Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual tradition in which people of Hispanic descent celebrate their culture and the many things that make their culture unique . Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. September 15 marks the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico declared independence on September 16 and Chile on September 18. Therefore, this time of the year is particularly momentous for Hispanics. The month-long celebration of Hispanic culture is an attempt to recognize the cultures and history of American citizens with Hispanic ancestry. In 1968, with Lyndon Johnson as President, Congress passed a resolution to observe Hispanic heritage for a week-long event . It wasn't until President Ronald Reagan, in 1988, expanded the week-long commemoration to a month-long celebration that National Hispanic Heritage Month became law. Hispanic Heritage Month honors the impact Hispanic culture has had on various parts of American society, including the arts, business, politics, and science. The Hispanic population continues to grow in the United States, and this segment of the population has made and continues to make many notable contributions. As of 2010 Census results, there were more than 50 million Hispanics living in the United States, which is up from just more than 35 million reported by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2000. Hispanics have remained the fastest-growing minority population in the country, and their numbers, and contributions, figure to continue growing.

Westwood School Technology Inventions Students in Ms. Brown's 8th grade technology classes had to think of a new technology they would like to see invented in the next ten years and present their thoughts to the class. They had to discuss what the technology was, what were the features and attributes, and how they planned to sell it and market it within the business world. Some ideas were wonderful and some were "out there" but all had fun learning about technology and the business process! Music at Westwood The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade chorus at Westwood are beginning rehearsals for the upcoming musical, Music Man Jr. which will be performed in late October.

Students at Forest Hills are back in the routine and working hard in the school computer lab. Students have lab classes in Rosetta Stone Spanish and in taking Accelerated Reader Reading practice quizzes. Forest Hills is off to a great start! The Gibson Bulldogs are off to a great start! Students are excited and ready to explore the learning opportunities that each day can bring. This year on the outside of the school students and parents will find the “Bulldog Bookhouse”. This mailbox will contain school information about upcoming events and free books for students at Gibson. The Gibson Bulldogs are looking forward to a great year!

Fun at Northside Preschool

Welcome back to school from all of us at Classcandy! We hope you all have a great year!

Woodberry Hills is on the Road to Awesome! The 2013-2014 school year was off to an amazing start as new students were welcomed during open house on Thursday, August, 8th. Excitement and anticipation filled the air as students arrived to meet their new teachers, many eagerly bringing their new school supplies to their classrooms. This provided an opportunity for students to get to know their teacher and to tour the building. Woodberry teachers were very pleased with the turnout, as well as the opportunity to meet their new students and their families. Lot’s of exciting things are happening in the classrooms! First grade read the book First Day Jitters by Julie Danneburg. They discussed how they felt on the first day of school. They also made “jitter juice” by following a recipe with lemon-lime soda, green sherbet, and raspberry flavoring to calm their first day jitters. (picture attached) Third grade has been working very hard on mastering their SOLs. In social studies, they came up with our classroom rules to help learn SOL 3.10. In math, they used pattern blocks. Students were able to create repeating and growing patterns with different attributes. While in science, students classified pictures of animals in sets and subsets, based on common characteristics to help learn SOL 3.1 Fifth grade is hard at work and has settled in to their new year. They are currently working with rounding and comparing decimals, classification keys, synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and multiple meanings. They also trying to get a jump start with preparing for the writing SOL test which will be in March. They are looking forward to a great year! Page 2 • Classcandy© •September 2013

John M. Langston Focus School’s Science Department Dr. Adams’ earth science classes enjoyed learning safety procedures and measuring practices in the lab during the first weeks of a very successful year thus far. The safe transfer of liquids with precision while accurately reading the volume from graduated cylinders were the main objectives of the students pictured here. Both Dr. Adams and the principal of John M. Langston Focus School, Ms. Jocelyn Fitzgerald, are extremely proud of the students’ activities thus far and excited about their future accomplishments. www.classcandy.com

Schoolfield Elementary is now participating in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) primary goals are to create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices, to expand the variety of fruits and vegetables children experience, to increase fruit and vegetable consumptions, and to make a difference in children’s diet to impact their present and future health. This program is an important component in combating childhood obesity. FFVP snack will be provided at least three times per week. We will serve on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Schoolfield Elementary had one of their most successful open houses on August 1st and 2nd. Students and parents came to meet the teachers and survey their new classrooms. Smiles were as shiny as the new floors that were installed this summer in many of the classrooms.

George Washington Good News The GW Concert Choir under the direction of Lee Anne Sheridan is off to a great start. They went to Choir Camp on Saturday, August 24 from 9-4:30, where students spent the morning reviewing the basics of reading music notation and singing and the afternoon working on repertoire. The Choir Booster Club provided a delicious lunch. On Saturday, August 10, the Concert Choir hosted a Carwash/Bake Sale at Auto Zone on Riverside Drive from 9-1 as their first fundraiser of the year. There was another Carwash/Bake Sale Saturday, August 31, from 9-1 at Auto Zone again. On September 7, a select group from the choir will attend Choir Leadership Training at Lynchburg College under the direction of Dr. Jong Kim all day with a concert at 5:00. One of the after school choirs, Outreach Choir, under the direction of former GW graduate LaTish Wyatt, began rehearsals this past week on Friday. They rehearse weekly in preparation for opportunities to perform in the community. Their first engagement is September 15 at 3:00 in Java, VA. On August 28, 2013, Dads of Langston Focus School students were invited to the campus to share doughnuts with their young adults. The event allowed time for the administrative staff to interact and communicate with students as well as Dads of Langston; all while enjoying tasty treats. www.classcandy.com

Pittsylvania County Educators awarded education grants by the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce.

Jazmin Catron, Noah Catron, Emily Hutcherson, and Abagail Williams had a Pink Lemonade stand at Mt. Airy to raise money for Claire Parker who has been diagnosed with cancer. They raised $175!

CHAMBER AWARDS OVER $114,000 IN EDUCATION GRANTS Teachers Recognized for Creative, Innovative Initiatives Recognizing that education is a cornerstone to the economic success and vitality of the Dan River region, the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce awarded over $114,000 in teacher creativity grants today to Pre-K through 12th grade educators in Danville, Pittsylvania County, and Caswell County (NC).

Australian woman, 64, completes swim challenge on 5th try A 64-year-old Australian woman has become the first ever person to swim the shark-infested waters between Cuba and America without a cage.

Diana Nyad took 53 hours to swim 110 miles between Cuba and Florida. She wore a special protective suit to stop jellyfish from stinging her. It was her fifth attempt at the challenge, having been stopped by issues like jellyfish stings in the past. “This is a lifelong dream of mine,” the Australian explained a few miles before the finish line. She is now thought to be relaxing in Florida after completing her huge task. A support team of 35 people helped Nyad through the grueling marathon. They followed alongside her in boats.

Be Healthy & Positive going Back to School!! From Trainer Dave I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! My boys and I always play and stay active all year round and this summer we did things like swimming, biking, trail hiking, running, working out at my personal training & Virginia Bootcamp facilities, tennis, walking our neighborhood, baseball, football, Frisbee, and so much more! My sons also really loved adding two more Obstacle Races to our fun times! Both Dylan (8yrs) and Matthew (3yrs) each raced in the Super Hero Scramble obstacle race in South Carolina plus the Spartan Kids race on Wintergreen Mountain here in Virginia with my VPX Team Xtreme and their Cousin (my Nephew) Jordan Hunter Gluhareff (8yrs)! So proud of my boys and them training, staying active, and having fun all the time! Regular exercise, proper nutrition, and getting plenty of sleep and rest are so important! Did you stay active all summer? Did you have fun? Now just because school is back in doesn’t mean you have to stop playing and having fun! After each school day plus every weekend, of course when your homework is complete, you should always make time to go play outside! Staying active is a year round fun goal! You can have fun with friends and family playing games and sports or you can sign-up for an organized sport and play for a team! Make sure you play, laugh, have fun, eat healthy, get enough sleep at night and stay positive in and out of school! Opening Exercises Kick Off 2013-14 School Year

Carlisle welcomed students back to campus recently with the annual Opening Exercises, which recognizes the first grade class of 2025 and senior class of 2014 in particular. The chatter of excited voices catching up with friends was quickly silenced by the familiar sound of bagpipes and drums, as first graders and seniors proceeded into the auditorium and were seated on the stage during this morning's Opening Exercises. Wes Smith, upper division SCA president, welcomed students and faculty back to Carlisle. "I believe this year will be crucial to our school," he said, mentioning the many changes that have already begun to characterize the year. "I'm excited about the possibilities for this school year." He encouraged students to take advantage of the many activities the SCA puts on throughout the year, from homecoming week to the spring cookout, adding that they were a good opportunity to get to know new students and spend time with each other. This year's theme - The Year of Innovation - was chosen on Monday by members of the Middle and Upper Division SCA, and ties into the faculty's summer reading of a book called Teach Like a Pirate. "I would challenge you all to learn like pirates," Head of School Tommy Hudgins told the students, alluding to the book. "Take risks, don't let anything get in your way, search for buried treasure, and be active in the classroom. Think about going that extra step this year." Hudgins also echoed Smith's sentiments. "We all are very excited. We have a good journey ahead."

The Parent Corner Making Smart Decisions About Video Games (NAPSI)—If it sometimes seems that every young person you see has a video game in hand, it may be because they do. According to recent research by The NPD Group, 91 percent of kids—more than 60 million across the country—play video games. There’s a great deal of debate over the content and nature of many games on the market and about whether video gameplay has a negative effect on attitudes and behaviors. As technology continues to evolve, however, and parents demand better options, the popularity of online and mobile games presents a valuable opportunity to provide developing minds with interactive, stimulating options—with the added benefit of improving classroom skills. While parents can turn to ratings for information about language, violence and suggestive themes, determining the games that provide teachable moments for their children can be more of a challenge. They engage visual learners through the visual presentation of ideas, auditory learners through voice-overs and music, and kinesthetic learners through interactive exercises and engagement in the story.
