March 2015 Get Fit With Dave Column special to ClassCandy by Dave Gluhareff Healthy & Positive Family Time Outdoors! As the weather begins to warm a little it’s the perfect time to begin getting back outdoors. Winter is on its way out and we will all soon be into Spring with Mother Nature blooming, budding, and flowering. This time of transition will be gorgeous here in Southside Virginia! Kids ask your Parents to join you for outdoor activities and Parents if your Kids do not ask you then You ask them outside. If not Parents then ask other family members like Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, Cousins, Brothers, Sisters, etc. We should all spend as much quality family time together as possible anyways but especially now as the outdoors is coming alive we should all be outdoors enjoying with people we love. My boys and I are outdoors most of the year anyways but this past Winter has had some really cold temperatures along with snow and ice so it has kept us indoors a bit more than usual. Now as the weather has been warming we have already started getting outside for more healthy Father and Sons activities. Here are some Positive outdoor Healthy Family activities all of us can enjoy: - Have a Cookout outside your home or at one of our local parks grilling healthy health lthyy lean meats, meats, s, with wi whole who hole le grain gra rain in breads, s, potatoes, potat tatoe oes,, fresh fre resh sh veggies, veg eggi gies,, fruits, frrui uits ts,, low calorie e drinks dr and juices juiice cess or water, and and healthy h althy chips! he chip ips! s!
- Take a hike down at the mountain bike trails at Anglers Ridge out near the airport where about 35 miles of trails are completed compl p eted already! - Mountain Bike or Run the Anglers Ridge mountain bike trails! - Walk, Jog, or Road Bike the River Walk Trail System along the Dan River from the Danville Airport to the Rugby Fields to the Community Market Downtown to the heart of the city near the 29/58 on & off ramps! - Run, Walk, or Hike around Ballou Park where there are great trails throughout the park and beautiful rolling hills! - Enjoy Playgrounds at Ballou Park, Grove Park, and other parks around the city! - There’s a great Frisbee Golf course in Ballou Park too that’s terrific for toddlers and up! - Go Fishin! Check with the Danville Parks & Recreation office for rules about fishing along the Dan River within designated areas! Make sure safety first and wear life jackets anytime near water and always have an adult (who can swim) standing beside you! - Picnic along the River Walk Trail System in some of the fields or near the benches or picnic tables there or in the parks throughout the city! - My boys have loved going down to the Skate Park beside Dan Daniels Park (Danville Brave’s Stadium) to practice on their skateboard! - Play Basketball, Soccer, Softball, Baseball, Ultimate Frisbee, Tennis, Football, and many other sports at any of the public parks and fields like Bonner, GW, Ballou, Grover Park, Langston, and more! If you live on a farm, have some land, or even have enough yard outside you obviously do not have to go anywhere to get outside and play. Our goal as families should be to get outdoors and enjoy fresh air and sunshine with the ones we love! Families get outdoors together enjoying healthy activities and have plenty of laughs, better communication, hugs, and smiles! Get outdoors, be Thankful, and enjoy LIFE!

Family Fun Activity! Once all the snow has melted and the flowers and grass starts to grow, start a hunt for a Lucky Shamrock! A Lucky Shamrock is a clover, but instead of 3 leaves, they have 4! It’s said that if you find one before or on St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll have good luck!! So, if you find one, share the news of your Good Luck by taking a picture of yourself with your Lucky Shamrock along with your name, teacher’s name, school and grade and email to info@classcandy.com!
Tired Of The Snow? You know, sometimes as a parent, it gets hard to see the good. Especially with 8,244 snow days under our belt, while many of us were facing the dreaded stomach virus along with it. Snow and tummy troubles? NOT a fun mixture. The good news? (If I’m wrong, you can say I jinxed us) I think we’re through the worst of the weather. Granted, as I type this, I’m looking at a forecast that tells me that I can wear capris on Wednesday, and then break out my snow boots again on Thursday. But, I have to believe that we’ve seen all the snow we will see. If I’m wrong, and we see more snow, I think we’ll make it through. I think we will get the phone call canceling schools, and refrain from slinging the phone out of the window. I think we will mop up floors wet from the snow, mud and slush, and NOT want to burn the house down. I think we will put little hands in gloves, little feet in snow boots, and little hats on heads and send them out with a smile on our face-because of the smile on theirs. We will arrange sitters, find the best sledding hills, and make snow cream. We’ll do all this, because one day they will be our age, dressing their little ones for snow, and we’ll want them to have fond memories of when we did it for them. And, if for some reason you can’t make yourself happy about the snow day-grab a BIG cup, fill it with coffee, make the snow cream, and eat it by yourself while hiding in the bathroom.
