Everyone has a finger print that makes them unique. BE A LEADER! NOT A FOLLOWER!”
Words Are Like Elevators... They Can Take You Up... Or Bring You Down. Students watched intently as the Power Team visited another Danville Public School this November. Their message to the students, “Start Strong, Stay Strong, and Finish Strong! Education Matters!”

EUANTES Wins Highest Award from Virginia High School League Once again, Euantes wins the highest award Virginia High School League gives a magazine. Euantes adviser, Sharon Leigg, announced the award yesterday. Here are some of the judge’s comments: “Your writing in this issue is some of the best I have ever read in my 50 years of judging. The pathos, the anger, the hurt, the pain your writers have captured in such poetic language chills my soul to the bone—Kudos!!!” “With each piece, I thought I had read the best, BUT it became more professional as I moved through the magazine.” “Visually, your magazine is complete pleasure. You have shown clear and exceptional creativity that provides powerful complements to the theme [Doors] and written word.” “An exceptional job, one of your very best. The joy of your publication is you have created one with classical traditions; it has built on itself. There is always outstanding art and photography, professional writing, classical design. The reader knows what to expect and has come to look for it. It has the classical tradition of a National Geographic, a New Yorker, or any commercial magazine—Kudos!!!”

The K4 classes at WCA preschool practiced giving and helping others during this Thanksgiving season! Mrs. Bryan came to each class to read a book and discuss ways to help out others. After, the classes created pictures and signed their names to cards to be passed out at the hospital to help others feel better this Holiday season! Helping others is fun!
Back in October, K3 and K4 had a blast at Owen’s Farm. It was a perfect day for the pumpkin patch.
Hip Hip Hooray! K4 celebrated the 50th day! K4 was full of excitement as they celebrated the 50th day of school! Students dressed up in 50's attire, had 50's inspired snacks, danced to 50's music and had fun games from the 50's!

A Snippet From The Headmaster’s Blog Generating Momentum . . .
November 11, 2014 Carlisle is truly on the move. In just the past few months, the school has rolled out a fresh strategic plan entitled Developing Learners, Graduating Leaders. In support of that plan, a group of teachers and administrators developed a strategy for enhancing teaching and learning through the use of technology, which was approved by the Board in September. Another group of teachers, students, parents, and trustees is now designing “The Portrait of a Carlisle Graduate,” a collection of traits and competencies that we want every Carlisle student to have upon graduation. This document will support the school’s mission and inform our program at every level. Additionally, since the beginning of this school year . . . • a group of teachers attended a conference that has inspired them to explore how Google Apps for Education might improve the classroom experience • a group of teachers began piloting the Surface Pro, and will make recommendations about which hardware is most appropriate for what grade level as Carlisle moves toward a one-toone program • student interest rose to such a high level that Carlisle decided to field a varsity swimming team that will practice at the YMCA • Carlisle decided to increase instrumental music offerings to include small-group string lessons at the PK and K levels • through partnerships with Virginia Tech and our local community lesders, Carlisle has started working to bring a much more robust internet connection to its campuses • development of new strategies and practices in finance and student recruitment have begun moving the institution closer to long-term sustainability • an early restricted gift to the capital campaign has provided funds for an irrigation system and fresh sod for the baseball infield . . . and more is in store. Stay tuned for further developments.

A Healthy December and Wonderful Christmas!
By Personal Fitness Trainer, Speaker, and Writer Dave Gluhareff
I love December and this month ends our great year with the awesome Christmas Holiday! This has to be one of the best Holidays to celebrate with all the lights, decorations, music, cheer, excitement and yes giving and receiving presents! As a Christian the meaning of Christmas for me is ultimately about Christ and what I believe he has done for me, and all of us, so I especially love the Christmas Eve service at West Main Baptist where I go to Church! I also enjoy all the commercial Christmas themes, music, gifts, setting up the tree, planning gifts for the ones I love, and all the get-togethers too. My sons are 4 and 9 so they absolutely love the kids Christmas movies, class parties, their school programs at Sacred Heart School, and exciting gift openings with their friends and family! Even though we have all these amazing Christmas times ahead, then New Years Eve, let’s not forget to take care of ourselves staying active and eating right. Kids and Parents so many times we all get caught-up in so much to do and so many people to see for the Holidays and travel that we forget to take care of our own health. We should all aim to still exercise regularly each week and make sure our food selections are healthy with low fat, low sugar, and low junk choices. We don’t have to be too careful about making a few bad food choices at a Christmas party if we are good all week anyways. Be good as much as you can exercising and eating healthy foods so when you know there are a few Holiday parties or family get-togethers you can just relax and enjoy a few junky foods in moderation. Parents read me loud and clear… We Parents Set The Examples for Our Kids to Follow. Please do not just tell your kids to get be active and eat healthy…NO you Parents, like Me, have to lead your kids by example. We have to be healthy role models and take our kids outdoors to play ball, take a family hike, go to a fitness center, not buy junk foods, prepare healthy meals, enjoy healthy snacks together, and most importantly get plenty of sleep. We parents have to lead. Kids and Parents enjoy an awesome December TOGETHER being active, eating healthy, and getting plenty of rest. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s Eve together and most importantly please kids, parents, grandparents and all people tell your family You Love them and Appreciate them!
Just Be You!

Holidays are a special time where we celebrate with family and friends. Cozy fires, family games and family meals, presents, jingle bells, wreaths, twinkling lights and school closing. These are some things that come to mind when I think about Christmas and Winter break. What do you think of? Every family is as original as a snowflake in their traditions and how they celebrate. But we can all join together in the same way in caring for our neighbors. Share part of your holiday meal or deliver some home baked cookies to someone who lives alone. It doesn’t take any money to offer to rake leaves for someone who cannot get outside. However you celebrate the holidays, use the time away from school to recharge. Hang out with your favorite people. Enjoy practices and games with no homework! Think about where you may want to improve going into the New Year and celebrate your accomplishments from 2014. Remember, just like every family is original, you are original too. You are different from everyone else, and that is a good thing. Celebrate! Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Corner Snail and his Goldfish
My afternoon was going like most of them do. I came home from work, we did the “get three children to eat dinner” struggle, followed by the “get three children clean” event. I was sitting down, unwinding with the kids while they had their bedtime snack when something happened that made me the proudest mom in the world. (Is “proudest” a word? Don’t ask me.) My “youngest” twin, Mitchell, who is widely known for being a man’s man, eating everything in sight and not showing too much emotion-touched my heart in such a big way. You see, Mitchell had a snail shell that he loved to pal around with. This particular shell was no longer home to an actual snail, still he was dubbed “Snail” and instantly became Mitchell’s sidekick. Snail was back from one of his random adventures of being played with and tossed under the entertainment center (because, well that’s what three year olds do) and was sitting on the couch with us while Mitchell ate his snack. I am SO thankful that I turned my head when I did, because had I not I would not have seen my little stern man offer Snail one of his goldfish. When Snail didn’t react and eat the goldfish after a few seconds of holding it thereit didn’t discourage Mitchell. He simply sat it down beside Snail and continued to eat his own portion. I’m glad he didn’t see me witness this-he surely would have been embarrassed. In the “everyday-ness” of life, working so hard to raise these little people, we wonder and worry so much. Are we showing them enough compassion? Are we teaching them to love themselves, as well as everyone else? Are they learning good things by watching us? Little moments like this, with Mitchell’s snail and his goldfish, confirm that maybe, just maybe, we’re doing something right. I pray that he will always “share his goldfish” with others, and not for the show of it, just to be helpful. Don’t forget to “share your goldfish” with others-this holiday season and always. Merry Christmas from our home to yours!
