YUMMY!!! Stay Active Healthy Cold Stay A ctiv ct ive e & Ea Eatt He Heal alth thyy in a C old ol d February! From Fitness Professional and Health Writer Dave Gluhareff:

History and Hearts From Fitness Professional and Health Writer Suzanne Stowe: February is a busy month for remembering important people in our lives and significant events. It is also known as the month of love. We celebrate the birthdays of two important former United States Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We also remember African Americans who made significant contributions to the history and advancement of our country. We also place a special focus on February 14th as a day to celebrate the love we feel for someone close. When I was in elementary school I enjoyed picking out just the right Valentine for each of my classmates and I would even deliver cards to my neighbors. I did not want anyone to be left out. Take advantage of the opportunity this month to enjoy showing someone that you care. And when the month is over, keep it going. It is always a good time of the year to show some love to those around us.

Kids and parents February is a cold month for sure but we can still stay active and eat healthy! February usually has some cold temperatures combined with cold winds, which makes getting outdoors a bit tougher. Yet we all can bundle up in layers to brave the colder temps and still enjoy being outdoors. Being indoors too much leads us to get lazy and sit around watching TV and playing video games. Once we make the decision and get outdoors and enjoy fresh air and sunshine we instantly get more energy and feel better! Getting outside lifts our moods and makes us more positive too! In Danville and Pittsylvania County we all have many public parks, school tracks, tennis courts, and city/county trails to walk, play and bike on. I love taking my boys to the various parks and tracks to walk, play soccer, shoot basketball, throw football, and play tennis. We also love going to Anglers Park/Anglers Ridge mountain bike trails where we hike, run, bike, and the boys love to explore the woods and creeks…sometimes rolling their pant legs up, taking their shoes and socks off, walking and wading through the little creeks playing and laughing. We can also choose indoor options such as the YMCA, Perfect Body Fitness Center, and city Rec Centers to play sports in their gymnasiums. My clients, sons, and I train indoors at my facility with resistance training equipment and as much as weather per pe permits we also go outdoors to mix up our workouts and enjoy the fre fresh es air. With Cold and Flu season near its peak it’s also a good iidea id e to not stay indoors so much but be outdoors (dressed warm) b building ui our immune systems. Fresh air, sunlight, exercise, and h av having fun will help us all to stay healthy and strong! Eat Healthy! We always have to make sure we still choose h ea healthy foods like lean proteins (chicken, turkey, fish, pork, beans, n ut etc), vegetables, complex carbohydrates (oatmeal, brown nuts, rice rice, whole grain breads, sweet potatoes, etc), fruits, low fat dairy, a nd drink plenty of water (*Avoid any foods you are allergic to). and Have fun this February staying active, eating healthy, and g et getting plenty of rest!

Parent

Corner Sanity ReSTORED My husband and I did something unheard of by parents a few M w weeks ago, in fact-I might get a few nasty remarks from you re e readers. Are you ready? Are you sitting down? Ok, here goesw we went to the grocery store-ALONE!! O Our usual grocery store trip goes something like this: We get alll the kids in the car, along with favorite toys, must-haves, al sn n snacks, and drinks for the ride. After I corral all of them, who byy the time I've gotten my shoes on have managed to strategi i gically hide in the back of the van, I get them safely buckled into in n their seats. I run back in the house to get ______(fill in the th h blank with something ridiculous that shouldn't be need, but is, is desperately.) I use the bathroom, because I know I won't ge e to go again til we get back home. I get out to the car just get n time to hear the argument over what DVD we will watch on in the th h way. (Yes, first world problems, I know) Finally, we are on our ou u way. Once we make it to town, everyone has decided they don't do o like the snacks or drinks I chose, and need a happy meal in n instead. *Sigh* I give in and buy the happy meals, for the sake off a peaceful shopping trip. It never works, but the hope is all always there. After distributing the food, toys, and drinks from the th h happy meal throughout the "starving" children in the car, w are on our way....again. Upon arrival at the grocery storewe all of my children immediately forget how to act in public, but all I ssomehow trick the twins into "driving" the double car cart for me, m and Katie into walking along side them. The rest is really a bll I wish I could describe it for you-but I am pretty sure that blur. Ib black out during this time. It ends with us spending too much m money on ridiculous things that we don't even need-and the children eating all the fruit snacks on the way home. ch h T THIS grocery trip in particular-when we were able to go al alone-went like this: We were on our way to the grocery storepr p prepared for the normal trip, when Grandma called JUST as w passed her driveway and offered to keep the kids while we we w go. We did a screeching U turn in the middle of a county r road-placed them inside her door and ran before someo changed their mind. Along the way, we spoke when we one w wanted to and were quiet when we wanted to be. We listened t talk radio, not Franklin or the Ninja Turtles. We stopped at to a awesome thrift store we've always wanted to take a peek an in inside-and peacefully shopped for an hour until we decided w were ready to go on to the grocery store. We walked inside we t grocery store-when I realized I had to use the restroom. I the W WAS ABLE TO USE THE RESTROOM! (How funny is it going t look when people scan this article and see only that in all to c caps) Anyway, we shopped peacefully, stayed under budget, a got take out from the restaurants we wanted on the way and h home. The end. * *Disclaimer* I am SO thankful to have healthy children who c go to the store with us every week. I am also thankful for can G Grandmas who know that we love a relaxing trip every now a then. Happy parenting, y'all! and
